हॉटेल सिसिल - एक बाधिक (?)वास्तू ( Hotel Cecil = A Haunted (?) place)

मागील लेखात मी बाधिक वास्तू म्हणजे काय याची माहिती देण्याचा प्रयत्न केला. जगात अनेक वास्तू 'बाधिक' म्हणून गणल्या जातात. त्यात तथ्य किती आणि अवडंबर किती हे ठरवणं कठीण आहे. अशाच एका 'बाधिक' म्हणून प्रसिद्ध असणाऱ्या वास्तूबद्दल मी वाचकांना माहिती देत आहे.  

१९२४ साली अमेरीकेतील लॉस अँजेलिस इथे हॉटेल व्यावसायिक विल्यम हॅनर यांनी मोठ्या हौशीनं हॉटेल सिसिल (Hotel Cecil) उभारलं. प्रवासी व्यावसायिक, हौशी प्रवासी अशा लोकांची सोय करणं हा या हॉटेलचा मुख्य उद्देश होता. असं म्हणतात कि हॅनर यांनी त्या काळचे तब्बल १ लाख डॉलर केवळ हॉटेलच्या पुढील भागाच्या सजावटीसाठी खर्च केले. एकूण ७०० खोल्या असलेलं हे प्रशस्त हॉटेल खरं तर लॉस अँजेलिसचं आकर्षण बनायला हवं होतं. पण पुढील काही वर्षांतच अनेक वाईट घटना, आत्महत्या, हत्या आणि इतर विचित्र गोष्टींमुळे हे हॉटेल 'बाधिक' आहे की काय अशी शंका सगळ्यांना येऊ लागली. अभ्यासकांच्या आकलनापलीकडील काही गोष्टी इथे घडल्या. त्यातील प्रत्येक गोष्ट खोलात सांगणं शक्य नाही पण महत्त्वाच्या घटना मी इथे जरूर विस्तारानं सांगेन. 

एकूण १६ च्या वर आत्महत्या - हत्या आणि ज्यांना 'पारलौकिक' म्हणता येईल अशा घटनांची नोंद या हॉटेल संदर्भात कायदेशीररित्या आहे. माझं स्पष्ट मत आहे की यापेक्षा अनेक जास्त पारलौकिक घटना इथे घडल्या असतील. पण काही कारणास्तव त्याची नोंद केली गेली नाही. 

असो, नोव्हेंबर १९३१ मध्ये एका ४६ वर्षीय व्यक्तीनं हॉटेल सिसिल मध्ये खोट्या नावानं खोली घेतली. एका आठवड्यानंतर त्यानं विषारी गोळ्या घेऊन आत्महत्या केली. ही ह्या हॉटेलमधील मृत्यूची सर्वात पहिली नोंद आहे. त्यानंतर दरवर्षी काही ना काही घडतच होतं. उदा: १९३४ मध्ये या हॉटेल मधील एका खोलीत लुईस बोर्डेन नावाच्या सैन्य अधिकाऱ्यानं वस्त-यानं स्वतःचा गळा कापून घेतला. पण काही वेगळ्या घटनांनी सर्वांचं लक्ष वेधून घेतलं. त्या घटना अशा आहेत. 

१९४४ मध्ये या हॉटेल मध्ये राहणाऱ्या १९ वर्षीय डोरोथी परसेल हिनं त्याच ठिकाणी एका बाळाला जन्म दिला. डोरोथीच्या मते ती गर्भवती असल्याचं तिला ठाऊकच नव्हतं (?). तिनं ते नवजात बालक मृत आहे असं समजून त्याला खिडकीतून फेकून दिलं. त्या बालकाच्या मृत्यूनंतर तिला मानसिक रोगी ठरवलं गेलं.  

१९४७ साली लॉस अँजेलिस मध्येच राहणारी व चित्रपट क्षेत्रात नाव कमावण्यासाठी धडपडणारी २३ वर्षांची एलिझाबेथ शॉर्ट हिनं याच हॉटेल मध्ये काही काळ मद्यपान केलं. त्यानंतर तिची अत्यंत निर्घृणपणे हत्या झाली. तिच्या मृत्यूनंतर तिच्या शरीराची अशी विटंबना झाली की त्याची तपासणी करणाऱ्या पोलिसांचाही थरकाप उडाला. तिच्या शरीराचे मध्यभागी कापून २ तुकडे केले होते. तिच्या चेहऱ्यावर तोंडाजवळ असा वार केला कि तोंडाच्या एका टोकापासून दुसऱ्या टोकापर्यंत मोठी चीर दिली गेली. तो रक्तबंबाळ भाग जणू मोठं हास्य असल्यासारखा पण भयानक दिसत होता ज्याला 'ग्लासग्लो स्माईल' असं म्हटलं जातं. तिचे अनेक अवयव आणि आतडी कापून वेगळी केली गेली. अशा अत्यंत भयानक स्थितीत सापडलेल्या तिच्या नग्नावस्थेतल्या शवाची आधी ओळखच पटत नव्हती. त्या वेळी त्या शवाला 'ब्लॅक डाहलिया' असं नाव दिलं गेलं. आजही तिची हत्या कोणी केली हे गूढ उकललेलं नाही.  

१९६२ साली सिसिल हॉटेल मधील एका खोलीतून २७ वर्षीय पौलिन ऑटन हिनं आत्महत्या करण्यासाठी उडी मारली. रस्त्यावरून जाणाऱ्या आणि ह्या घटनेशी काहीही संबंध नसणाऱ्या एका ६५ वर्षीय व्यक्तीवर ती आदळली. यामुळे त्या निष्पाप व्यक्तीचाही जीव गेला. 

या काळात सिसिल हॉटेल मध्ये इतक्या आत्महत्या घडल्या की तेथील रहिवाशांनी या हॉटेलला 'द सुईसाईड' (The Suicide) म्हणजेच आत्महत्या होण्याचं ठिकाण असं नाव ठेवलं. आत्महत्येसाठी कोणी प्रवृत्त होतं तेव्हा त्या व्यक्तीचं इतकं मानसिक खच्चीकरण झालेलं असतं की त्यापासून त्याला परावृत्त करणं खूप कठीण असतं. पण अशा व्यक्तींना घरी वा बाकी ठिकाणांपेक्षा याच हॉटेलमध्ये येऊन जीव द्यावा असं वाटणं हे संशोधकांसाठी नक्कीच अनाकलनीय होतं.    

          

त्यानंतरही अनेक भीतीदायक घटना सिसिल हॉटेल मध्ये घडल्या. काहींची नोंद तर झालीच नाही. १९८०च्या दशकात हे हॉटेल म्हणजे गर्दशी संबंधित टोळ्या, खुनी, गुन्हेगार यांचा अड्डाच बनलं. काळी जादू करणारे लोकही ह्या हॉटेलचा आसरा घेऊन इथं राजरोसपणे आपली कृत्यं करू लागले. ह्या हॉटेलच्या गच्चीवर कोणालाही प्रवेशबंदी होती. तरीही ह्या हॉटेलच्या गच्चीवर काळी जादू केल्याचे पुरावे नंतरच्या तपासणीत मिळाले. अत्यंत गूढ असे संदेश आणि इतर काही पुरावे यावरून हे सिद्ध झालं की इथं वामकृत्यं केली गेली. अर्थात कोणी कितीही नाकारलं तरी यात हॉटेलच्या कर्मचाऱ्यांचा सहभाग किमान पैशाच्या लोभानं दिलेली सूट होती हे उघडच आहे. पण ह्याबद्दल कोणतेही पुरावे कधीच उघड केले गेले नाहीत. 

१९८५ साली प्रसिद्ध सिरीयल किलर रिचर्ड रमीरेझ याच हॉटेल मध्ये वास्तव्य करत होता. अत्यंत निर्दयी असा हा साखळी हत्या करणारा, हत्या केल्यानंतर याच हॉटेल मध्ये राहायला येत असे. शैतानाचा खूप मोठा पुजारी असणारा हा हत्यारा इथेच आपल्या शैतानाची पूजा करत असे. हत्या केल्यानंतर रक्तानं माखलेले कपडे तो ह्याच हॉटेलच्या पाठी लपवत असे. नंतर तो हॉटेलच्या मोकळ्या जागेत नग्नावस्थेत किंवा आंतर्वस्त्रांवर फिरत असे. यावर कोणाच्याच भुवया कशा उंचावल्या नाहीत ? असा प्रश्न पत्रकार जॉश डीन यांनी उपस्थित केला होता. म्हणूनच ह्या हॉटेल मधील कर्मचाऱ्यांच्या आणि व्यवस्थापकांच्या वागण्यावर थोडा संशय येतो. तो राहत असणारी खोली नंतर कायमची बंद केली असली तरीही त्याच्या तिथल्या वास्तव्यामुळेच एक प्रकारची भीती लोकांच्या मनात बसली. 'नाईट स्टॉकर' म्हणून नाव दिला गेलेला हा सिरीयल किलर राजरोसपणे हत्यांच्या काळात इथं राहत होता. 

१९९१ मध्ये आणखी एका सिरीयल किलरनं इथं वास्तव्य केलं. 'व्हिएन्ना स्ट्रँगलर' म्हणून प्रसिद्ध असलेला जॅक अंटरविगर मूळचा ऑस्ट्रियाचा. तिथं तो खुनासाठी जन्मठेप भोगत होता. पण त्या काळातच त्यानं अनेक कविता, पुस्तकं, नाटकं इतकंच काय तर आत्मचरित्रही लिहिलं. तो लिखाणामुळे इतका प्रसिद्धीला आला की अगदी जगप्रसिद्ध अशा लेखकांनीही त्याच्या सुटकेसाठी आंदोलनं केली. शेवटी १९९० ला त्याची सुटका झालीही, पण ती केवळ आणखी काही निष्पाप जीव जाण्यासाठीच. कारण त्यानंतर तो १९९१ मध्ये अमेरिकेतील सिसिल हॉटेलमध्ये आला आणि पुन्हा हत्येचं सत्र सुरु झालं. ह्याच हॉटेल मध्ये रिचर्ड रमीरेझ असल्यामुळे जॅक दुसरीकडे न जाता इथेच राहिला असंही काही लोकांचं म्हणणं आहे. रिचर्ड प्रमाणे जॅकही हत्येनंतर राजरोसपणे ह्या हॉटेलमध्ये राहत असे. 

२०१३ मध्ये एक वेगळ्याच प्रकारची गूढ हत्या सिसिल हॉटेलमध्ये झाली. २१ वर्षांची कॅनडाची रहिवासी असलेली एलिसा लॅम (Elisa Lam)इथं शिक्षणासाठी राहत होती. ती मानसिक दृष्ट्या संतुलित नव्हती आणि त्यासाठी औषधं घेत होती. पण ३१ जानेवारीला ती गायब झाल्याची तक्रार नोंदवली गेली. त्यानंतर तिचा शोध घेऊनही फायदा झाला नाही. पण त्याच हॉटेलमधील लिफ्ट मध्ये अत्यन्त विचित्र हालचाली करतानाचा तिचा एक व्हिडिओ समोर आला. हा व्हिडिओ योग्य पद्धतीनं न दाखवता त्यात बदल केले गेलेत असे आरोप आजही होत आहेत. त्यानंतर फेब्रुवारीच्या दुस-या आठवड्यापासून सिसिल हॉटेलच्या रहिवाशांनी पिण्याच्या पाण्याला विचित्र 'मजेशीर' (?) चव असल्याचं आणि पाण्याचा रंग काळपट असल्याचं सांगितलं. त्यानंतर पाहणी केली असता १९ फेब्रुवारीला तिचं नग्न शव पाण्याच्या टाकीत सापडलं. या मृत्यूला अनेक कांगोरे आणि 'योगायोग' आहेत. तिनं आत्महत्या केली असं हॉटेल मधील कर्मचारी म्हणत होते. पण गच्चीवर कोणालाही प्रवेश नसताना ती तिथे पोहोचून पाण्याच्या टाकीचं खूप वजनी झाकण उघडून आत कशी गेली याचं कोणतंही समाधानकारक उत्तर आजही मिळालेलं नाही. दुसरा योगायोग म्हणजे, त्या वेळी लॉस अँजेलिस मध्ये जे टीबीच्या जंतूंचं संशोधन चालू होतं त्या तपासणीच्या साधनाचं नाव होतं 'लॅम एलायसा'. उच्चार वेगळा असला तरी इंग्रजी स्पेलिंग Lam Elisa हेच आहे. तिच्यावर बलात्कार झाला असण्याची दाट शक्यता असूनही त्यासंबंधीचं कोणतंही तपासणीचं निदान खात्रीलायक नाही. तिच्या मृत्यू पूर्वी तिनं लिहिलेले काही सोशल मीडिया वरील लेख अत्यंत संशयास्पद आणि कोणीतरी लिहिलेले किंवा जबरदस्तीने लिहून घेतलेले वाटतात. तिच्या मृत्यूनंतरही त्या ठिकाणी लेखन चालू होतं. तिचा मोबाईल कधीच मिळाला नाही. सगळ्यात मोठी योगायोगाची गोष्ट म्हणजे एलिसाच्या मृत्यूच्या आठ वर्षे आधी 'डार्क वॉटर' नावाचा एक चित्रपट आला होता. त्याची कथा आणि एलिसाचा मृत्यू यात ९५ % साम्य आहे. इतकंच काय तर या चित्रपटातील नायिकेचं नाव आहे सिसिलिया (Cecilia) आणि तिच्या आईचं नाव आहे डाहलिया (Dahlia). एलिसाच्या मृत्यूचं खापर अर्थातच तिच्या मानसिक रोगावर फोडलं गेलं. काही लोकांच्या मते एलिसा 'एलिव्हेटर गेम' नावाचा जपानी खेळ खेळत होती जो पारलौकिक शक्तींशी संबंधित आहे. यानंतर या संबंधी अनेक दावे केले गेले पण एलिसाच्या मृत्यूचं गूढ अजूनही एक गूढच आहे. तिचा मृत्यू एक अपघात आहे अशी नोंद केली गेली आहे.  

आता मी वर दिलेल्या घटना सर्वच बाबतीत पारलौकिक आहेत असं मुळीच नाही. अशी अनेक हॉटेलं किंवा ठिकाणं आहेत जिथं हत्या, आत्महत्या घडतात. त्यात बळी पडलेल्यांची वैयक्तिक कारणंही खूप असतात. गुन्हेगारी, पोलिसांचं / राजकीय संरक्षण असे अनेक मुद्दे यात येतात. पण हे हॉटेल थोडं वेगळ्या कारणामुळे मला विचित्र वाटलं. इथे घडलेल्या घटना, सिरीयल किलर्सचं वास्तव्य, काळी जादू आणि तत्सम प्रकार ह्या गोष्टी तर आहेतच. पण पहिल्यापासूनच ह्या वास्तूत राहणाऱ्या लोकांना अनेकदा भास होणं, भीती वाटणं, आवाज येणं अशा गोष्टी घडल्या आहेत. इथे आल्यानंतर आत्महत्येचे विचार प्रबळ झाले किंवा नैराश्य आलं असंही बऱ्याच लोकांचं म्हणणं आहे. अर्थात यात मानसशास्त्राचा अभ्यास आवश्यक आहे. अनेकांच्या मृत्यूपूर्वीचं शेवटचं ठिकाण हॉटेल सिसिल आहे. इथला अभ्यास करणाऱ्या अनेक संशोधकांनी इथल्या जागेबद्दल इथे राहिल्यावर 'विचित्र' वाटण्याचे अनुभव सांगितले आहेत. गुन्हेगारी जगतातील किंवा इतर वेळीही अनेकांना काळ्या जादूसाठी 'मदत' म्हणूनही वाईट गोष्टी इथं घडवल्या गेल्या आहेत. माझ्या मते ज्या जागेवर हे हॉटेल बांधलं गेलं त्या जागेतील दोष, दिशादोष अशी काही वास्तूशास्त्राशी निगडित कारणं यामागे असू शकतील. किंवा सुरुवातीच्या काळात जे मृत्यू इथं झाले त्यांची वासनाशवं इथे वावरत असावीत. कारण काही महिन्यांच्या अंतरानं इथे दुर्दैवी घटना घडतच गेल्या. त्यामुळे खूप वर्षांपूर्वी मरण पावलेल्या व्यक्तींचा इथं संबंध येत नाही. म्हणूनच नुकत्याच मरण पावलेल्या वेगवेगळ्या व्यक्तींची वासनाशवं इथं वावरत असण्याची दाट शक्यता आहे. तसंच हे हॉटेल वाममार्गी कृत्यांसाठी वापरलं जायचं हे बऱ्याच लोकांना ठाऊक होतं. त्यामुळे कोणी सिद्ध तांत्रिक इथं राहत असल्याची किंवा इथं वावरणाऱ्या अतृप्त आत्म्यांचा त्यानं वापर केल्याची शक्यता नाकारता येत नाही. ह्या हॉटेल मध्ये घडलेले सर्व मृत्यू अनैसर्गिकच होते. त्यामुळे मृतात्म्याला कोणती योनी मिळाली असेल हे सांगणं अवघड आहे. मृत व्यक्तींची वैयक्तिक कारणं आणि मृत्यूपूर्वी इथं घडलेल्या गूढ गोष्टी यांचा विचार करता तांत्रिक (वाममार्गी) घटनांची शक्यता आहे असं माझं मत आहे.      

सारासार विचार केल्यास यातील काही घटनांचा अर्थ आपण लावू शकतो. काही घटनांचा अर्थ न लागण्यामागे त्यामागील मुख्य कारणं आणि पुरावे लपवले गेले असण्याची शक्यताही खूप आहे. तसंच एकदा अशी प्रसिद्धी झाल्यावर आर्थिक फायद्यासाठी काही गोष्टी फुगवूनही सांगितल्या गेल्या असतील. या सर्व शक्यतांचा सगळ्या बाजुंनी विचार करूनच वाचकांनी यात तथ्य किती हे ठरवावं. केवळ माहिती म्हणून मी हा लेख लिहिला आहे. 

आज हॉटेल सिसिलचं नाव बदलून स्टे ऑन मेन (Stay on Main) केलं आहे. त्याचं रूपही बदललं आहे. नवीन सुधारणा करून हा काळा इतिहास पुसण्याचा प्रयत्न आजच्या हॉटेल चालकांनी नक्कीच केला आहे. पण आजही या हॉटेलमधील घडलेल्या घटनांचा विसर कोणालाही पडलेला नाही. अनेक अनुत्तरीत गोष्टींमुळे ' स्टे ऑन मेन' पेक्षा 'हॉटेल सिसिल' लोकांच्या स्मरणात आहे.

In my previous article I tried to explain the concept of 'haunted places'. Of course, worldwide there are many places considered as 'haunted' but it is really difficult to figure out the actual number of authentically haunted places. Well, I am trying to present the inside story of one of such famous haunted places here. 

In 1924, hotelier William Hanner from Los Angeles, USA passionately built the Hotel Cecil in Downtown Los Angeles. It was primarily built as a destination for the business travellers and tourists. He was as keen as mustard about every detail of the hotel and it is said that he spent almost $ 1 million for the opulent marble lobby of the hotel. The commodious hotel with 700 guest rooms should have been the center of attraction in LA. But beneath this glittering surace laid a troubled past and a history of darkness. After only a few years of opening the hotel it became the site of suicides, murders and other grisly unexplained events. This led to the sprawling of the conspiracy that the Hotel Cecil might be 'Haunted'. Even some paranormal researchers found the gruesome history of this hotel inexplicable. All the details of these numerous grisly events are not possible to write here, but I will describe a few important incidences associated with the hotel. 

Well, after just a few years of opening the hotel i.e. in November 1931 a 46 year old person booked a room in the Hotel Cecil under a false name. After just one week of checking in this person was found dead in his room after consuming poisonous capsules. This was the earliest recorded death in the hotel. Then almost every year some unfortunate and mysterious events occurred which gave an unparalleled reputation for the macabre to this hotel. For example, in 1934, former Army Medical Corps Sgt. Louis Borden, was found dead in his room at the Hotel Cecil. He slashed his throat with a razor. There were many such eerie suicides and deaths in the hotel. But a few remarkable events took the whole Los Angeles to storm. Here are a few of them. 

In 1944, 19 years old Dorothy Purcell gave birth to a baby boy in the hotel while she was sharing the room with her boyfriend. According to her, she was unaware that she was pregnant (?). Thinking her new born baby was dead, she threw him out of the window. Though she was first charged with murder, later on she was not found guilty by the reason of insanity. 

In 1947, an aspiring actress and resident of Los Angeles, Elizabeth Short was seen at the Hotel Cecil's bar. Later on she was gruesomely murdered. Her body was discovered in such a rebarbative condition that the scene made the police officers' hair stand on the end. Elizabeth Short's naked body was found severed into two pieces. Her face had been slashed from the corners of her mouth to her ears, creating an effect known as the glasgow smile. She had several cuts on her body, where entire portions of flesh had been sliced away. This naked dead body when discovered, was not even recognizable. And it was posthumously named as 'Black Dahlia'. Till date the murder case is a mystery.  

In 1962, 27 year old Pauline Otton jumped from the window of her room in Hotel Cecil. Tragically she landed on a 65 years old pedestrian who was just walking by and had no connection with her. This killed them both instantly. 

Throughout the 1940s to the 1960s so many suicides occurred at the Hotel Cecil that the long time residents of the hotel had begun to call the Cecil "The Suicide". When people have suicidal tendencies, they are so emasculated that it really becomes difficult to get them out of the tight spot, though it is exigent. But researchers or police found it difficult to exactly know the reason behind the victims to choose this hotel as a suicide spot, rather than choosing their own homes or other locations. 

Later on also the hotel still remained a site for some unexplained eerie events. Some events just went unrecorded. In 1980s when already the tragic incidences had contributed to the hotel's body count, it also became a joint for the notorious criminals, drug dealers, junkies and serial killers. Satanic rituals were regularly performed in the hotel, though these kinds of sneaky activities were properly veiled. There was no access to the roof of the Hotel Cecil to the residents or visitors. But while inspecting the hotel after a murder case, it was revealed that some satanic rituals have been performed on the roof of the hotel. Some mysterious codes and other evidences proved that the rituals were performed. Though the 'associated' people have given it the thumbs down, it is an open secret that the staff of the hotel was directly or indirectly involved in these sneaky acts, probably for the money they were offered. Though it was obvious that without their support, it was not possible to perform such acts in the hotel, no allegation was ever accepted. 

In 1985, notorious serial killer Richard Ramirez stayed in the Hotel Cecil. The merciless serial killer stayed here during his horrific killing spree. A satanist and a devotee of Lucifer used to perform his rituals in his hotel room. After murdering a victim he used to dump his bloody clothes into the hotel's dumpster. Then he used to saunter into the hotel lobby either naked or only in underwear. On this journalist Josh Dean writes " none of which would have raised an eyebrow". Due to such reasons there is always a question mark on the behaviour of the staff members or management of the Hotel Cecil. Well, though the room where Richard resided was closed and never allotted to any resident again, the temporary home of this horrific killer had created fear in peoples' minds. Dubbed as the 'Night Stalker', Richard Ramirez could stay in the hotel with his blood soaked lifestyle.   

In 1991 Hotel Cecil served as a temporary home for one more serial killer. Dubbed as 'Vienna Strangler' the Austrian serial killer Jack Unterweger also stayed here during his second killing spree. In Austria the convicted murderer was serving life sentence for a murder. While imprisoned he wrote poems, plays, short stories and even an autobiography. He became so famous that even a campaign to pardon and release Unterweger from prison began. Supported by world famous authors, this campaign was so aggressive that finally he was released in 1990. Sadly this release merely proved to be fatal for more innocent lives. Because in the next year he came to the USA and stayed in the Hotel Cecil to start his next killing spree. According to some researchers Jack chose this hotel because he was influenced by Richard Ramirez. Just like Richard, even Jack stayed here with his blood soaked lifestyle. 

In 2013, due to another mysterious murder case, the stories about the Hotel Cecil's spooky environment swirled once more. 21 year old Canadian student Elisa Lam was staying at the hotel. Reportedly she was a patient of bipolar disorder and was under proper medication. She was missing from January 31st and her parents reported the case to the police. Even after search and thorough investigation nothing could be found in her case. Then her allegedly last surveillance footage was published, where she was behaving erratically in the elevator of the hotel. Even today, the people demanding justice for Elisa are claiming that the video was doctored. During her search in February second week the hotel guests began complaining about the dark colour of the tap water and it's 'funny' (?) taste. On February 19th Elisa's naked body was discovered in the water tank of the hotel. This strange case has many angles and haps. According to hotel management, she committed suicide but there is no access to the roof of the hotel. Then how her body was found inside the water tank with a very heavy lid which is impossible for a woman of Elisa's stature to lift up. This question remains unanswered. Another creepy coincidence is at the time of Elisa's death a study on tuberculosis was going on in LA. The kit used for the test was called 'Lam Elisa'. There was a very high possibility that she was raped and murdered, but the total investigation was botched from the beginning. Some of her social media blogs written allegedly by her really seem dubious, as if they were edited or written by somebody else or she was forced to write them. Even some blogs were published after her death. Her mobile was never recovered. The eeriest coincidence of all is definitely disturbing. 8 years before the death of Elisa Lam, a film named Dark Water was released. The plot of the movie and the whole incidence of Elisa Lam case has almost 90% similarity. Not only the story, but even the names of the characters in the movie like the main female character named Cecilia and her mother named Dahlia is a very eerie coincidence. Well, Elisa Lam's death was ruled out as an accident (which is hard to believe) and her mental illness was held responsible for it. A few researchers believe that she was playing the 'Elevator Game' which is related to supernatural powers according to some Asian folklore. In spite of many theories presented, this case still remains cold and sadly and (wrongfully) ruled out as an accidental death.   

Not all of these and other creepy incidents occurred in the Hotel Cecil are necessarily paranormal. There are many such places or hotels all over the world which are suicide or murder spots. The victims have their personal reasons for their deaths too. Also crimes, protection by corrupt police / politicians are some of the points to be considered. Nonetheless, I felt something weird about this hotel. The eerie incidents, a paradise of satanists and serial killers, satanic rituals are all notable points here. But right from the beginning the guests staying in the hotel had some weird experiences like hallucinations, unexplained fear or hearing noises etc. Many people have shared their experiences of becoming more prone to suicide or depression in the hotel area. Obviously a thorough study of psychology is needed to come to any conclusion. In the main, the fact still remains that this hotel was the last place where many people were seen before their deaths. Many researchers who stayed here for the study of this place have also experienced weird things. So many times satanic or similar kinds of rituals were performed to 'help' criminals or other satanic practitioners here. I opine that along with all these creepy factors even the faults in the plot on which the hotel was constructed and other Vastu doshas must have contributed to the dark history of this hotel. Such causes are still unexplored. One more point to be noted is, may be the frequent deaths were responsible for the living shells wandering in the hotel premises, as the deaths were unnatural. As the deaths occurred at the interval of a few months, there is no question of people dying years back. Thus fresh living shells wandering here is a strong possibility. As this hotel was used for satanic rituals, there is also a possibility that  a knowledgeable and authentic Tantrik may have either stayed here or used his powers to control the living shells. Though the deaths occurred here were all unnatural, it is not possible to predict the yoni acquired by the souls after death, as it depends on many other parameters. Taking into account the personal reasons of the victims and the events just before death, I feel there is a higher possibility of ritualistic events causing such weird things. 

Overall, some events can be deciphered using logical explanation. While it becomes nearly impossible to comprehend a few of them due to more sinister reasons like hiding the evidence, purposely doctoring the evidence and even not reporting the cases. Well, once the hotel was famous for it's notoriety, it is also possible that a few events were wrongly reported or exaggerated for the financial gains. Taking all these points into consideration, the readers can decide if the theory holds any water. This article is only written to provide the information about the strange history of the Hotel Cecil. 

Today the hotel has rebranded itself to 'Stay on Main'. It has totally changed its appearance. With new renovations, new management has tried to shake off it's dark history and reputation for the macabre. Nevertheless, people can not forget the notoriety of the hotel. Due to many unanswered questions, people still remember the 'Hotel Cecil' rather than 'Stay on Main'.

बाधिक वास्तू (Haunted Houses)

बऱ्याचदा आपण पारलौकिक घटनांबद्दल ऐकतो, वाचतो. अशा कथा ऐकताना आपण त्यावर सहज विश्वासही ठेवतो. त्यात किती तथ्य असतं हा वादाचा मुद्दा आहे. पण आपल्या आयुष्यात कधी ना कधी आपण अशी एक तरी गोष्ट ऐकलेली असते. जुन्या काळातल्या लोकांकडून अशा अनेक गोष्टी सांगितल्या जातात. मग त्यातून गैरसमज, अंधश्रद्धा पसरतात. ह्या पारलौकिक घटनांमधलाच एक भाग म्हणजे 'बाधिक वास्तू'. एखाद्या वास्तूमध्ये काही काळ वा कधी कधी मोठ्या कालावधीत काही त्रास उद्भवतात. तिथे राहणाऱ्या व्यक्तींना चांगले - वाईट पण विचित्र अनुभव येतात. बहुतांशी त्रास हे वास्तू दोष आणि तिथे राहणाऱ्या व्यक्तींच्या कुंडलीनुसार असलेल्या विधिलिखित घटनाच असतात. किंबहुना ती वास्तू 'बाधिक' आहे या पूर्वग्रहामुळेच अनेक गोष्टींचं कारण हे पारलौकिक आहे असं मानलं जातं जे मानसिक दुर्बलतेमुळे घडतं. माझ्या अभ्यासानुसार कोणतंही वैज्ञानिक, ज्योतिष शास्त्रीय कारण नसताना जर विचित्र अनुभव येत असतील तर ती वास्तू 'बाधिक' आहे असं म्हणता येईल. व्यावहारीक गोष्टी, ज्योतिष शास्त्र या  दृष्टिकोनातून वा आपल्या कर्मांचा विचार न केल्यामुळे त्या वास्तूत जी फळं मिळतात त्याचं उत्तर बऱ्याच लोकांना काढता येत नाही. मग अशा घटनांना 'पारलौकिक घटना' असं सोपं नाव दिलं जातं. कारण पारलौकिक घटना घडल्या आहेत अथवा नाहीत हे दोन्ही मुद्दे सिद्ध करणं कठीण आहे. एकतर यावर कोणत्याही अभ्यासकांचं एकमत होत नाही. तसंच पारलौकिक घटना सिद्ध करताना नेहमीच्या कसोट्या लावता येत नाहीत. त्यामुळे त्या जागेत राहणाऱ्या आणि आधीच त्रासलेल्या लोकांचा पारलौकिक घटनांवर विश्वास पटकन बसतो. हे जरी खरं धरलं तरी यात आणखीही एक मुद्दा येतो. एखाद्या वास्तूत जेव्हा खरोखर पारलौकिक घटना घडतात तेव्हा त्या जागेसंबंधी असण्यापेक्षा त्या जागेत असणाऱ्या एखाद्या व्यक्तीच्या संदर्भात असू शकतात. वैयक्तिक दृष्टीनं पाहायला गेलं तर एखाद्या व्यक्तीला असे काही त्रास होऊ शकतात. पण केवळ त्या वास्तूत असताना ते घडल्यामुळे ती संपूर्ण वास्तूच बाधिक आहे असं म्हटलं जातं. याची शहानिशा करणं खूप गरजेचं असतं. कारण अशी व्यक्ती त्या वास्तूतून बाहेर पडली तर अशा विचित्र घटना घडत नाहीत, पण केवळ बदनामीमुळे नंतरच्या काही घटनांचं खापरही त्या वास्तूवर फोडलं जातं. कोणत्याही अंधश्रद्धेच्या वा भावनांच्या आहारी न जाता याचं निदान केलं जावं असं माझं मत आहे. अनेक वर्षांपूर्वी घडलेल्या कथित वा सद्य स्थितीतील परोक्ष घटनांपेक्षा अपरोक्ष घटना, पुरावे अशा सर्व मुद्द्यांचा सारासार विचार करूनच कोणत्याही निर्णयाप्रत यावं.   

आता वास्तू 'बाधिक' असणं म्हणजे नक्की काय? भारतीय वास्तू शास्त्रानुसार वास्तू कधीच बाधिक नसते. अशी कोणतीही गोष्ट आपल्या शास्त्राने मान्य केलेली नाही. वास्तू शास्त्रानुसार जागेत दिशादोष (मुख्यतः दक्षिण), आपली कर्मं, मानसिक अवस्था, कुंडलीतील दोष, मृतात्म्यांचा एखाद्या व्यक्तीच्या मनावर ताबा असणं अशा गोष्टींमुळे राहणाऱ्या व्यक्तींना त्रास होतात. पण जागा 'बाधिक' होणं अशक्य आहे. बहुतांशी हे सत्य असलं तरीही संशोधनात कोणतीही शक्यता नाकारता येत नाही. त्यामुळे अज्ञात गोष्टींना पूर्णपणे मी नाकारत नसल्यानं हे शास्त्र भविष्यात वास्तू बाधिक होते असं सिद्ध करणारच नाही असा माझा दृष्टिकोन नाही. असो, याबद्दल अनेक मत मतांतरं आहेत. माझ्या अभ्यासानुसार आणि अनुभवांनुसार माझी जी मतं आहेत ती मी इथे मांडायचा प्रयत्न करत आहे. त्याच्याशी सगळेच सहमत होतील असं नाही याची मला जाणीव आहे.          

आता सोप्या शब्दांत सांगायचं तर वास्तूला बाधा होणं म्हणजे एखाद्या वास्तूत जेव्हा निरनिराळ्या योनितील अतृप्त आत्म्यांचा वावर असून त्यांच्या मार्फत त्या जागेतील व्यक्तींना मानसिक क्लेश होतात आणि त्याचं पर्यवसान शारीरिक क्लेश वा भौतिक घडामोडींवर होतं. काही वेळा हे नैसर्गिकरित्या घडतं, तर काही वेळा सिद्धीप्राप्त तांत्रिक हे घडवून आणतात. शक्यतो हे आत्मे त्या वास्तूच्या बाहेर आपला प्रभाव दाखवू शकत नाहीत. त्यामुळे ती वास्तू त्यांच्या बंधनात अडकते आणि त्या वास्तूला त्यांची बाधा होते, म्हणजेच ती वास्तू अप्रत्यक्षरीत्या 'बाधिक' होते. या पारलौकिक शास्त्राला इतके कांगोरे आहेत कि त्याचा अभ्यास असलेली व्यक्तीच याचं योग्य निदान करू शकते. त्या अतृप्त आत्म्याची (योनि) शक्ती किती आहे, नक्की कोणत्या कारणासाठी तो अतृप्त आहे, किती काळापूर्वी त्याचा मृत्यू झाला आहे आणि कसा झाला आहे, एकाच आत्म्याचा वावर आहे कि जास्त अशा अनेक गोष्टींवर होणारा त्रास अवलंबून असतो. एखाद्या मृतात्म्याचा वावर एखाद्या योनित किती काळ असतो यालाही काही मर्यादा असतात. त्यामुळे असे काही वावर असतील तर त्या आत्म्याचं देहावसान फार पूर्वी झालेलं नसणार. ज्या वेळी काही शेकडो वा हजारो वर्षांपूर्वी मरण पावलेल्या व्यक्तींची नावं अशा बाबतीत घेतली जातात ते मला पटत नाही. पण नुकत्याच मरण पावलेल्या व्यक्तींच्या मृतात्म्याबद्दल एखाद्या जागेत राहून काही त्रास देणं शक्य आहे. मग त्यासाठी त्या जागेत असणाऱ्या एखाद्या कमकुवत मनाच्या व्यक्तीच्या मनाचा ताबा घेणं हा सर्वात जास्त अनुभवलेला प्रकार असतो. तसंच जिवंतपणी त्या व्यक्तीच्या भावना किती तीव्र होत्या आणि आताची योनि कोणती यावरही सर्व फळं अवलंबून असतात. मृतात्मा जेव्हा अशा अवस्थेत असतो तेव्हा त्याला स्वतःला काहीही करता येत नाही. त्यामुळे अशा विचित्र अनुभवांच्या वेळी जागेवर ताबा असतो म्हणजे बऱ्याचदा त्या जागेत राहणाऱ्या व्यक्तींना विचित्र अनुभव येतात, त्यांच्या हातून काही गोष्टी घडतात. बऱ्याचदा अशा ठिकाणी राहणाऱ्या व्यक्तींना वाईट स्वप्न पडतात किंवा मृतात्मा त्यांना स्वप्नात दिसतो. अशा व्यक्ती त्या मृतात्म्याला जिवंतपणी ओळखतही नसतात. पण निद्रावस्थेत असताना जिवंत व्यक्तीच्या मनाचा ताबा घेणं तुलनात्मकरित्या सोपं असतं. या बाबतीतला विशेष अनुभव म्हणजे जेव्हा कोणी पोटावर वळून झोपतं तेव्हा अशी स्वप्नं जास्त पडतात. पण एरवीसुद्दा वैज्ञानिक दृष्ट्या विचार केला तरी पोटावर वजन पडेल असं झोपलं तर वाईट स्वप्नं पडतात कारण त्यामुळे पचनक्रियेत अडथळे येतात. त्यामुळे कोणत्याही अशा पारलौकिक अनुभवांच्या वेळी सगळ्या शक्यता पडताळून पाहाव्यात. 

मनुष्य मरण पावल्यावर जी पहिली अवस्था असते त्यातली एक म्हणजे 'वासनाशव'. एखाद्या मनुष्याचा किंवा प्राण्याचा मृत्यू झाला तरीही त्याच्या मेंदूच्या भागात 'धुगधुगी' असते हे आपणही पाहतो. हि धुगधुगी म्हणजेच चेतना एक ऊर्जा असते जी जिवंतपणी त्या मनुष्य / प्राण्याची जीवनउर्जा असते. पण मृत्यूनंतर ती एका क्षणात संपत नाही. उदाहरण द्यायचं तर मनुष्याचं शीर धडावेगळं केलं तरी किमान १५ सेकंद आपल्या आवती भोवती काय चाललंय हे त्याच्या मेंदूला समजतं. अशीच चेतना मृतात्म्यातही असते. जेव्हा ही चेतना जास्त असते तेव्हा मृतात्मा 'जिवंत वासनाशाव' होतो. पण अशी चेतना अत्यंत कमी किंवा जवळपास नसतेच तेव्हा तो मृतात्मा 'मृत वासनाशाव' असतो. ही चेतना प्रामुख्यानं मेंदूत असते. मी वरती वर्णन केलेले अनुभव येणं, एखाद्याच्या मनाचा ताबा घेणं ह्या गोष्टी जिवंत वासनाशवांकडून होतात. कारण तेव्हढी चेतना त्यांच्यात बाकी असते जी त्यांना उद्युक्त करते. यालाच संचार म्हणतात. मृत वासनाशवांकडून झालेले त्रास अजून तरी सिद्ध झालेले नाहीत. काही वेळा देवतांचे गण मनुष्य मनाचा ताबा घेतात आणि माणसाला दुष्कृत्य करायला भाग पाडतात. याला 'गणसंचार' म्हणतात. पण ही फार दुर्मिळ गोष्ट आहे. काही वेळा दुष्ट व्यक्ती, तांत्रिक अशांचे मृत्यू झाल्यावर त्यांना पिशाच्च योनि मिळते. याचेही संचार असतात ज्यांना 'पिशाच्चसंचार' म्हणतात. पिशाच्च ही शवभक्षक राक्षसी योनि असून नुकत्याच मरण पावलेल्या वासनाशवातील ऊर्जा पोषक द्रव्यासारखी वापरून ते आपली ऊर्जा वाढवतात.                       

काही लोकांचा गैरसमज असतो कि वास्तू बाधिक आहे म्हणजे ती संपूर्ण जागा / एखादी खोली / एखादा भाग / दरवाजा अशा गोष्टींवर मृतात्म्याचा 'कब्जा' असतो. कब्जा असणं म्हणजे त्या ठिकाणावर मृतात्मे सर्पासारखे वेटोळं घालून बसतात आणि कोणी तिथे गेलं तर ते त्रास देतात असंच काही लोकांना वाटतं. पण सत्य तसं नसतं. मृतात्मे तिथे वावर जरूर करतात पण कोणतीही वस्तू घट्ट धरून बसत नाहीत. एखाद्या व्यक्तीची जिवंतपणी ती आवडती जागा असते, त्या जागेसंबंधी काही तीव्र भावना असतात त्यामुळे एखाद्या विशिष्ट ठिकाणाविषयी त्या खूप आक्रमक असतात. मृत्यूनंतर जी अवस्था असते त्यात प्रत्यक्ष काही करता येत नसल्यानं त्या आणखी आक्रमक होऊन दुसरा काही मार्ग नसल्यानं असे काही संकेत देतात, जेणेकरून त्या जागी दुसरं कोणी असलेलं त्यांना आवडलेलं नाही हे दर्शवता येईल. अर्थात त्या जागी त्यांच्याबाबतीत पूर्वी काही वाईट घडलं असेल तर त्यांना याचा संकेतही द्यायचा असतो किंवा त्यांच्यावर जिवंतपणी ज्यांनी अन्याय केला आहे अशा व्यक्ती तिथे आल्या तर मृतात्मे तीव्र भावना व्यक्त करायचा प्रयत्न करतात. पण ह्या सगळ्याला भौतिक जगात खूप मर्यादा असतात.

काही लोकांच्या अनुभवानुसार अशा जागेत त्यांना मृतात्मे 'दिसतात'. म्हणजेच एखादी पांढरी झालर ज्याला मनुष्याचा आकार असू शकतो वगैरे. ही जिवंत वासनाशवं असतात ज्यांना कधीकधी पिशाच्च योनि प्राप्त होते तर कधी इतर कोणती योनि मिळते. पण ही वासनाशवं त्यांच्यात चेतना असल्यानं इकडून तिकडे फिरत असतात आणि कधी कधी दर्शन देतात. रसायनशास्त्र, किमयाशास्त्र आणि पारलौकिक शास्त्र  (पैशाचिक) अशा शास्त्रांत यांचा अभ्यास होतो. बऱ्याचदा असं काही 'दिसलं' तर इतर लोक त्या व्यक्तीला मानसिक रुग्ण ठरवतात. पण अनेक कारणांमुळे असं 'दिसणं' शक्य आहे. याचा संपूर्ण अभ्यास केला जायला हवा. हि दिसणारी वासनाशवं किती त्रासदायक आहेत हे अनेक गोष्टींवर अवलंबून असतं ज्याबद्दल इथे सखोल माहिती देणं शक्य नाही. 

असो, हा विषय इतका सखोल आहे कि एका लेखात सर्व माहिती देणं शक्य नाही. पण ठळक मुद्दे मी इथे मांडण्याचा प्रयत्न केला आहे. कोणताही मृतात्मा प्रत्यक्षात काही करू शकत नसल्यानं जी चुकीची माहिती पसरवली जाते त्याला बळी पडू नये. एखादं यंत्र (गॅजेट), कॅमेरा अशा कोणत्याही यंत्रात यांचे फोटो वा व्हिडिओ घेणं (सध्यातरी) अशक्य आहे. प्लँचेट सारखी पद्धत अवलंबताना शेकडो वा हजारो वर्षांपूर्वी मृत झालेल्या व्यक्तीला 'बोलावणं' अशक्य आहे. एखाद्या शिकलेल्या व्यक्तीनं अभ्यास करताना मृतात्म्याला त्याच्या मनाचा ताबा घ्यायला परवानगी देऊन एखादी माहिती घेणं शक्य आहे. पण अशा शिकलेल्या व्यक्तींना 'माध्यम' म्हणतात. पूर्ण मार्गदर्शन घेतल्याशिवाय असे प्रयोग करू नयेत. अनिच्छेने कोणी माध्यम झालंच तर ते कमकुवत मानाचं लक्षण असल्यानं कोणत्याही अंधश्रद्धेच्या आहारी न जाता मानसिक बल वाढवावं. त्यामुळे अशा गोष्टींतून सहज सुटका होते. काही पारलौकिक शास्त्रातले वा ज्योतिष शास्त्रातले उपाय यासाठी आहेत पण कोणत्याही शास्त्राच्या खूप आहारी जाऊन घाबरून जाऊ नये. मृतात्म्यांच्या अवस्थांना काळाची मर्यादा असते त्यामुळे कोणी आपल्या खूप आधीच्या पिढीतील व्यक्तींबद्दल काही सांगून घाबरवण्याचा प्रयत्न केला तर त्यावर विश्वास ठेवू नये. श्रद्धा जरूर असावी पण अंधश्रद्धा नसावी. 

एकूण आकडेवारी पाहिली तर पारलौकिक घटनांमध्ये २ ते ५ % तथ्य असतं. बाकी निव्वळ गैरसमज, अंधश्रद्धा, मानसिक दौर्बल्य आणि भीती असते हे माझं स्पष्ट मत आहे.  

ह्या विषयाचा अभ्यास करताना अनेक 'बाधिक' जागांबद्दल माहिती मिळाली. भारताबद्दल बोलायचं तर राजस्थान, दिल्ली, पुणे येथील किल्ले / वाडे (भांगरा किल्ला, शनिवारवाडा इ.), मुंबई / ठाणे येथील काही भाग, हैदराबाद येथील रामोजी फिल्म सिटी, अमेरिकेचे व्हाईट हाऊस जिथे अब्राहम लिंकन यांनाही भास होत असत आणि आजही लिंकन यांचा आत्मा तिथे वावरतो असं म्हणतात, जगभरातील अनेक हॉटेलं, युद्धाची ठिकाणं, छळछावण्या, इस्पितळं, जुनी घरं अशा एक ना अनेक वास्तू बाधिक आहेत असं सांगणारे ठामपणे सांगतात. ह्यात तथ्य किती आणि आर्थिक फायद्यासाठी केलेली प्रसिद्धी किती हे वाचकांनी ठरवावं. अशाच एका बाधिक वास्तूबद्दल पुढील लेखात काही माहिती देण्याचा प्रयत्न करणार आहे. 

टीप: कोणतीही अंधश्रद्धा पसरवण्याचा माझा हेतू नाही. उलटपक्षी अंधश्रद्धा दूर होण्यासाठी मी हि माहिती देत आहे. जो श्रद्धेचा भाग आहे आणि सुसंगत आहे तेव्हढाच मी मान्य केला आहे. त्यामुळे कृपया कोणत्याही प्रकारचे गैरसमज व अंधश्रद्धा यांना मी स्थान देत नाही आणि देणार नाही याची नोंद घ्यावी.

The stories of paranormal incidents have become a staple of every culture. Many times we blindly believe such stories quite easily. Whether they are real or fake is a matter of debate. But in our life at least once we have been told such stories. Elderly people have a collection of such tales. Well, many times it only helps to spread misunderstandings or superstitions. One large genre of these tales of paranormal incidents includes the 'haunted houses'. Many people experience some weird things or 'supernaturals' at some locations either for a short period of time or even for years together. Though these experiences can be good or bad, they are testified as 'weird'. Mostly such experiences occur due to flaws in the characteristics of the elements related to the house / place (Vastu dosha) or due to the destined issues in the kundlis of one of the (or more) people staying at that place (Vidhilikhit). In fact the prejudice against the 'haunted' place makes people think irrationally about the incidences occurring there and makes them mentally more and more vulnerable. I feel in such cases we need a great deal of investigation and if no scientific or astrological or logical explanation can decipher the events, then it can be stated that the place is 'haunted'. Many times people are not able to comprehend the effects of the karmas / deeds in the past or relate life with practical or astrological issues. Due to this the otherwise destined events in life are simply labelled as 'paranormal experiences'. In the main such allegations are common because it is really byzantine to prove either way i.e. whether supernaturals exist or do not exist. Firstly there is no complete unanimity on the study of supernaturals. Secondly it is not possible to 'prove' these events as paranormal by using normal criteria. So the victims who are already troubled tend to easily believe the allegations of paranormal events. Even if this affirmation is accepted per se, it has one more point at issue. When such paranormal activities occur actually they could be related to the possession of a person by some entities rather than the haunting of that place. Individually a person can be possessed by some entities or ghosts in common terms. Coincidentally when such a possessed person experiences the effects while staying at a particular place, that place is wrongly assumed as haunted. A detailed fact - finding is necessary in such cases. Because usually such weird events do not occur after the possessed person leaves the place, but due to the strong prejudice the defamed place is blamed for any tragedy or even destined problems by the residents in future. In my opinion such experiences should be thoroughly investigated without getting into the clutches of superstitions or emotions. Rather than blindly accepting the professed avouches or so called proofs one should consider the witnessed events and logical evidences to come to any conclusion.    

Now what really happens when a house or a place becomes 'haunted'? Well, Indian Vastu Shastra has not accepted the concept of haunting of a place. According to the ancient Indian texts, calling a place haunted is nothing but a stereotypical viewpoint. Though this theory is plausible and widely accepted, I can not deny any other possibility which can emerge in research works in future. I do agree that there are many unexplored things in the world, so from my point of view it can be proved in the future that a place can get haunted. Anyway there is a lack of agreement among the scholars on this point. Here I am trying to present my opinions on this topic based on my study and observations. I understand that every reader might not agree to my views. 

In simple words, a place is haunted when some insatiable entities (souls) from various yonis exist at the place and create mental issues to the people staying there, which results in some 'weird' events in their materialistic life. Sometimes it happens naturally and sometimes expert Tantriks control these souls and procure various activities. Possibly these entities can not show their powers beyond the vicinity of the property. Thus the place comes under the control of these souls and (indirectly) gets 'haunted'. Paranormal science is such a vast science that only a fully knowledgeable person can verify the situation. The difficulties resulting due to haunting of a place depend on many parameters like the yoni (power) of the soul, reason behind discontent, the reason and way of death, time passed after death, there is one soul existing or more etc. There is a time limit to every stage of progress for the souls. Thus if any such entity is existing it is obvious that the person has died in the recent past. I don't agree with the averments that the ancestors or unrelated people who died hundreds or thousands of years back are haunting the place. It is possible though that the soul of a recently died person can create some troubles. In such cases the soul can take full control of a person with a weaker mind (possession), which is the most common type of haunting. The point to be noted is all the powers of the soul depend on the intensity of the emotions when the person was alive and the acquired yoni at that stage. When the soul is in the stage of any yoni, it can not 'perform' or do any acts interfering with the mundane life of others. Thus when a place is haunted it is mostly due to the mental possession of the weak minded person or aggressive behaviour of that person resulting in catastrophic events. Some victims bear evidences of having weird dreams or seeing a particular spirit in their dreams when they sleep in allegedly haunted places. They claim that they don't know the person in their dreams in real life. The main reason behind this is it is easier to capture one's subconscious mind when the person is in deep sleep. Well it also works the other way round. When a normal person in a normal place sleeps with legs curled towards torsos (side sleepers) gets weird dreams due to obstacles in the digestive process. So it is very important to analyse all the factors before jumping onto any conclusion regarding paranormal events.  

In the life after death one of the first stages acquired by the human soul is the 'shell'. When a human being or an animal dies, there lies a meager energy, especially in the part of the brain. This is the remnant of the driving force (energy) of life i.e. consciousness. But it doesn't vanish completely after death. For example when a human being is beheaded the brain still refuses to die for at least 15 seconds and can understand what is happening around. Similar energy is present in the shells of the deads in the afterlife. When this energy is significant the shell becomes a 'living shell'. But when negligible or almost none of this energy remains the shell becomes a 'dead shell'. This energy exists in the brain of any animal or human being. The possession of a living person's mind or weird experiences etc which I mentioned above are all due to living shells. Because the energy in the shells can drive them. This is the basic concept of 'possession' (sanchar). It is still not proved that such things can be done by dead shells. Sometimes the Ganas ( a certain group of souls who have become close to a deity by pure devotion) of the deities possess the mind of a weaker person and create similar troubles. This is known as the possession by Ganas (Ganasanchar).  Well this happens rarely though. Mostly wicked people, Tantriks enter the yoni of Pishach i.e. Ghost, one of the demonic spirits. Their possessions are common and are known as Ghost possessions (Pishachsanchar). Pishach is a yoni of demonic spirits which ghoul - like feeds upon the waning vital substance which lingers on in the newly dead. 

There is a widespread misunderstanding that if a place / house is haunted it means it's some part / room/ door/ complete house is possessed by the demonic spirits. They wrongly interpret the term possession as presence of these ghoul like spirits on the place just like coiled snakes and attack anyone who enters that place. But this is not the reality. The souls do wander at such places due to various reasons but do not catch hold of or capture any solid material. These souls become aggressive at certain places which was their favourite place when they were alive or they have some strong memories about that place (not necessarily the complete house). In the afterlife the souls can't act or perform anything as such, so they become more aggressive and try to express themselves in indirect ways. Sometimes it merely shows their unwillingness for the presence of others in 'their' favourite places. Of course sometimes they also try to give a hint about the injustice that occurred at the place or when the tyrant happens to be at that place they become more aggressive due to the victimization in the past. But expressing all these emotions to the people from the mundane world is not an easy task for the souls as there are limitations of the boundaries between the two 'worlds'.  

According to some victims they have 'seen' the ghosts or evil spirits. They describe it as a very thin white fimbria with a humanoid shape. These are mostly living shells which sometimes get the Pishach yoni or sometimes any other yoni. As these living shells have a bit of vitality or energy they aimlessly wander here and there. Sometimes they pay a visit and are visible to some people and sometimes they just go unnoticed. Many scientists from Chemistry, Alchemy and paranormal sciences (including science of spirits) are diligently researching this topic. Most of the times when people claim to have 'seen' the spirits they are considered as psychologically disturbed. But it is quite possible to 'see' the spirits in the physical world. This subject should be studied in detail. These visible shells do have some powers but it is impossible to give all the information here.   

Well, this topic is so vast that it is not possible to mention every detail in a single article. I have tried to mention the important points here. As I mentioned earlier no soul can 'perform' any act by its own in this mundane world, so I request the readers not to fall prey to any rumours or wrong information spread about the acts of a spirit without proper information. It is not possible (at least today) to film or take a photograph of these spirits by any gadget. In methods like planchet it is not possible to invite the soul of a person who has died hundreds or thousands years back. A trained research student can allow the spirits to capture his mind (possess) and get some information using his skills. Such a person is known as a 'medium'. But such experiments should be strictly performed under proper guidance. If unwillingly a person becomes a medium i.e. gets possessed, then it is a sign of a weak mind. In such cases one should become mentally strong rather than falling victim to the superstitions. This will help to easily get rid of the troubles. There are some remedies in paranormal sciences or astrology, but one should not get scared and follow the remedies blindly. The stages in the progress of the souls have time limits, so one  should not believe about the presence of the spirits of their ancestors who have died many years or decades back. We should have faith in this science but we should avoid superstitions or ostentation. 

The statistics of these paranormal events suggests that only 2 to 5% claims are real. I frankly opine that the others are mere misunderstandings, superstitions, mental weakness and fears. 

While studying the 'haunted houses' I learnt about many places around the world which are (allegedly) haunted. Talking about India there are many haunted places (and forts) in cities / states like Rajasthan, Delhi, Mumbai, Thane, Pune (Bhangrah fort, Shaniwar wada etc), Ramoji Film city in Hyderabad etc. In the USA the White House is supposed to be haunted and even president Abraham Lincoln claimed to have experienced supernaturals. After his assassination a few presidents and staff of the White house have claimed to have seen Lincon's soul in the office or his room. Numerous hotels, hospitals, old palaces / mansions, torture chambers, war places around the world are 'haunted' according to many people. Now its up to the readers to judge whether these claims are real or fake, created just for the financial gains. I will put my thoughts on one of the famous haunted places, in my next article.

जॅनिस जॉप्लिन एक झंझावात..2 (Fast and furious.. Janis Joplin-2)

मी मागील लेखात सांगितल्याप्रमाणे जॅनिस जॉप्लिनच्या कुंडलीवरून काही मुद्दे मांडण्याचा इथे प्रयत्न करणार आहे. वयाच्या अवघ्या २७ व्या वर्षी या वादळी व्यक्तिमत्त्वानं जगाचा निरोप घेतला. तरी एवढ्या लहान वयातही तिनं सारं काही मिळवलं. यश, पैसा, प्रसिद्धी, व्यसनं, शरीरसुख कोणत्याही बाबतीत काही मिळवायचं राहिलं आहे, असं झालं नाही. म्हणूनच तिच्या कुंडलीवरून आपल्याला बरंच काही शिकता येईल असं मला वाटतं.  

जॅनिसची कुंडली पुढीलप्रमाणे आहे: 

 

जॅनिसच्या कुंडलीत लग्नी कुंभ ही शनिची रास आहे. लग्नेश शनि चतुर्थस्थानी हर्षल बरोबर आहे. जॅनिसच्या बालपणाचा विचार करायचा तर लग्नेश शनि आणि चंद्र दोन्ही ग्रह शुभ स्थितीत आहेत. चंद्र मिथुन राशीत पंचमात असल्यानं तिला बालपणी त्रास, संघर्ष असं काही करावं लागलं नाही. वडिलांचा कारक रवि व्ययात शुभ स्थितीत आहे. तो शुक्र आणि बुधाबरोबर असल्यामुळे तिच्यावर तिच्या वडिलांचा खूप प्रभाव होता. तिला संगीत क्षेत्रात येण्यासाठी वडिलांनी खूप पाठिंबाही दिला. आई - वडील दोघांचं प्रेम आणि पाठिंबा यामुळे ती स्वतःला या क्षेत्रात आणू शकली. उलटपक्षी नाव मिळाल्यावर तिलाच एक मुलगी म्हणून चांगलं वागता आलं नाही याची तिला खंत होती. एकदा तिच्या कुटुंबाला लिहिलेल्या पात्रात तिनं म्हटलं होतं " मी कमकुवतपणे का होईना पण कुटुंबात अतिशय वाईट वागल्याची क्षमा मागत आहे."         

तिच्या कुंडलीत शुक्राच्या राशीत शनि आणि हर्षल असल्यानं तिला अनपेक्षितरीत्या यश मिळालं. तिला स्वतःलाही याची कल्पना नव्हती असं ती सांगत असे. शनि हा परीक्षा पाहणारा ग्रह आहे. अनेक लोक शनिला पापग्रह म्हणून घाबरतात. पण शनि किती उच्च कोटीचं यश देतो याचं हे उत्तम उदाहरण आहे. ह्या शनि हर्षल जोडीची पूर्ण दृष्टी दशम म्हणजे कर्मस्थानावर असल्यानं हे अनपेक्षित यश मिळालं पण त्यामुळे बदनामीनं तिची पाठ काही सोडली नाही. मुख्यतः मनमुक्त वागणं आणि समाजाच्या चौकटीत अडकलेल्यांच्या दृष्टीनं बोलायचं तर 'बिघडल्यामुळे' तिची खूप बदनामी झाली. पण हा शनि लग्नेश आणि व्ययेश असल्यानं तिला कीर्ती आणि पैसा ह्या दोन्ही गोष्टींची फळं फार लवकर मिळाली. रोहिणी नक्षत्रातला हा शनि तिच्यासाठी खूप शुभ ठरला. कलेचा कारक शुक्र आणि पंचमेश बुध हे दोन्ही ग्रह कला क्षेत्रासाठी फार महत्त्वाचे आहेत. हे दोन्ही ग्रह एकत्र व्ययस्थानात आहेत. त्यामुळे तिची कीर्ती देशोदेशी पसरली. बुध ग्रह इथे फार महत्त्वाच्या भूमिकेत आपल्याला दिसतो. तो वाणीचा कारक असल्यानं तिचा वेगळ्या जातकुळीतला आवाज, संगीत सादर करण्याची कला आणि मुक्तपणा यामुळे तिनं तुफान यश मिळवलं. अनेक देशांत तिचं नाव गाजलं. मात्र दशमस्थानी असलेल्या वृश्चिक राशीमुळे तिची अनेक ठिकाणी वादावादी झाली. मंगळ हा तीव्र ग्रह इथे दशमेश असून तो लाभस्थानी गुरूच्या धनू राशीत आहे. त्यामुळे मिळालेल्या लाभात तिला अनेकदा वाद आणि स्पष्टवक्तेपणामुळे थोडं नुकसान सहन करावं लागलं. धनेश गुरू चंद्राबरोबर पंचमात आणि पंचमेश बुध शुक्राबरोबर व्ययस्थानी ह्या मुख्य योगांमुळे तिला प्रचंड यश मिळालं. आर्थिक बाबतीतही ती समाधानी होती. तिच्या संगीत क्षेत्रातील कारकिर्दीबद्दल बोलायचं तर जागा अपुरी पडेल. गोऱ्या समाजातील इतर कलाकारांप्रमाणे नेहमीची वाट न धरता तिनं Blues (ब्लूज) ह्या लोकसंगीताची वाट धरली. कृष्णवर्णीयांची कला अशी समाजात प्रतिमा असतानाही तिनं ह्याच संगीत प्रकारात नाव मिळवलं. आणि अमेरिकेची पहिली रॉकस्टार बनण्याचा सन्मानही प्राप्त केला.         

तिच्या कुंडलीत मंगळाची पंचम स्थानावर पूर्ण दृष्टी आहे. कलेच्या ह्या स्थानावर जिथे चंद्रही आहे तिथे मंगळाची पूर्ण दृष्टी असल्यानं तिची कारकीर्द वादग्रस्तच राहिली. पंचम आणि सप्तम स्थानाचा मिलाफ म्हणजे आयुष्यातील प्रेमप्रसंग आणि विवाह याबाबतीत मिळणारी फलप्राप्ती. गुरू ज्या स्थानी असतो त्या स्थानाचा नाश करतो असं म्हणतात. पंचमातील ह्या गुरूनं आपल्या ५, ७, आणि ९ व्या दृष्टीनुसार तिला लाभ, भाग्य आणि निर्मळ स्वभावाचं फळ जरूर दिलं. पण सप्तमातील राहू आणि पंचमातील गुरू - चंद्र यांचा एकत्रित विचार केला तर तिला प्रेमप्रसंगात स्थैर्य असं लाभलंच नाही. अर्थात ह्याला तिचा चंचल स्वभाव, अनेक लोकांशी असलेले शारीरिक संबंध हे सारं कारणीभूत आहे. पण मिथुन राशीतल्या चंद्राचा विचार केला तर हे सारं काही फार अनपेक्षित नव्हतं. एका जागी निवांत होऊन रमणारा हा जीवच नव्हता. अत्यंत वेगवान आयुष्य जगताना ह्या speed freak असलेल्या मुलीनं एक मोठा थांबा घेऊन आपला प्रवास खंडित करावा हे घडणारं नव्हतं. तेच तर तिचं वैशिष्ट्य होतं. हा वेगवान प्रवास कुणाला फारसा मानवलाच नाही. त्यामुळे ठराविक साच्यातल्या व्यक्तींना ज्यांना तिनं आपली 'जीवनसाथी' बनावी ही अपेक्षा होती त्यांचा पूर्णपणे अपेक्षाभंग झाला. षष्ठातील प्लूटो आणि अष्टमातला नेपच्यून ह्यामुळे तिचं सप्तमस्थान पापकर्तरी योगात होतं असं म्हणता येईल. त्यातून सप्तमातला राहू आणि लग्नी असलेला केतू यामुळे वैवाहिक सौख्य तिला मिळालं नाही. तिच्या आई वडिलांनाही तिचा सहवास फार काळ मिळाला असं नाही. पण तिचं त्यांच्यावरचं प्रेम अबाधित राहिलं हे खरं. 

पंचमातल्या ह्या गुरू चंद्रामुळे ती कलाक्षेत्रात येताना एक नाजूक, कल्पनाशक्तीनं रसरसलेलं असं मन घेऊन आली. नितांत सुंदर अशी गाणी तिनं लिहिली आणि सादरही केली. मंगळाची पंचमावर पूर्ण दृष्टी आणि पंचमेश बुध व्ययस्थानी असल्यानं तिनं बोलताना, वागताना वा कला सादर करताना निर्भीडपणे सादर केली. हाच मंगळ तृतीयेशही असल्यानं तिला भीती ठाऊक नव्हती. अत्यंत हिमतीनं तिनं कृष्णवर्णीय लोकांशी मैत्री केली आणि कधीही लपवली नाही. त्या काळात हे एक धैर्याचं काम होतं. सप्तमातल्या राहुमुळे तिच्या खाजगी आयुष्यात वेगळेपण आलं, जी त्या वेळी बंडखोरी होती. तिच्या आयुष्यात कृष्णवर्णीय व्यक्तीही होत्या, स्त्रियाही होत्या आणि पुरुषही. चंद्र, मंगळ आणि राहू या ग्रहांमुळे तिचं संपूर्ण आयुष्य वादग्रस्त राहिलं असं माझं मत आहे.  

जॅनिसच्या कुंडलीतील पंचमातला मिथुन राशीतला चंद्र बरंच काही सांगून जातो. मुख्य म्हणजे तिनं तिच्यावर झालेली टीका कधीही मनाला लावून घेतली नाही. खूप चांगल्या स्थितीत असलेल्या ह्या चंद्रामुळे तिचं मन घट्ट होतं, किंबहुना तिला कोणत्याही गोष्टीनं फरक पडत नसे. कुणासाठी थांबणं वा रडत राहणं तिला ठाऊक नव्हतं. गुरू चंद्र एकत्र असल्यानं एक नक्की सांगता येईल कि ह्या मनस्विनीचं मन अतिशय निर्मळ आणि शुद्ध होतं. मुद्दाम प्रवाहाच्या विरोधात जाणं, कुणाला दुखावणं हा तिचा हेतू नव्हता. गुरूनं तिच्या मनाला एक पावित्र्य दिलं होतं. तिच्या बेफाम वागण्यानं ज्यांना त्रास झाला असेल ते ठराविक साच्यातील विचार करणारे असावेत. जॅनिस अशा लोकांना कधी उमगलीच नाही. तिनं जी कला सादर केली ती मनापासून केली आणि म्हणूनच लोकांना ती आवडली. लग्नेश शनि असूनही ती कधीही निराश झाली नाही. कायम चांगला विचार करून ती आपल्या मार्गानं पुढे जात राहिली. शनिची कोणतीही दृष्टी चंद्रावर नसल्यानं ती कायम प्रसन्न, हसतमुख असायची. मात्र मंगळाची चंद्रावर जी दृष्टी होती त्यामुळे तिचं वागणं कधी कधी अगोचरपणाचं होत असे. स्टेजवर वा बाहेर किंचाळणं, दुकानात चोरी करणं अशा काही गोष्टी तिच्याकडून घडल्या. अर्थात याला तिचं गर्दचं व्यसन कारण असेलही, कारण गर्दच्या अंमलाखाली असताना तिला भान राहिलं नसणार हे उघडच आहे. 

व्ययातले बुध, शुक्र हे तिच्या विलासी आयुष्यासाठी कारण असणारे ग्रह आहेत. सर्वसाधारण फलप्राप्ती पाहता व्ययात जर बुध आणि शुक्र असेल तर व्यक्ती विलासी, व्यसनी होते. अनेकदा ह्यामुळे आर्थिक अडचण भासते पण जॅनिस आर्थिक अडचणीत कधी सापडली नाही. पण व्ययातील ग्रहांमुळे तिची अटक, व्यसनामुळे मृत्यू ह्या गोष्टी काही टाळता आल्या नाहीत. मृत्यूचा कारक मानला गेलेला शनि तिच्या कुंडलीत चतुर्थ स्थानी आहे. शानिच्याच महादशेत रवि अंतर्दशेत तिचा मृत्यू ओढवला. व्ययस्थानी रवि असल्यानं व्यसनामुळे तिचा मृत्यू झाला. अष्टमेश बुध तिच्या कुंडलीत रवि बरोबरच आहे. त्यामुळे तिचा मृत्यू घरी न होता एका हॉटेलच्या तिच्या खोलीवर झाला. 

असो, काहीही असलं तरी ती एक प्रतिभावान कलाकार होती आणि मुख्य म्हणजे मुक्त आयुष्य जगणारी होती. मुक्तपणाचा खरा अर्थ तिच्या आयुष्यावरून समजतो. कलेला वाहून घेतलेल्या ह्या सरळ मनाच्या मनस्विनीचा मृत्यू मात्र खूप लवकर झाला. जॅनिस आणखी जगली असती, तर संगीतच काय आणखी काही क्षेत्रात तिनं मानसन्मान मिळवले असते आणि अजूनही आपल्याला खूप काही शिकवलं असतं. पण ह्या चिरतरुण, रांगड्या मुलीला आपण म्हातारी झालेलं, थकलेलं पाहूच शकलो नसतो आणि तिलाही असं उत्तरार्धातलं आयुष्य रुचलं नसतं. कदाचित म्हणूनच कि काय परमेश्वरानं तिला ऐन तारुण्यात, कारकीर्दीच्या शिखरावर असताना बोलावून घेतलं. म्हणजे रसिकांच्या मनातली तिची प्रतिमा कायम राहील. तिच्या या अकल्पित जाण्यानं मला पु. ल. देशपांडे यांनी बेळगावच्या 'रावसाहेब' ह्यांच्या मृत्यूनंतर लिहिलेलं एक वाक्य आठवलं "आपली छोटीशी जीवनं समृद्ध करण्यासाठी देवानं दिलेली ही मोलाची देणगी. न मागता दिली होती, न सांगता परत नेली. "

As I have mentioned in my previous article, I am trying to explain the life of Janis Joplin from an astrological point of view. Though this Rockstar with a stormy personality drew her last breath merely at the age of 27, she achieved everything possible in her short life. It was nothing that she could not achieve, may be it success, money, fame, addictions or even sexual satisfaction. That is why I feel that we can learn a lot from her kundli. 

Janis's kundli is as follows:

In her kundli, Aquarius is the ascendant which is ruled by Saturn. The lord of Ascendant Saturn is situated in the fourth house with Uranus. Thus, if we think about her childhood then Saturn and Moon both are placed at a very good position. The Moon situated in the fifth house in Gemini, shows as a child she never had to struggle in her life. Sun which governs her father and paternal side is also placed in a good condition in the twelfth house. As it is also accompanied by Venus and Mercury, this 'Little Blue Girl' was always supported by her father to meet her ambition. In fact she was influenced by her father. The support by her parents really mattered a lot for her and helped her to achieve her goal in life. On the contrary she was driven by a constant need to please her parents. Once she wrote a letter to her family saying " Weak as it is, I apologize for being just so plain bad in the family."

Saturn and Uranus in the sign of Venus in her kundli gave her enormous but unexpected success. Even Janis once mentioned that she was not expecting such huge success in her life. Most people have a bad impression about Saturn as it tests us and pushes us to our limits. But this is the best example of a good Saturn giving unlimited success to the native. Though this pair of Saturn and Uranus is fully aspecting the 10th house i.e. the house of Karma in her kundli, it also stigmatized her to some extent. This stigmata was precisely due to her audacious behaviour which was a kind of 'spoiled' behaviour for the white collar society. As this Saturn is the lord of Ascendant as well as the twelfth house, she achieved fame and money at a very young age. Saturn in the Rohini Nakshatra proved very auspicious for her. Lord of the art Venus and the fifth house lord Mercury are at a very important position for the success in art in her kundli. Both these planets are placed in the twelfth house. This really helped her in achieving success in different countries. Mercury plays a vital role here. As it governs the speech, it gave her tremendous success due to her unique vocal style, presentation and mainly unrestrained behaviour. She successfully performed at many concerts in different countries. The Scorpio sign in her tenth house gave her some negative results though. She had to face confrontations and split from a few bands. The tenth house lord Mars which is a very aggressive planet sits in the 11th house (house of gains) in the sign of Jupiter. This resulted in the loss in her gains in some or the other way due to her straightforward nature. The second house lord (house of money) Jupiter placed in the fifth house along with the Moon and the fifth house lord Mercury along with Venus are the two main yogas which gave her a huge success. These yogas also made her financially accomplished. It is not possible to review her huge success in music in such a small article. She didn't choose the regular path of the then white singers, but went for the music genre Blues. The music form mainly involved African American performers, but Janis chose the genre as her career. Nonetheless, she is considered as the first Rockstar of America. 

In Janis's kundli, Mars is fully aspecting the fifth house. This house representing the art of the native also has Moon situated there, which lead to a controversial career of this Rockstar. The combined results of the fifth and the seventh house are about the love life and marriage of the native. Jupiter spoils the results of the house where it is placed. So, though the Jupiter placed in her fifth house gave favourable results of the houses which it is aspecting i.e. 5, 7 and the 9th house from it which are gains, prosperity and unclouded nature. It proved to be inauspicious for her lovelife. Combined with the Moon in the fifth house and Rahu in the seventh house, Jupiter didn't allow her to settle in a married life.  Of course this was also the result of her fickle nature and infidelity. I feel her transient nature was also not unexpected due to the Moon in the sign like Gemini. She was not from the category of people who really want to 'settle' down at one point of life. This 'speed freak' was not interested in applying a break to her fast life. And that was the speciality of Janis. Her speedy life was not everybody's cup of tea. So the people who loved her but expected her to be their 'life partner' were badly hurt or disappointed. Due to Pluto in the sixth house and Neptune in the eighth house her seventh house (house of marriage) was in a 'Paapkartari yog'. On the top of it Rahu and Ketu in the seventh and first house respectively proved to be malefic for her married life. Even her parents were not blessed by a harmonious cohabitation with Janis. But Janis purely loved her parents. 

The Jupiter - Moon combination in the fifth house granted her a delicate mind with a power of imagination and creativity. She composed and presented many beautiful, everlasting songs. Due to the Mars completely aspecting the fifth house in her kundli and the fifth house lord Mercury placed in the twelfth house, Janis was completely fearless while talking, in behaviour and also in the presentation of her art. As this Mars is also the third house lord, it made her venturous and gutsy. While living in the then racist era compared to today's world, she never feared to show her friendship with the outcasts. It was a perilous behaviour at the time. Rahu in the seventh house also made her personal life controversial. Her lovers included men and women both including some Afro Americans. I clearly feel that the positions of Moon, Rahu and Mars made her whole life turbulent.  

The Moon placed in Gemini in the fifth house in her kundli says a lot. Importantly she never paid attention to the criticism she faced. The favourably positioned Moon made her a strong minded person, in fact there were hardly any things in life which truly affected her in a negative way or stopped her from achieving her goals. She was never a cry baby who would stop her fast life for anybody. I can surely say that the combination of Moon and Jupiter made her a 'pure' human being with a clean and serene mind. She never purposely went against the flow or deliberately hurt anybody. Jupiter gave her a sinless mind. The people who were hurt due to her behaviour were probably from the typical conservative or narrow minded framework. Such people never understood Janis as a person. Janis always presented her art of music with a pure mind and that was the real reason behind her enormous success. Though her ascendant was Saturn, she was never fidgety or unpleasant. She was always focused and went along her chosen path unbiased. As this Saturn never aspected the Moon in her kundli, she was always smiling and pleasant. Although the Mars aspecting the Moon made her a bit inapprehensible. Though this made her behave abrasively like screaming at times or shoplifting. Of course her drug addiction may have affected her behaviour, as due to drug intake people are influenced in such a way that they are not in their senses at times. 

The presence of Mercury and Venus in the twelfth house made her amative. Commonly when Venus and / or Mercury are present in the twelfth house make the native amative or addicted to luxurious life. Many times such planetary position causes financial trouble but luckily Janis was financially very strong. But the planets in the twelfth house could not stop the activities like her addictions or her arrest. The lord of death, Saturn is situated in her fourth house. She died in the mahadasha of Saturn and antardasha of Sun. The Sun placed in the twelfth house caused her death due to addiction i.e. drug overdose and alcoholism. The eighth house lord Mercury is also placed in the twelfth house along with the Sun. So her death occurred in a hotel room away from her home.

Well, considering all these hard facts in her life we can not forget that Janis was a talented artist and mainly a free bird. We can learn the meaning of 'freedom' from her life. This arbitrary persona and a true artist died too young. If Janis were alive today she would have definitely achieved fame in many fields other than music. She would have taught us many things by her deeds. Nevertheless, I feel even we could not have been able to see this evergreen and sturdy persona, being old or tired or done up. Even she would not have accepted such a life. Perhaps, God has taken her away because we should always remember as a young and electric personality. Her sudden demise has shocked the whole world but I remember a comment by a famous author P. L. Deshpande on the demise of the similar personality named 'Ravsaheb' from Belgavi (India). P. L. Deshpande writes of Ravsaheb's death " This was a gift by God to make our small lives bounteous. He gifted us (with such people) without asking and took (them) away without telling."

जॅनिस जॉप्लिन एक झंझावात.. (Fast and furious.. Janis Joplin)

  

अमेरीकेतील वातावरण मुळातच आकर्षक आहे. विशेषतः ज्यांना व्यक्ती स्वातंत्र्याची आवड आहे, त्यांना हा देश आणि इथलं मोकळं ढाकळं वातावरण नेहमीच भुरळ पाडतं. या मोकळेपणामुळे संगीत क्षेत्रातही अनेक क्रान्तिकारक बदल इथे घडले आणि इथल्या जनतेनं ते मनापासून स्वीकारले. वर्णद्वेष, धर्म, जात असल्या राजकारण्यांच्या हातातील खेळण्यापासून कलाक्षेत्र बऱ्यापैकी सुरक्षित राहिलं. सुरुवातीला काही काळ वर्णद्वेष आणि पुरुषी अहंकाराच्या कचाट्यातून कलाक्षेत्राला बाहेर यायला थोडा अवधी जरूर लागला. १८८० मध्ये शिकागो मध्ये संगीत क्षेत्रातील टीकाकार जॉर्ज अप्टन यांनी त्यांच्या 'विमेन इन म्युझिक' या पुस्तकात मत मांडलं होतं कि " स्त्रियांमध्ये जैविक कारणांमुळे उत्तम संगीत बनवण्याची कला नसते." २०व्या शतकाच्या सुरुवातीला रिचर्ड रूबेलीन आणि रिचर्ड बेल यांनी मत व्यक्त केलं कि आपल्या संगीत क्षेत्राच्या इतिहासात स्त्रियांची नावं (कवियत्री) गाळणं हि एक अत्यंत लाजिरवाणी गोष्ट झाली आहे. कारण त्या काळात स्त्रियांना पुरुषांनी लिहिलेली गाणी सादर करता येत होती पण संगीत देणं हे स्त्रियांचं कामच नाही असं म्हणून त्यांना कोणतंही पद वा अधिकार दिला जात नसे. हळूहळू बदल घडत गेले आणि रॉक, जॅझ अशा अनेक संगीत प्रकारात स्त्रियांनी नाव गाजवलं. संपूर्ण स्त्रियांचे असे म्युझिक बँड आले.  

रॉक या संगीत प्रकारानं त्या काळच्या तरुण पिढीला अक्षरशः वेड लावलं. यातलंच एक आग्रगण्य नाव म्हणजे जॅनिस जॉप्लिन. अत्यंत बंडखोर स्वभावाची आणि आपल्या बिनधास्त वागण्यानं तरुणाईच्या गळ्यातील ताईत बनलेली हि गोड गळ्याची हरहुन्नरी कलाकार, नावारूपाला आली नसती तरच नवल. केवळ एक कलाकार म्हणून तिची ओळख करून द्यायला मी हा लेख लिहिलेला नाही, तर खऱ्या अर्थानं व्यक्ती स्वातंत्र्य कसं असावं हे तिच्या आयुष्यावरून शिकता येईल. समाजाच्या चौकटी मोडून आयुष्य झपाट्यानं जगावं हा तिचा बाणा होता, मग भले आयुष्य कमी असलं तरी चालेल. एका स्त्रीनं असं आयुष्य जगणं त्या काळी समाजाला फारसं रुचलं नाही. श्लील अश्लीलतेच्या बंधनात न जगता तिनं आपल्या छोट्या आयुष्यात सारं काही मिळवलं. म्हणूनच तिची कारकीर्द आणि तिच्या कुंडलीचा अभ्यास करून त्यावर माझ्या पद्धतीनं माहिती देण्याचा मी प्रयत्न करत आहे.   

१९ जानेवारी १९४३ रोजी पोर्ट आर्थर, टेक्सस इथे डोरोथी आणि सेथ जॉप्लिन या दाम्पत्याला जॅनिस हे कन्यारत्न झालं. किशोर वयातच काही बहिष्कृत लोकांशी तिची मैत्री झाली. त्यांचा ग्रुप ब्लूज (Blues) ह्या आफ्रिकन अमेरीकन लोकांच्या संगीत प्रकाराचे कार्यक्रम करत होता. त्या मित्र परीवारामुळेच आपण संगीत क्षेत्राकडे वळलो असं जॅनिस आवर्जून सांगत असे. तिनं शाळेत असतानाच ब्लूज आणि लोकसंगीत गायला सुरुवात केली. त्यामुळे तिला शाळेत अनेकदा वाळीत टाकलं गेलं. ती खूप जाड होती आणि मुरुमं झाल्यामुळे तिच्या अंगावर इतके डाग पडले कि तिला शस्त्रक्रिया करून घ्यावी लागली. कृष्ण वर्णीय लोकांशी केलेल्या मैत्रीमुळे तिला शाळेत पिग, फ्रीक, निग्गा लव्हर, क्रीप अशी नावं पडली, ज्याची तिनं फारशी फिकीर केली नाही. याच काळात अनेक व्यक्तींशी मुक्तपणे ठेवलेल्या शारीरिक संबंधांमुळे तिची बदनामी झाली. एक अत्यंत जहाल मुलगी जिला दारू प्यायला खूप आवडतं अशी तिची जणू व्याख्याच बनून गेली. समाजाच्या चौकटीत ती कधी बसलीच नाही. त्या काळचं कॉलेज कॅम्पसचं वृत्तपत्र द डेली टेक्सन यात २७ जुलै १९६२ रोजी "She Dares to be Different" या मथळ्याखाली तिच्या बिनधास्त वागण्याचं वर्णन केलं. ती हवं तेव्हा अनवाणी येते, हवी तेव्हा लेविस (जिन्स) घालते, जवळ हार्प ठेवते म्हणजे पाहिजे तेव्हा गाणं म्हणता येईल. जिचं नाव आहे जॅनिस जॉप्लिन. अशी हि माहिती होती. अतिशय लहान वयात दारू, सिगारेट, गर्द अशा सर्व व्यसनांचा मनसोक्त उपभोग घ्यायला तिनं सुरुवात केली. खूप दारू पिऊन नशेत असताना तिनं पाहिलं गाणं लिहिलं (डिसेंबर १९६२) जे तिचं पाहिलं ध्वनि मुद्रित गाणं आहे "What Good Can Drinkin' Do". त्यानंतर १९६३ आणि १९६४ मध्ये तिने अनेक प्रसिद्ध गाणी गायली जेव्हा ती टेक्सस सोडून सॅन फ्रॅन्सिस्कोला आली होती. 

१९६३ मध्ये ऑस्टिन मध्ये कलाक्षेत्राचं शिक्षण घेत असताना तिला The Ugliest Man on Campus हे नाव पडलं. तिचं रांगडं रूप आणि कृष्णवर्णीय लोकांशी मैत्री यामुळे त्या काळच्या गोऱ्या समाजाला ती खटकत होती. तिचं नावारूपाला येणं अनेकांना पाहवत नव्हतं. त्याच सुमारास दुकानात वस्तू चोरताना तिला अटक झाली. त्यानंतर तिचं गर्दचं व्यसन खूप वाढलं. तिचं वजन ४० किलो झालं. मग १९६५ मध्ये तिनं काही काळ व्यसनांपासून दूर रहायचं ठरवलं. १९६५ मध्ये तिनं पीटर दे ब्लांक बरोबर साखरपुडा केला. पण काही काळानं त्यानं तिला नकार दिला. १९६५ - ६६ मध्ये तिनं मानसोपचार तज्ज्ञाकडून काही उपचार घेतले. त्या संस्थेला जॅनिसच्या मृत्यूनंतर तिच्या स्मरणार्थ 'युनाइटेड वे' असं नाव देण्यात आलं. पण व्यसनांपासून लांब राहणं काही फार काळ टिकलं नाही. जॅनिसच्या मते तिला व्यसनांपासून दूर राहून गाणी म्हणायचं बंद करायचं झालं तर ती एक साधी स्त्री बनून एक साधी नोकरी मग लग्न मग आई होणं असं सामान्य आयुष्य जगेल, जे तिला नको होतं. त्यानंतर अनेक म्युझिक बँड्स मध्ये तिनं आपली कला सादर करून खूप नाव मिळवलं. तिच्या गाण्याची कारकीर्द इतकी मोठी आहे कि इथे सगळं लिहिणं शक्यच नाही. तिच्या आवाजाची जातकुळी नेहमीची नसल्यानं आणि तिच्या सुंदर गीत रचनेनं तिनं लोकांच्या मनात पट्कन घर केलं. Big Brother and the Holding Company सारख्या मोठ्या बँड बरोबर तिनं केलेलं काम खूप गाजलं. त्या आधी तिनं सात गाणी स्वतः गिटार वाजवून मुद्रित केली जी तिच्या मरणानंतर 'This is Janis Joplin 1965' या नावानं १९९५ मध्ये नवीन अल्बम म्हणून जेम्स गर्ले यांनी पुनः प्रसारीत केली. ज्यात तिनं स्वतः लिहिलेलं एक गीतही होतं. ३१ जुलै १९६८ रोजी तिचा टीव्हीवर पहिला कार्यक्रम झाला. त्याच्या २ महिने आधी Vogue मासिकात रिचर्ड गोल्डस्टिन या नामांकित वृत्तपत्रकारानं तिचं खूप कौतुक केलं होतं. १९६८ च्या काळात तिच्या दारूच्या व्यसनामुळे तिला काही ठिकाणी संघर्ष करावा लागला. अनेकदा ती दारूच्या आहारी असताना कार्यक्रम करत असे ज्यामुळे वादावादी होऊन तिला आधीच्या ग्रुपपासून वेगळं व्हावं लागलं. पण डगमगेल ती जॅनिस कुठली. तिनं Kozmic Blues Band नावाचा स्वतःचा एक ग्रुप तयार केला आणि एकटीच्या जीवावर काही कलाकारांना हाताशी धरून अनेक सुंदर गाणी सादर केली. देशोदेशी तिनं कार्यक्रम केले. इंग्लंड, ब्राझील अशा अनेक ठिकाणी केलेले तिचे कार्यक्रम गाजले. अनेक पत्रकारांना तिनं बिनधास्त मुलाखती दिल्या. कोणताही आडपडदा न ठेवता तिनं आपले विचार मांडले. कारकिर्दीच्या शिखरावर असतानाही तिच्या गाण्यापेक्षा बिनधास्त वागण्यामुळे ती जास्त चर्चेत राहिली. 

समाजातलं वागणं असो वा शारीरिक संबंध जॅनिस मोकळेपणानं वागत आली. मनस्वी लोकांचे अनेक किस्से आपण ऐकतो. काही खरोखर मनस्वी असतात तर काही लोक मी मनस्वी आहे हे दाखवण्यात धन्यता मानतात, मात्र एका मर्यादेपुढे त्यांची नाटकं चालत नाहीत. कारण त्यांना सामाजिक भान असतं, केवळ प्रसिद्धीसाठी ते असं करतात. पण जॅनिस खऱ्या अर्थानं मनस्विनी होती. तिनं आपलं बेभान आयुष्य कोणत्याही बंधनासाठी सोडलं नाही. किंबहुना ती बेभान झाली आहे हे तिच्या लेखी महत्त्वाचं नव्हतं कारण ते तिच्यासाठी नेहमीचंच होतं.         

तिचे पुरुष आणि स्त्रिया दोहोंशीही संबंध असत हे तिनं कधीही लपवलं नाही. तिचं खाजगी आयुष्यही वादग्रस्तच राहिलं. १९६३ मध्ये जे व्हिटेकर नावाच्या एका कृष्णवर्णीय स्त्रीबरोबर ती राहत होती. पण जॅनिसचं गर्दचं व्यसन आणि इतरांशी असलेले शारीरिक संबंध यामुळे जे तिच्या आयुष्यातून निघून गेली. पेगी कासेरटा बरोबर नंतर तिचे संबंध जुळले. जे जॅनिसच्या मरणापर्यंत होते पण त्यात खूप चढ उतार आले. पेगीनं तिच्या आणि जॅनिसच्या एकत्र आयुष्याबद्दल पुस्तकही लिहिलं आणि अनेक मुलाखतीही दिल्या. पुरुषांबद्दल बोलायचं तर तिच्या आयुष्यात अनेक पुरुष आले ज्यात संगीतकार लिओनार्ड कोहेन, टॉक शो करणारे डिक कॅव्हेट, संगीतकार कंट्री जो मॅकडॉनल्ड, कादंबरीकार सेथ मॉर्गन अशी काही नावं आहेत. सेथ मॉर्गन यांच्याबरोबर ती विवाह करणार होती. १९७० मध्ये मरणाच्या थोडं आधी ती ब्राझीलमध्ये असताना डेव्हिड नीहोस नावाच्या एका सामान्य अमेरीकन व्यक्तीशी तिची ओळख झाली. त्याचं प्रेमात रूपांतर झालं आणि डेव्हिडनं तिला गर्द (हेरॉईन) पासून दूर केलं. पण लवकरच तिनं परत व्यसन सुरु केलं आणि डेव्हिड तिच्यापासून दूर गेला. पण त्यानं तिच्यावर प्रेम करणं थांबवलं नाही. जॅनिसच्या मृत्यूनंतर तिच्या हॉटेलवर त्याचं पत्र आलं ज्यात त्यानं त्याच्या प्रेमाची कबुली देऊन तिला माहित नाही इतकं प्रेम तिच्यावर करत असल्याचं सांगितलं. जॅनिसवर चित्रपट बनवणाऱ्या ऍमी बर्ग यांच्या मते ते पत्र जॅनिसला मिळालं असतं तर कदाचित आज चित्र वेगळं असतं. काहीही असलं तरी तिच्या संपूर्ण आयुष्यात समाजाला माहित असलेल्या साच्यात ती कधी अडकलीच नाही.           

जॅनिसला घाबरणं जणू माहितच नव्हतं. एका पार्टीमध्ये ख्यातनाम संगीतकार जिम मॉरीसन यांचं काही वागणं तिला पटलं नाही तेव्हा तिनं सरळ एक दारूची बाटली त्यांच्या डोक्यावर फोडली. बॉब साईडमन या प्रसिद्ध फोटोग्राफरनं जेव्हा तिला अंगातील शर्ट काढून फोटो काढायला सांगितलं तेव्हा तिनं तिला नग्नावस्थेत फोटो द्यायला आवडेल असं सांगितलं. इतकंच नाही तर एकदा जेव्हा एका कार्यक्रमाला तिला उशीर झाला तेव्हा तिनं सरळ ती सेक्स करत असल्यानं उशीर झाला असं सांगितलं. अनेकदा ह्या कारणामुळे ती अंतर्वस्त्र न घालता स्टेजवर येऊन कार्यक्रम सादर करत असे. तिच्या ह्या बिनधास्त वागण्याचे अनेक किस्से आहेत. आणि ह्यामुळेच अनेक ठिकाणी तिची बदनामी किंवा पुरुषांनी तिला गृहीत धरण्याचे प्रकारही घडले. जॅनिसला स्टेजवर वा इतर वेळीही किंचाळायला फार आवडायचं. एकदा फ्लोरीडामध्ये कार्यक्रम असताना ती पोलिसांवर इतकी ओरडली कि तिला शेवटी अटक करावं लागलं.              

    

जॅनिस नावाच्या या वादळी व्यक्तीची एक नाजूक बाजूही होती. तिला चित्रकारीता आणि कविता करायला खूप आवडायचं. त्या काळच्या समाजात बंडखोरी करून कृष्णवर्णीय लोकांवर आपलं प्रेम व्यक्त करायला तिनं कधीच मागेपुढे पाहिलं नाही. ब्लूज या संगीत प्रकारची महाराणी असलेली बेस्सी स्मिथ हि कृष्णवर्णीय गायिका जॅनिसची आदर्श होती. बेस्सीचं १९३७ सालीच निधन झालं होतं. पण जेव्हा जॅनिसला कळलं कि तिला दफन करताना चांगली जागा मिळाली नाहीये तेव्हा जॅनिसनं स्वखर्चानं तिला सन्मानपूर्वक जागा उपलब्ध करून दिली आणि तिच्या थडग्यावर  “The Greatest Blues Singer in the World Will Never Stop Singing.” कोरून घेतलं. मी म्हणजे बेस्सीचाच पुनर्जन्म आहे असं ती अभिमानानं सांगत असे.  

मुद्दाम प्रवाहाच्या विरोधात जायचं म्हणून जॅनिस अशी कधीच वागली नाही. अगदी सहजतेनं गोष्टी घडत गेल्या. तिची व्यसनं, बेभान होणं, स्वच्छंद वागणं सारं काही सहाजवस्थेतच होतं, म्हणूनच तिचा कोणाला कधी राग आला नाही. मनसोक्त आयुष्य जगणाऱ्या या मनस्विनीचा मृत्यूही सगळ्यांना चटका लावून गेला. ४ ऑक्टोबर १९७० रोजी वयाच्या अवघ्या २७ व्या वर्षी तिचं निधन झालं. हॉलिवूडच्या लँडमार्क हॉटेलमध्ये मद्यधुंद अवस्थेत असताना गर्दच्या अतिसेवनामुळे (Drug overdose) तिचा प्राण गेला. ज्या बेभानपणाच्या आधारावर ती मनस्वी आयुष्य जगली त्या बेभानपणानेच तिचा जीव घेतला. म्हणूनच ती खऱ्या अर्थानं मनस्विनी होती. तिच्यावर अनेक चित्रपट, पुस्तकं सारं काही नंतर आलं. पण मरणानंतरही तिनं 'वेगळेपण' काही सोडलं नाही. वयाच्या २७व्या वर्षी अनेक कलाकार या ना त्या कारणानं मरण पावले आहेत. अशा व्यक्तींचा, विशेषतः कलाकारांचा एक 'क्लब'च तयार झाला ज्याला 'The 27 Club' म्हणतात. आणि रॉक संगीताची ही अभिषिक्त सम्राज्ञी या क्लबची पहिली सदस्य आहे. म्हणजे इथेही तिनं आपलं वर्चस्व गाजवलं. तिचा मृत्यू 'दुर्दैवी' होता असं मी कधीही म्हणणार नाही. तिनं ओढवून घेतलेलं ते मरण होतं. पण याची पूर्ण कल्पना असूनही जॅनिस मुक्तपणे बागडत राहिली. एका वेगळ्या जातकुळीच्या आवाजाची मधुर भेट तिनं आपल्याला दिली आहे, जी कायम स्मरणात राहील. या वेड्या बागड्या मुलीनं मरणाच्या ३ दिवस आधी म्हणजे १ ऑक्टोबरला आपल्या मृत्युपत्रात बदल केले. त्यात तिनं तिच्या मरणानंतर आपल्या जवळच्या मित्र परिवारासाठी २५०० डॉलर्स एव्हढी मोठी रक्कम ठेवली. तिच्या जाण्याचं दुःख न करता त्यांनी कॅलिफोर्निया मधील तिच्या आवडत्या पबमध्ये रात्रभर एक मोठी पार्टी करून जल्लोष करावा यासाठी ते पैसे ठेवले होते. "यामुळे माझा मित्र परीवार माझ्यानंतर एक जल्लोष करू शकेल" असं तिनं नमूद केलं होतं. 

अमेरीकेची पहिली रॉकस्टार म्हणून आजही तिच्याकडे आदरानं पाहिलं जातं. अशा ह्या रांगड्या प्रतिभेला आणि मनस्वी कलाकाराला माझा सलाम. 

जॅनिस जॉप्लिन तू कायम आमच्या स्मरणात राहशील !!!

America had been and remained an all time attraction for many people across the globe. Individual freedom here aspires to be universal. The freedom and the liberty of the culture always fascinates the world. Due to the opportunity for prosperity which is the ethos of the nation, many revolutionary changes in the field of music occurred here and the people accepted them without hesitation. The field of art was luckily in the safer hands and was a bit away from the political gewgaw like racism, religious intolerance etc. Of course in the early 1900's it took a bit of time to come out of racism and the image of being a man's world. In 1880 Chicago music critic George P. Upton argued in his book Women in Music that "Women lacked the innate creativity to compose good music". In the 20th century Richard A. Reublin and Richard G. Beil opined that "Lack of mention of women (songwriters) is a glaring and embarrassing omission in our musical heritage." In the earlier era, women were allowed to perform on the songs composed and written by males. But women composers were significantly underrepresented in the music repertoire just due to being women. Slowly many female artists emerged and conquered the world of music including Rock, Jazz etc. All-female bands also started at the same time and gained a huge popularity.

Rock music revolutionized the musical taste of the young generation. Janis Joplin is one of the pre-eminent name in the world of Rock n Roll. No wonder this rebellious and audacious singer with a unique vocal style, immediately captured the heart of the audience and became the heartthrob to the young generation. I haven't written this article to just introduce the readers to Janis as a singer, but one can learn about the true meaning of 'freedom' from her life. She always wanted to live a fast and furious life breaking the walls of the society, though it was at the cost of her life. The bolishie girl was not easy to digest for the white collar society. This raw talent achieved everything in her short life without getting bound into the etiquettes of the society, which seemed tasteless to her. Here, I am trying to explain her career and life from an astrological point of view.  

On 19th January 1943 at Port Arthur, Texas Dorothy and Seth Joplin were blessed with the baby girl named Janis. As a teenager she befriended a group of outcasts. The group performed in albums mainly in the Blues genre, which is an African-American folk music. She always mentioned that this group influenced her decision to become a singer. In her school days she began singing Blues and folk music. So she was ostracized and bullied in high school. After some time she became overweight and suffered so badly from acne that she required a surgery. Due to the close relationship with many black friends she was routinely taunted and called names like pig, freak, nigga lover, creep etc. but she naver bothered about it. Due to her reputation of being sexually promiscuous she faced a lot of vilification. Janis was known as a 'tough girl who likes to drink.' She didn't fit in with her peers...never. The campus newspaper, The Daily Texan, ran a profile of her in the issue dated July 27, 1962, headlined "She Dares to Be Different." The article began, "She goes barefooted when she feels like it, wears Levis to class because they're more comfortable, and carries her autoharp with her everywhere she goes so that in case she gets the urge to break into song, it will be handy. Her name is Janis Joplin." Janis started enjoying drugs, cigarettes and booze from a very early age. Her first song "What Good Can Drinkin' Do" was recorded in December 1962, when according to her it was written by her when she drank herself into a stupor. Then she recorded numerous hits in 1963 and 1964 when she left Texas for San Francisco. In 1963 while studying at the University of Austin, she was voted as The Ugliest Man on Campus. The racist white community could not tolerate her friendship with Afro Americans as well as the sturdy looks of a female musician. Many conservative people were jealous of her success. Then drug and alcohol fueled performances of this front woman of the band started causing trouble. In 1965 when her weight was reduced to just 40 kg, she tried to lead a sober life. In the same year she got engaged to Peter de Blanc. But after some time he rejected her and moved on in his life. In 1965 - 66 she had regular sessions with a psychiatric social worker in a counseling agency. This agency changed its name to 'United Way' after her death. Well, this sober lifestyle was really short lived. According to Janis if she were to live a sober life and avoid singing professionally, she would have to become a keypunch operator (as she had done a few years earlier) or a secretary, and then a wife and mother, and she would have to become very similar to all the other women in Port Arthur. Of Course which she never imagined. Then she performed in various bands and achieved huge success becoming the first female Rockstar of America. Her career in music is so vast that it is not possible to mention the details in a small article. She became the talisman of the youth due to her songwriting talent and a unique vocal ability. She became the lead singer of the famous band, Big Brother and the Holding Company. This gave her enormous fame and success. Before joining the band, she recorded seven studio tracks with her acoustic guitar. These tracks were later issued as a new album in 1995, titled This is Janis Joplin 1965 by James Gurley. Amongst the songs were a famous song composed by her. On 31 July 1968 she made her first nationwide television appearance. Just 2 months before her appearance, Richard Goldstein praised her in the May issue of Vogue. Around 1968 was the time when Janis started to struggle due to her alcohol and drug abuse. This was amongst the major reasons for her splitting from the Big Brother and the Holding Company. Then she formed the Kozmic Blues Band composed of many talented artists, which also gained huge popularity. She performed in various countries like the UK, Brazil etc. She gave many unafraid interviews and bold photoshoots. She fearlessly expressed her thoughts in her interviews. Even though she was at the peak of her career as the Queen of Rock, she caught more attention due to her audacious behaviour. 

May be the fearless behaviour or bisexual nature, Janis was always arbitrary and sometimes erratic. We often hear about people who are subject to anecdotes. But very few people are really arbitrate,  others are just faking their stories merely to remain in gossip. After a certain limit they can't continue with their imposture as they have social consciousness. Well, Janis was truly arbitrary and wild. She never stopped living her wild lifestyle for any fake consciousness as she never had one. The wildness was so normal for her that she casually thrust aside the social values.  

Janis never tried to hide her bisexual nature. She had troubled relationships with both men and women. In 1963 she briefly lived with an African American woman named Jae Whitaker. But she broke off their relationship because of Janis's hard drug use and sexual relationships with other people.  Janis then began a romantic relationship with Peggy Caserta. This on again off again relationship continued till Janis's death. Later, Peggy authored books and gave various interviews on their relationship. Regarding men in Janis's life, there are many names including notable celebrities like musician Leonard Cohen, talk show host Dick Cavett, musician Country Joe Mcdonald, novelist Seth Morgan and many more. Janis was all set to get married to Seth Morgan near the end of her life. In 1970 (just before her death) she went to Brazil and met a middle-class American traveller, David Niehaus. When David helped Janis kick her habit of drugs and alcohol, they fell in love. But their relationship suffered when she again started using drugs. In spite of this he never fell out of love. When Janis died in a hotel room, a telegraph from David was found. It wrote "Love you Mama, more than you know…". According to Amy Berg, who later made a film on Janis's life, thought that the things would have turned out differently if Janis had received it. Nonetheless, Janis could not mold herself in the mediocre lifestyle which could have been easily accepted by the society.            

'Fear' was the word which never appeared in the dictionary of this raw talent. Once at a party held, Janis was turned off by famous musician Jim Morrison’s obnoxious behavior. When she lost her temper, she hit him over the head with a bottle of booze. When photographer Bob Seidemann asked Janis if she’d pose topless for him to make a statement about the idealism of hippie culture, she said she would rather pose completely naked. Moreover, she wasn’t shy about showing off her body to her audiences. Once she was late to the stage because she had been having sex in her dressing room. When she appeared on the stage, she was not wearing her underwear. Janis has a rich store of such anecdotes. This not only caused the defamation but men were not hesitant to sexually advance. Janis always liked to scream on or off the stage. During one concert in Florida, she shouted obscenities at the police. It turned out so bad that she got arrested after the concert. 

This stormy persona had a delicate side which very few people know about. She liked painting and poetry. She rebelliously expressed her love for her African American friends, which was not accepted by the then racist society. The Empress of the Blues, African American artist Bessie Smith was her idol. Sadly she expired in 1937 but was buried in an unmarked grave. This bothered Janis to such an extent that she paid for a tombstone to be erected, with the epitaph, “The Greatest Blues Singer in the World Will Never Stop Singing.” Janis proudly told her friends that she believed she was Smith’s reincarnation.    

Janis never purposely went against the flow. It just happened with her naturally... smoothly..Her addictions, her audacious behaviour and entirely arbitrary behaviour was so natural that nobody hated her for all this. This wayward died too young, shocking everybody when the 'speed freak' permanently came to a standstill. On October 4th 1970, merely at the age of 27, she was found dead in her room in Hollywood's Landmark Motor Hotel due to drug overdose. Alcohol was also found in her blood. Unbridled passion was the driving force of her life and the same took her life. That is why she was literally arbitrary. There were many movies and books written about her life. But Janis truly exceptional, even after her death. There are many celebrities who died at the age of 27, leading to the collective name 'The 27 Club'. Janis the Queen of Rock, is the first member of this club. She dominated even after her death. I will never say that her death was unfortunate as she knowingly approached the death. Though she had an idea of the outcome of her outrageous behaviour, she continued to be like that. Her unique vocal style was a gift for the music lovers. This 'madwoman' made a few changes in her will just 3 days before her death i.e. on 1st October. In her will, she left her friends and family $2,500 to throw a wake party at her favourite bar in California. She mentioned "So my friends can get blasted after I'm gone." 

She is indeed America's first Rockstar. I salute her unbound, fearless persona and everlasting voice.
