(33 crore ?? Gods !)

When it comes to God and worship the first thought comes to our minds is about the 33 crore Gods (Hinduism). Exactly which God to worship? But we hardly try to seek an answer for the existence of 33 crore Gods. And if yes, who are they? What is the purpose of this theory? Well, in this article I am trying to unfold some concepts behind the theory of 33 crore Gods.

God known as Dev in Sanskrit, derives from the root da which means to give. The one who is so prosperous that he is only a giver and never asks for anything is Dev. This is such a simple concept. Although there are some other definitions of it. But the perversion of this simple derivation and due to some differences of opinions after the Vedic era, a separate God was created for every energy. Nonetheless every God is meaningful. Even the names of the Gods are created so thoughtfully that chanting the names gives benefit. E.g. The name Ganapati has 'Gam' beej (seed), which gives wisdom, power to remove obstacles. Thus chanting this name gives us wisdom and power. Lets keep aside the energies of beejas and consider a simple deity name Vitthala. This name has 'Tham' beej which is Chandika Goddess's beej. Also chanting the alphabet 'tha' again and again gives a good exercise to lungs and heart due to the emphatic exhalation during pronunciation. So when someone claims that the chanting of Vitthala can improve your health, it has some scientific basis too. Every God's or deity's name is based on a secret but scientific concept. This whole system is so simple and thoughtfully created but sadly we neither apply our logic nor implement it properly due to ostentations and superstitions.

Well, now from where these 33 crore Gods came to existence? Basically this confusion has been created due to the word crore i.e. 'koti' in Sanskrit. Koti is a word also used to denote a number which is 10 million and its same meaning is always applied here which has created this baffle. Koti / Kotee in Sanskrit has lots of meanings like 10 million, supreme, curved end of bow or claws etc. I didn't find any difference in the meaning due to the representation of the vowel ee or i with the alphabet t. In my opinion 33 koti Gods means 33 supreme powers. In later years due to the misinterpretation of the word koti it as simply translated to 33 crore Gods. Still to know exactly who are these 33 Gods lets understand one conversation from Brihadaranyak Upanishad. Sakalya asked Sage Yadnyavalkya about the number of Gods and he replied as 303 and later 3003. Again Sakalya asked the same question. This time Yadnyavalkya answered "There are 33 Gods". Still unsatisfied with the answer, Sakalya repeated the question then Yadnyavalkya answered "There are 6 Gods". Now again Sakalya asked the same question and told Yadnyavalkya to answer thoughtfully. This time Yadnyavalkya answered "There are 3 Gods". Again Sakalya asked him about it. Yadnyavalkya replied "There are 2 Gods". Again on the same question Yadnyavalkya replied "there are one and a half Gods". Now Sakalya was infuriated and asked "Is this even an answer? How many Gods are there?" Yadnyavalkya replied "There is only one God". Then Sakalya asked "Then what were the other Gods whose numbers you mentioned?" On this Yadnyavalkya replied that the 3003 Gods are the manifestations, glories, radiances of the 33 Gods. Those principle Gods are 8 Vasus, 11 Rudras, 12 Adityas, Indra and Prajapati ("अष्टौ वसव एकादश रुद्रा द्वादशादित्यास्त एकत्रिंशदिन्द्रश्चैव प्रजापतिश्च त्रयस्त्रिंशाविति"). This means the principle force is only one. But it manifested in different forms for various purposes. These manifestations are Gods. Yadnyavalkya further explained their names and information. Now I will try to provide the information about the 33 Gods in brief.

Vasus: Vasu means the one who gives billiance and wealth. In Sanskrit Vas (root) means to live (in) which formed the word Vasu. The exact origin of the Vasus is debatable. Some scholars say that these are the children of Kashyap and Aditi while others state that of Manu and Bahma. These 8 elemental Gods representing nature and five fundamental elements i.e. Panch Mahabhootas are considered as principle Gods amongst the 33. Now let's see who these 8 Vasus are.

1) Prithvi (Earth): The appellation is used to connote vastness, endlessness. A complementary to the Sky deity, the Earth is a life giver. Rather than any other planet in the universe the Earth has the most creatures living on it.

2) Varun (Water): Water means the lord of rains and oceans is also the lord of the West. With Crocodile as it's mount and noose as its weapon this deity looks absolutely brilliant. It's name derived from the root Vra which means to bind or surround. It surrounds or binds the world in the form of water which itself is a life giver.

3) Agni (Fire): There are different opinions on how the term Agni derived and what it denotes. The most appropriate definition according to me is Agri or the first arrived. In Sanskrit Agra means the tip / first, thus Agni is the first one to arise. Obviously the phenomena like bursts, explosions gave birth to the planets in the universe. Other things like water, air (for life), life developed later on. Though the iconography of Agni also varies commonly it is shown as a deity with a good physique, red complexion, rosary in a hand, flames leaping upwards from his crown, 7 rays of flame / rays emitting from his body and riding on a ram. Swaha is the name of his wife. Thus while offering anything to Agni it is recommended to pronounce her name.

4)Vayu (Air): This lord of air and breath is also known as Prana (life force) as it is not possible to live without breathing. Thus it is one of the most vital life forces and depicted as a brilliant deity. His iconography shows him as very swift, riding on a chariot drawn by horses or gazelles with mace / goad as his weapon. This gorgeous deity is also a guardian of the directions i.e. Dikpal.

5) Aditya (Sun): The sons of Aditi are known as Adityas who are 12 in number. But only the Sun is named as Aditya in this context. He is depicted as a blazing deity with lotus in both the hands and riding a chariot pulled by 7 horses. These 7 graceful horses have derived their names from Sanskrit Chandas (prosody) and they are Gayatri, Brihati, Jagati, Ushnih, Trishtubha, Anushtubha and Pankti. Sandhya and Chhaya are his wives. Aruna is his charioteer and appointed by Brahma to shield the living creatures from the radiant energy of the Sun.

6) Akash (Sky): This Vasu representing the universe, the unfathomable vacuum is also known as Dyaush or Dayushpitru. This Vasu is mostly depicted as having a paternal role or is a fatherly figure. Its iconography shows him as a roaring bull scaring the Earth.

7) Chandra (Moon): Chandra literally means shining with brightness. Also known as Soma, this Vasu has been depicted as white bodied, riding on a chariot pulled by an antelope. As Soma he is depicted as riding on a chariot with 3 wheels drawn by white horses and with a mace in hand. Chandra has 27 wives and at some places he is known as a guardian of rivers and trees; probably due to the drink Somarasa.

8) Nakshatra (Stars): The brilliant stars in the universe are also Vasus. Though we can't directly relate ourselves with all stars, it is clear that the celestial phenomena do get affected by the stars. Mostly the scriptures consider only the Dhruv star as Vasu. But I feel all the stars are Vasus.

Aditya: Adityas refer to offsprings of Aditi. Mostly the term Aditya is used as a synonym for the Sun. But he is not the only Aditya. The exact number of the Adityas is a matter of scholarly debate. But all in all there are 12 Adityas. Nevertheless it is still debatable who these Adityas are. There are various references for their names, so I will try and provide a brief information of the 12 Adityas which I felt are appropriate.

1) Vivasvat: He is also known as Vivasvant or Vivasvan. He is considered as the ancestor of the human race. His wife is Sharayu and Yama, Manu, Ashwins etc are his sons. He is so brilliant that to describe anybody's brilliance the term Vivasvat is used.

2) Aryaman: This Aditya represents a partner, life partner or a companion. He is the guardian of Horses (stallions and mares). Our galaxy, the Milky way, is his path.

3)Tvastr: Or Tvastru is a guardian of art. He is a lord of arts like crafting, ornaments etc. In the sense of a craftsman, he is not only the creator of buildings or nonliving things but he is also the crafter of living beings and womb. He is also the guardian of Soma. He is also considered as the father of Brihaspati and Indra. His iconography shows him wielding a metal axe and riding on a chariot pulled by 2 mares.

4) Savitr: Savitr means impeller, divine influence, a life giver who is born as the vivifying power of the Sun. So the rising Sun is known as Savitr and from sunrise to sunset it is called Surya. In the Gayatri mantra he is referred as Savitur not Surya. In his iconography he is shown as a glorious personality with yellow clothes, golden eyes and hair, golden arms, handsome and with a pleasant tongue. Just like the lord of gold, this Aditya rides a golden chariot pulled by 2 bronze / white footed stallions and illumines   the Earth, heaven and the universe. He is the guardian of movable and immovable things i.e. 'rta' (ऋत). He grants immortality to the Gods and life span to the humans. He also guards the world of spirits, thus he is worshipped for the journey of the souls after death.

5) Bhaga: This Aditya is a protector or a lord who is the God of wealth. He makes sure that all people will receive their share of goods and wealth. He is the lord of Uttara phalguni nakshatra.

6) Dhatr: This Aditya is a lord of health and magic. He is specially worshipped in Tantric sadhanas and major homa or yajnyas.

7) Mitr: 8) Varuna: Mitra and Varuna always appear in a pair and are referred as dwandwa (inseparable / attached).  Varuna is both Aditya and Vasu. Mitra refers to agreement, friendship or treaty. He avoids confrontations and encourages bonding. Mitra is active from dawn to morning period while Varuna is active in the evening time. They are invoked to the place between heaven and Earth. They live in a golden palace with thousands of pillars and doors. They are Asuras, so they wield their powers through secret knowledge or 'maya'. They punish the people who don't speak the truth, thus they conduct 'rta'. Some texts describe them as using their 'maya' to make the Sun traverse the sky and drive their chariot with the rays of the Sun.

9) Ansh: Air is the most important thing needed for life and air can enter anywhere. This Aditya has become a life element in this form. He has been enshrined in every body and life is full of him.

10) Pushan: The name Pushan derives from the Sanskrit verb pushyati which means to make (others) prosperous. This Aditya is a lord of marriages, roads, feeding of cattle and travel. He is the guide of the souls and conducts the souls to the other world. He has knowledge about the road to heaven and many other divine paths. He protects the travelers from wild animals. He is such a radiant Aditya that even the Gods could defeat the darkness of the Asuras with his help. In the iconography he is shown as having braided hair and a beard and rides on a chariot drawn by a goat. He carries a golden axe, awl and a goad. In some scriptures he is shown as having no teeth in his mouth (references vary).

11) Indra: The king of the Gods himself is a very powerful Aditya. He is as brilliant as the Sun. One of Indra's definitions is - Indu means raindrop, so the one who conquered the rain and brought it back to Earth is Indra. He is shown as riding on an elephant with 4 tusks known as Airavat with lightning thunderbolt (Vajra) and a bow as his weapons and has tremendous will power. He killed the evil serpent Vritra, who held back the rains with his thunderbolt and released the rains to nourish the Earth; thus he is the king of rains, lightning, heaven and the Gods. Even though he is married to Shachi he had extra marital affairs. In one such incident he got cursed from sage Gautama due to his misbehaviour with Ahilya.

12) Vamana: This incarnation of Lord Vishnu is also an Aditya. When the king of the Gods Indra was defeated by the noble Asura named Bali, all Gods sought refuge in Lord Vishnu. To help Indra restore his power, Vishnu incarnated as a dwarf called Vamana, Aditi's son. With astuteness Vamana asked for only 3 steps of land at the time of one ritual sacrifice. Heedlessly Bali agreed to it and Vamana being Vishnu himself, covered the worlds in three strides and restored Indra's power. This means Lord Vishnu himself is the Aditya. The preserver of the whole world Lord Vishnu is depicted as blue or dark skin coloured. He carries lotus, mace (Koumodaki), conch (Panchajanya) and war discus Sudarshan chakra. He is shown to be reclining on the coils of the serpent Shesha naga and his mount is Garuda, the eagle.

Rudra is a name derived from the root Rud means to cry or howl. Also Rudan means to cry. The word Rudra has many other meanings though. Basically it means (here) is the one who removes all obstacles. Also Rud means iron or red coloured. So the one who is Roudrarupi or fearsome is Rudra. Now whether this Rudra is a separate deity or Lord Shiva himself is a matter of scholarly debate. Some scholars claim that Rudras are the incarnations of Lord Shiva. Rudra is considered as a lord of wind, storms or hunt. It has two forms, Roudra a fearsome form and Rudan a crying form. In the iconography a Rudra is depicted as carrying a trident and a deer in hand and wearing tiger skin with a garland of skulls and applying ashes from a pyre. Lord Shiva is an eminent Brahmana so he is Sthanu (stationary). So he incarnated in the form of different Rudras according to some texts. According to some 5 Indriyas (eyes-vision, nose- breath, ears-hearing, tongue-taste, skin-touch), 5 Karma indriyas (mukha-mouth, hasta-hands, pada-legs, maladvara-anus, mutradvar-genital) and atma (soul) are 11 Rudras. Now let's see who are these 11 Rudras.

1) Manyu: This means Lord Narasimha himself. Passion is Manyu. Thus he is depicted as fierce, war God, wielding thunder and slayer of foes.

2)Manu: Manu means progenitor of humanity. There are 14 Manus in total. The first Manu i.e, Svayambhuva Manu created Manusmriti. Twelfth Manu is the Rudra known as Rudra-Savarni Manu. In some places he is referred as the son of Shiva and Parvati. Every Manu was born in one Kalpa period respectively.

3) Mahan: This Rudra is as almighty as Lord Shiva.

4) Mahinas: This Rudra is a divinity of the subtle world between the Earth and the Sun.

5) Shiva: Lord Shiva himself is referred as Rudra here. Shi means pervasiveness and va means embodiment of gace. Thus Shiva means the one in which everything lies and who can give anything (never requests). Sharva means killing, the one who kills evil forces is Shiva, is another meaning. Thus he is a Rudra in his 'Shiva' form.

6) Bhava: Bhava means birth, existence, emotions. This Rudra is a lord of emotional stability or realizing about self / existence.

7) Kama: Kama is desire (sexual / emotional). It is one of the four goals (purushartha) of human life, as without Kama human life can not progress. But Kama is not only the sexual desire, but a despisition for anything, enjoyment through art or many other things; it is an abstruse term. This Rudra is a lord of passionate things in human life.

8) Vamadeva: He is one of the five faces of Parashiva. Others are Sadyojata, Aghora, Tatpurusha and Ishan. This Rudra is peace loving, elegant and a poet. The source of air and life force, this Rudra is also associated with Lord Vishnu.

9) Ugrareta: Reta means semen, manhood. As the name suggests, this Rudra is aggressive. He is the lord of force, life force.

10) Rtadhvaja: Rta means balancing movable and immovable creatures, the Earth as a whole. This Rudra has a huge responsibility to follow and guard Rta and is a good ruler.

11) Dhrutavrata: Dhrutavrata means the follower of law and order, a trustworthy. Thus he is responsible for the phenomena in the universe and managing the Earth.

These are the 31 Gods. Now the 31st God is Indra. The king of the Gods Indra is an Aditya and a separate deity also. The 33rd God is Prajapati. He is the creator of the universe. Many texts consider Pajapati and Brahma as one and the same. But these are different Gods. Prajapati is the lord of the people or their creator. He is the creator of heaven, Earth, movable and immovable, Gods, Asuras, eternal force and the cosmic egg. According to some, during the creation process Prajapati incarnated in different forms of Gods or sages in different manvantaras (periods) viz; Rudra, Manu, Sun, Yama, Daksha.

These are the 33 Gods or divine forces. Though many texts give different lists of the 33 Gds. So I feel we should avoid such debates and should practically think about this considering today's world. Rather than being practical we behave as if we decide the dos and don'ts for the Gods. Due to impractical thinking we are entangled in delusional ideologies like Gods never go wrong, they don't have desires (like sexual / greed) etc and we are going away from the divine powers. E.g. consider and sacred text. Some minor details may differ but the story of Indra and Ahilya, Lord Shiva beheading Lord Ganesha, Lord Vishnu's pride or ego, Lord Shiva going sweet on Ravana's worship etc. All these examples show that even Gods get carried away at some point. So a normal human being is nothing compared to these. Nevertheless, every God's form, duty, stories have symbolically represented some important point. The lack of proper interpretation of this symbolism has created many misunderstandings. Let's interpret some of these simple symbolic representations. Savitr is shown as riding on a chariot pulled by bronze or white footed stallions. At the time of Sunrise the sky has shades of bronze - red and white and they are not torrid. Gayatri mantra also mentions Savitra as it is going to rise and go ahead but not intense. The Sun's charioteer is Aruna. He has been appointed to save the Earth and life from the extreme brilliance of the Sun. Now in today's language the ozone layer around the globe saves us from the hot rays of the Sun. Otherwise the Sunrays if directly reach the Earth can burn us. Then Aruna can be the symbolic name of the Ozone layer, isn't it? Look at any God's mount; these are all big small creatures from rats to peacocks. This was probably made to save animals and not underestimate even the smallest animal. Lord Shiva beheaded Ganesha, but joined an elephant's head on his shoulders. Isn't it a big transplantation surgery in today's language? Durga mata was riding on a tiger and killed the evil demons. It represents that women empowerment can lead to proper justice and self defence is not a crime which is accepted by the law system itself. Here the tiger is not only an animal but a symbol of a woman's mind that she can become as strong and ruthless as a tiger if needed. Of Course such symbolic points are slightly altered in the texts to avoid misuse or wrong interpretations. But in our concept of Gods no woman is powerless or helpless.

Now all such interpretations can't be explained in a single article. But with rational thinking and discretion we can understand the symbolism behind the concept of every God. It is not enough to understand these beautiful, meaningful and nature conserving divine preachers, but we have to change our way of worship, festivals etc according to today's needs. If Gods are immortal then we have to change certain paths as the divine energy is going to be the same but will be interpreted differently in every era. Our today's language explaining these theories will be a 'mythology' after hundreds of years. And today's references may become amusing in future. Therefore it is definitely good to think scientifically or logically but we should also consider the parameters used for checking the history facts. On the flip side, adamant orthodox behaviour like not accepting the changes, not being practical will not help us to understand our own Gods; then what are we going to teach our future generations? How can we use old references on as it is basis? Is our lifestyle the same as it was then? Considering all things we should avoid both superstition and disbelief. If we stop overusing and properly conduct worship and behaviour, then only we can understand the GOD. And our beautiful culture will not only be preserved but also will be respected more.

- २ Menstruation and regulations? -2

       ==============================================

In my previous article I described in simple words about what menstruation is, what is mentioned in the sacred texts about it and how to interpret it correctly. Now the important point is about the rules and regulations during menses. Menstruation provides women the opportunity to be a mother. In fact the human race can not survive or grow without it, then why there are so many misconceptions about it? Why menstruation is labeled as something impure? Well, firstly women don't easily come out of the stigma. After menarche the girl is bombarded with instructions about what NOT to do? Instead of giving her the idea that this is the very first step which will bless her with a child in future, she is trained for the regulations to be followed each month.

Though in my opinion the beginning of these customs may have started during the fall of matriarchal and rise of patriarchal system. As in Vedic era there were no such customs which could be harsh on women. In fact women were highly educated, used to be priests etc. Somewhere in the later years the customs and traditions changed drastically. Women were forbidden from education even their dress up was monitored. Cruel practices like Sati / Dowry infiltrated the society and women were forcefully restricted to household work and nurturing children. Nonetheless not all authors of sacred texts had ill intentions. But mainly the wrong interpretations of the texts during this period worsened the situation. Many cruel, baseless customs were portrayed as 'rituals' and women silently / fearfully accepted them. The original texts were doctored and some rituals were forced on the society with a threat that not following these rituals will be a sin. Due to lack of education and awareness even women could not protest. Of course when it comes to India, we can not neglect some important factors which added to such practices like attacks and ruling by different enemies and endeavouring to spoil the Hindu culture. Although this is not only about India, the changes in conduct norms occurred all over the world. And still many societies are following these norms.

In the earlier times i.e. before these kinds of customs were followed there were mixed opinions about menstruation, though many cultures respected the menstruating women.

In ancient Roman culture a menstruating woman was considered sacred and powerful with psychic abilities or even powers to heal the sick people. A naked menstruating woman was thought to scare lightning or whirlwinds, or worms / caterpillars can't harm corn fields if she walks around a field.

There are no rules for menstruation in most branches of Christianity. Though Oriental Orthodox Christianity considered menstruating women as 'impure'.  In 4th century itself Church Fathers defended the women and prescribed to discard any laws against menstruating women. The texts say  'For neither lawful mixture, nor child-bearing, nor the menstrual purgation, nor nocturnal pollution, can defile the nature of a man, or separate the Holy Spirit from him. Nothing but impiety and unlawful practice can do that'. Currently  a few Churches advise women not to receive communion during their menstrual period, but this is not because of any social taboo. But for more intense preparation to approach Christ and due to the physical difficulties faced by women. Latin Churches discarded all such laws against menstruation in as early as the 1st century.

Islam also had no such strict laws against menstruating women. Some rules were set for menstruating women during Ramadan or in mosques during prayers. Apart from that women were not forbidden from pilgrimage, praying, festivals etc. Like all other religions even Islam doesn't allow women to have sex during menstruation and which is a medically correct practice. The liberty of traditional Islam allows physical intimacy and other sexual acts during menses that are not intercourse. This shows that a woman's mental health was also taken care of.

Buddhism views menstruation as 'a natural physical excretion that women have to go through on a monthly basis, nothing more or less'. Due to a very practical view in Buddhism it never had any rules for menstruating women.

Similarly Sikhism also had no rules for menstruating women. Nikky Guninder Kaur-Singh writes ' Guru Nanak openly chides those who attribute pollution to women because of menstruation'.

Hinduism expresses different views on menstruation. Though the views and opinions change with state and culture, to abhor sexual intercourse during menses was a common view. I think considering a woman's health during menstruation this was formed as a 'rule'. Just to avoid any forceful act by males it was mentioned in the texts that having sex during a woman's menses is a sin or leads to the birth of villainous progeny or Asura. Of course this was written to protect the women during menstruation. I have already mentioned the terms used for the menstruating women on each day of menses and the meaning of those terms in my previous article. Additionally the Skanda Purana states that 'unlike men who become impure on coming in contact with impure objects or people, women don't become impure by anything because her impurities are washed away on undergoing menstruation'. Manusmriti also states that after adultery committed mentally or even rape, a woman becomes pure after menstruation. Well there are some tribes like Kalash who follow ancient Sanatana Dharma or ancient Hinduism. Though they reside in Pakistan, they follow Hinduism. They practice gender equality in real terms. During menstruation all women stay at a seperate holy place, respected by men and which is an all female organizing centre. This place helps in maintaining gender solidarity. Women are happy and proud to stay here as they get proper rest without any discrimination. The rise of patriarchal power is slowly changing the norms and harnessing the taboos to intensify womens' oppression.

Similar to Hinduism even Judaism isolated a woman during menstruation and called her 'niddah'. Orthodox Judaism forbade women and men from even touching or passing things to each other during this period. I think though some norms were created considering womens' health and safety, wrong interpretations must have changed the views.

Thinking about today's world some customs are discarded or reformed but due to mistakes in the interpretation of original texts some new conduct norms are set. Now let's know about some current myths about menstruation and their probable origins.

Almost all over the world there is a myth that a woman is responsible for the gender of the baby as she has menstruation. Prominently in countries like India still the cruel practices like dowry / sati are still existing. So a female child is always unwanted. As per medical science a woman has only one type of chromosome set which is important in determining the gender of the baby and that is XX. On the contrary males have XY set of chromosomes. Thus when the embryo is formed, if the X chromosome from male is involved then a female child will be born and if the Y chromosome is involved then a male child will be born. So, the fact is a male is responsible for the gender of the baby. I think as there are more visible hormonal symptoms in females like menstruation, pregnancy etc; she is thought to be responsible for this.

In Poland and some places in India it is believed that sex during menstruation can kill the man. Now avoiding sexual intercourse during menstruation is valid from a medical point of view. But a wrong interpretation of the original texts regarding this point must have created this myth. Perhaps this was written ethically to avoid any kind of physical harassment of women during menstruation. But I guess the interpretation of the words in the older language was not perfectly done in today's languages. Overall I think not only during menses but other times also if men could follow this and stop abusing women, almost all women will be happy.

In many countries women are forbidden from making certain dishes viz. pickles (India, USA, UK), Sushi (Japan), Whipped cream (Argentina), mayonnaise (France). The main reason behind all this is not any superstition but a scientific fact that during menses the body temperature of women is on the higher side. This can affect the ingredients of certain dishes while cooking or preparation and their shelf life will be affected. But this practical view is not considered and myths like menstruation is something bad or ugly has been advocated. Linking this to today's world, most of the houses are air conditioned or at least have refrigerators and all factories where these kinds of foods are prepared are perfectly temperature controlled. So I feel this issue should not be advocated today. All such food factories have many female workers who can't take a leave during menses and still the food items don't get spoiled before their expiry date. Coming to the point the aim of this custom was coherent when it was written but  everything should change with time.

In Bolivia it is believed that a menstruating woman should not cradle the babies as the babies will get sick. In this case also I feel the authors may have a view similar to Hindu texts, but just wrong interpretation must have made it a superstition. If you consider it practically many women have menopausal symptoms like pain, spasms, vomiting etc. Now it is not going to be easy to handle a baby while going through such physical stress. If the symptoms are unbearable it might harm the baby as the woman may lose her balance or can't hold the baby properly. For these practical reasons their older texts must have mentioned this and exaggerated to make women follow this. In today's situation this should be taken positively and practically. If the women in the family go through such health problems then the family members should help her during child care or if financially possible should appoint a lady for that. If we try and find a way depending on the problem, definitely the women will not have to suffer due to  these unnecessary exclusion rules.

In India still some families isolate the menstruating woman in the house. I have already discussed the purpose of the original authors for such 'isolation'. Literally taking 'isolation' causes a problem today as the houses are smaller compared to the spacious houses earlier. Also others are not allowed to touch the utensils or clothes or things touched by the woman in isolation. I think this is a total perversion of the original custom. How can the things touched by a woman during menses be impure? Hygiene could have been taken into account in this case, but to forbid a woman from everything just like ostracizing her and calling her impure is not ethical or not meant by the scriptures. I will repeat what I said earlier that family members can help the menstruating women in the house so that she can get proper rest and mental peace. In fact she should be helped at her work place also.

The biggest myth in India is that women should not worship or perform any religious rituals, festivals during menstruation. This myth is also created due to wrong interpretation of the original scriptures. In earlier days bigger houses had places for worship, probably a bit away in the house. The preparation for rituals or worship needed physical work. So the women had to walk a lot, walk on staircases etc. Also the flowers needed for the rituals could wither fast due the rise in the body temperature of the menstruating woman. (In Romania also it is believed that women should not handle flowers during menses, which has the same scientific reason) Also some spiritual procedures are tough to perform and may affect body temperature due to their power in mantras. Women were forbidden from such rituals during menses as this can affect the blood flow during menstruation. Sadly such scientific and simple recommendations were misinterpreted and afflicting conduct norms became prevalent. Is it possible that God, the eternal power, will forbid women from anything due to menses? How can a very natural process which helps to complete human life and death cycle be called impure? That is why I say that in all rituals except the ones which can be physically stressful for the menstruating women no rules can be applied. Now by understanding the purpose of this I request the new generation to start the change from themselves and also guide the next generation in an ethical and righteous way.

Well, all such myths or superstitions exist around the world. Thankfully the new generation has started to change. But the earlier generation was brought up under the laws of customs and traditions. It won't be easy for them to accept the changes quickly. But somewhere the task has begun and should proceed on the correct path. Frankly after getting such authentic information many people 'feel' like to change their thought process. But the 'feel' has to pass a long way to reach actual 'execution', and the time between them is substantial. These customs are so infused in our minds that they are deeply rooted. When we say 'norm' we never think why it became a 'norm'. Rather than understanding it's purpose we are more afraid that breaking the norms will be a sin. Nothing is permanent then how can these norms or customs be permanent? Dismally the 'rules' overpowered the purposes. The earlier generation may have committed some mistakes but mistakenly we think that elderly people are never wrong. We are nurtured saying that elders should not be cross questioned, then who will provide the answers? The fact is even they have no proper justification except their earlier generation has told them so. Half of such things are just 'heard' from someone which are either baseless or disseminated due to wrong interpretation of the texts. Now the time has changed. There are many sources to accumulate authentic information. The older people should update themselves and accept the facts. The new generation should also educate themselves and explain the elders, without any prejudice. And not only that the new generation should also teach their youngsters about the facts and help them in accepting the correct norms. Such changes with time will help all religions to exist and flourish in future. Especially the Hindu dharma considers everything from a practical and scientific viewpoint. If appropriate guidance is available and we are ready to accept the changes honestly we can reform our culture in the best way possible and live happily without any painful or tormenting customs.

Menstruation and regulations?

        ===============================================

Generally everybody is aware about the natural changes which occur during the puberty of women. But the lack of scientific knowledge and original scriptures lead to many misconceptions and superstitions adding to the inferiority complex in women. Many women across the world have suffered due to this. The concept of gender equality has sadly become a vaunt and many women are not satisfied with their gender even in today's world. In religious countries like India any incident is immediately linked to the religion. Rather than understanding the real or authentic meaning of anything, many rituals or traditions are forged in the name of 'interpretations'. Nobody is concerned about knowing the facts behind it or what the science / scriptures say about it. As an Vedic Astrologer many people ask me questions about the rituals, religion etc. Many women are curious to know about the religious views on rituals (Puja) or worshipping during menses. But their main concern is the fear which plays on their minds that it is a sin. So I decided to write this article, where I am trying to explain about such superstitions.

First, let's understand the concept of menstruation in simple words. Mother nature has honoured women by giving them the physical ability to become a mother. Both men and women have hormones in the body. At different stages of life, these hormones play their roles and there are numerous physical changes in both men and women, like men growing facial hair and women start menstruating etc. Giving birth to  a new life i.e. reproduction needs the fertilization of human egg and sperm. The semen in a human male contains numerous sperms but the female egg is only released once in a month. The egg remains fertile for a very small amount of time. If the implantation occurs during this time period then it establishes the pregnancy. After implantation a thick layer of endometrium is formed to support the life of a baby. If the implantation doesn't occur then the hormonal changes send a signal to the brain that the egg should be discarded. Then the oxygen supply to the epithelial lining is cut off and the cells die. Commonly within 5 / 7 days the whole lining is discarded as menstrual blood. The process repeats every month and continues till the menopause. This was the scientific view, now let's talk about the religious view on menstruation.

When a querent asks about the religious views on menstruation then a standard answer i.e. 'it is written in the sacred texts' is put forward. But is it really written in the sacred books? Let's try and find out the answer. When a woman is menstruating she is called a 'Rajasvala' in sanskrit. This means the one from whose body the Rajas flows like a river. Literally Raj means a dust particle. So the notion actually means that the dead cells (menstrual blood) are like dust particles or discardable material like urine / faeces. The Parashara Smriti has nicely described the state of a menstruating woman on each day of menstruation. Parashara has beautifully painted in words "प्रथमेहनि चांडाली द्वितीये ब्रह्मघातिनी, तृतीये रजकी प्रोक्ता चतुर्थेहनि शुद्ध्यति" (Prathamehni Chandali Dwitiye Brahmaghatini, Tritiye Rajaki Prokta Chaturthehani shudhyati). He calls the woman on her first day of menses as 'Chandali'. The name derives from Goddess Chandali, the Indian deity's form and depiction in the scriptures. I think the deity is actually Guhya Chandali Devi. She is aggressive ('Chand') and forceful and is very secretive (Guhya) in nature. All her ornaments are made of thorns. She has a third eye. Her crown is also made up of thorns and in it is the symbol of the Panch Pret Bhairavas. Her breasts are portrayed like the breasts of demon Putana (from mahabharata). The area surrounding her nipples is dark which signifies poison. She wears the garland of skulls. Behind her there is fire to depict her aura. She is also sometimes portrayed in Avadhuta state (naked). This portrayal of the Goddess is so thoughtfully selected that it startlingly relates to the menstruating woman on her first day. Naturally on the first day of menses the woman becomes aggressive, gets irritated quickly due hormonal and other changes in her body. The breasts become heavy and hard and sometimes painful. The body temperature rises. The dead cells are thrown out of the body, which if not discarded can become toxic. Continuous blood flow and other natural limitations cause the woman to think the whole process is stinging like horns. Just think about it psychologically, the monthly cycle and consequent restrictions can make a woman aggressive or cause irritability. And of course she would like to keep it a secret (As when these texts were written there were no restrictions on women to sit isolated, not at least like today's way).

On the second day of menses the woman is called a 'Brahmaghatini'. This is a tricky word derived from 'Brunhan' which means nourishing. As during ovulation the woman had a chance to fertilize the egg and give birth to a new life and nourish it in the womb, but she did not. So this is indirectly the 'Ghat' or shunning nature. The word 'Brahmaghatini' simply signifies this process of rejecting or avoiding pregnancy. But the use of the word Brahm caused controversy and made these great writers infamous.
On the third day of menses the woman is called 'Rajaki' which literally means washerwoman. Now this again created controversy as this is a caste in India. But here the writer is not talking about the caste but he wants to relate it to the process of washing clothes. In a spiritual context a human body is like garments. Even Lord Shri Krishna says in Shrimad Bhagvad Geeta "वासांसि जीर्णानि यथा विहाय नवानि गृण्हाति नरोपराणि, तथा शरीराणि विहाय जीर्णान्यन्यानि संयाति नवानि देही" which means as a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, similarly, the soul accepts new material bodies, giving up the old ones. With this reference the menstruating woman is compared with the washerwoman. As the washerwoman washes the clothes to remove all dirt the same way the menstruating woman removes the dirt from her body. Now why is this simile used for the third day? The reason is on the third day of menses most of the dead cells are already discarded and on the fourth day very little of it or nothing remains. Thus on the third day the state of the menstruation and washed clothes can be compared. But not on the first two days as much of the dead cells are still inside the body. See how scientific it is? And if we understand this thoughtful simile many misunderstandings can be cleared.

On the fourth day of menses the blood flow is significantly reduced. The writers say the woman becomes 'pure' on this day. Now this purity means the clean body after discarding the unwanted material from the body. As we become temporarily 'impure' after urination / defecating, the same way a woman is impure during menstruation and which is very natural. On the fourth day the woman is recommended to wash her hair. This is only and only related to hygiene and nothing else. As during the first three days the menstrual blood and other impurities may have remained in the body including her hair. Most of the writers recommend taking a bath after the sunrise. Even the writers of Smritis say  "चतुर्थेऽहनि कुर्वीत स्नानमभ्युदिते रवौ". which means the bath should not be taken before sunrise. Again it is about hygiene and we all know that the sun rays have a germicidal effect. They say "सूर्योदयात्पूर्वं स्नानाचरणं तु दुराचार एव" which means the bath taken on the fourth day before sunrise is a malpractice. This is only written to make that woman take a bath after sunrise to avoid any infection or any accident in the dark. Probably the bathrooms were away from the bedrooms or a bit isolated at that time so such precautions were recommended. If we can understand the notions and their intentions, it will definitely help to clear our misunderstandings.

Katyayana has mentioned that during menses women should avoid heavy meals / sweets / spicy / bitter foods. Even this comment of his is also from  a  scientific point of view. Heavy meals can lead to indigestion or stomach problems which might cause excessive urination or defecation. Spicy food may increase the body heat and consequently affect the menstrual flow and too much bitter / sweet food can lead to acidity or other issues. Overall these recommendations by the authors are regarding the health of the menstruating woman and not about blind beliefs or superstitions.

Really speaking Hinduism gives so much respect to the women that there is a notion which says 'As mother Earth becomes a virgin after the monsoon, similarly a woman again becomes a virgin after child birth' It is really sad that the religion with such beautiful thoughts that honour a woman after becoming a mother, has been spoiled in the new era where the women are suffering during their menses. Well, all these hormonal and other changes only occur in women? NO. Males too go through all such changes. When a woman's menses stop she attains a menopause, same way a man after a certain age attains menopause. This is because just like a woman a man also starts losing his reproductivity. The only difference I guess is these changes in men are not so visible as compared to women. This can be one of the reasons why only females are recommended to follow more strict rules than males. Overall our society has put lots of restrictions on women. In addition to it, if a woman has to face the restrictions during menses (i.e. every month), this can be really suffocating. But very few men think about womens' mental health. Rather I would say even women also never come out of their cocoon of religious norms. It may be menses or any other thing, women force the younger women to follow these so called 'rules'.  From gender descrimination at birth to sterility at any given point mostly women have to suffer. Sadly due to lack of knowledge and no interest in learning the proper interpretation of sacred texts the gender equality is only on papers.

Now the question arises that our ancestors have thoughtfully and logically written the sacred texts in a very informative way considering the scientific point of view. In spite of this, why do so many misconceptions and superstitions exist in our society ? I think the first reason behind it is that we don't take into account the difference between the times i.e. when these texts were written and today. We are adamant that all the scriptures should be followed 'as it is' and this view should be changed first. We just forget a simple logical thing that the rituals / ways of life applicable in ancient era can't be executed without change in today's world. In earlier days there was no electricity, mobile, tv, radio or any kind of gadgets available. The difference between the two eras is vast. The standard of living, education system, marriage system, earning.... everything has changed with time. But nobody thinks from this perspective. Secondly most of the ancient texts are written in poetic format, thus notions or similes are to be interpreted carefully. Due to our adamant views we try to 'translate' them as it is rather than interpreting them, and this causes confusion. The third reason is whenever a querent is recommended any remedy (Puja / chanting etc) he / she will never ask the authenticity or meaning of the remedy to the authorised person. More attention is given towards the 'rules' rather than the concept. It is just like mugging up and appearing for the exam. The elderly people or authorities just force the new generation to follow the rules strictly or it will be a sin according to them. But they are not keen about teaching the vast knowledge in shastras / scriptures, probably because they themselves don't have it (???). A prosperous country with spiritual and religious richness like India is still 'developing' in today's world and Hinduism still remains behind because of such misunderstandings, lack of proper understanding of our knowledge filled scriptures and superstitions. Due to many attacks and ruling by foreigners, dirty politics and male dominance in our culture, many sacred texts were wrongly or conveniently 'translated' but hardly interpreted. The female dominant society gradually changed to male dominant society with incomprehensible changes. These all events resulted in drastic but tragic changes in our society. The questions which arise today are answered conveniently by the so called authorities.

Well, I have tried to explain the scientific and religious views about menstruation in this article. Of course it is not possible to include all points in a single article, but I have covered the important ones. Another important point is these kind of misconceptions and superstitions about menstruation exist not only in India, but all over the world. It is not only about Indian culture but reality is the developed countries have started improving and having a broader view. Still this topic is not so easily and openly talked about as it should be. Now what are these myths about menstruation all over the world? how they possibly originated? and how to clear the doubts and follow the shastras?. I will write about it in my next article.
