परंपरा आणि आधुनिकता - एक सुवर्णमध्य (२) {Cultural Traditions and Modernization - A Golden Mean (2)}

जुन्या आणि नवीन पिढीतील मतभेदांमधे दैनंदिन घरगुती विधींचा मोठ्या प्रमाणावर समावेश असतो. यातले काही विधी वैदिक आहेत तर काही तांत्रिक. या विधींच्या सखोल माहितीबरोबरच यांचा उद्देश समजून घेतला तर हे विधी नक्कीच चांगल्या पद्धतीने पार पाडता येतील. कोणताही विधी कसा करायचा याची माहिती अनेक ठिकाणी मिळू शकते. मात्र मूळ उद्देशच माहित नसेल तर त्यातलं गांभीर्य कमी होतं. काही अनुत्तरित प्रश्नांमुळे असे विधी किंवा एखाद्या देवतेची आराधना का करावी याबद्दल आजच्या पिढीचं मन साशंक आहे. पौराणिक कथांच्या माध्यमातून याची उत्तरं देण्याचा प्रयत्न केला जातो. पण पौराणिक कथा हे काही याचं उत्तर नाही किंबहुना आजच्या पिढीला ते पाटणारही नाही. अनेकदा पौराणिक कथांची व्युत्पत्ती ही लोकांनी ते विधी करावेत यासाठीच झालेली आढळते. एखाद्या देवतेचे चमत्कार, त्या देवतेच्या आराधनेमुळे एखाद्या काल्पनिक व्यक्तीची झालेली भरभराट, अनेक संकटांतून होणारी सुटका ह्या गोष्टी अशक्य कोटीतील वाटतात. पण विविध ग्रंथांचं वाचन किंवा पारायण करायला सांगताना अशा उदाहरणांचा दाखला दिला जातो. दैनंदिन विधी करतानाही अनेक व्यक्तींनी सांगितलेल्या वेगवेगळ्या 'उपायांचा' उल्लेख केला जातो ज्यामुळे गोंधळ वाढतो. काही नेहमीच्या विधींबद्दल आणि त्यांच्या उद्देशांबद्दल माहिती घेण्याचा प्रयत्न करू. 

आपण ज्या घरात राहतो त्या वास्तूच्या पूजेपासून विधींची सुरुवात होते. नवीन घर घेताना वास्तुशास्त्राचा वापर  किंवा घर घेतलं असेल तर त्यात करण्यात येणारे बदल हा मुख्य मुद्दा असतो. वास्तूपूजन अनेक विधींनी संपन्न केलं जातं. उदकशांति, गृहप्रवेश, वास्तुशांती, कलशपूजन, गणेशपूजन, अभिषेक, होम असे अनेक विधी यात येतात. प्रत्येक विधीसाठी काही पद्धती व नियम आहेत. याचा उद्देश हा  'वास्तू' म्हणजे ज्या घरात आपण राहतो किंवा राहणार आहोत त्या स्थानातील दोषांचं परिमार्जन करणे. वास्तुशास्त्रात आकाश, अग्नी, वायू, जल, आणि पृथ्वी या पंचतत्वांना विशेष महत्त्व आहे. आपण ज्या भूमीवर घर बांधतो त्यावर हवा, पाऊस, अग्नी, पाणी यासर्वांचा परीणाम होतच असतो. या तत्त्वांचं म्हणजेच निसर्गाचं पूजन करणं अगदी योग्य आहे. वास्तुशास्त्रानुसार निर्धारीत केलेल्या दिशा ह्या निसर्गाशी निगडित आहेत. उदाहरणार्थ घराचं मुख्य प्रवेशद्वार पूर्वाभिमुख असावं असं वास्तुशास्त्रात सांगितलं आहे. पूर्व दिशेकडूनच सूर्याचा उदय होतो. सूर्योदयानंतर घरात जर सूर्यकिरणं पडली तर त्याचा निश्चितच फायदा होतो. पूर्व दिशेला मुख करून कोणतंही काम केलं तर तशी ऊर्जाही त्या दिशेकडून मिळते. शरीरावर याचा चांगला परीणाम होऊन आपल्याला उत्साही वाटतं. म्हणून पूर्व दिशेला महत्त्व आहे. दक्षिण दिशेला पाय करून झोपू नये कारण ती यमाची दिशा आहे असंही वास्तुशास्त्रानुसार सांगितलं जातं. पृथ्वीचं चुंबकीय क्षेत्र दक्षिणोत्तर आहे. आपला रक्तप्रवाह डोक्यापासून पायापर्यंत होत असतो. आपलं शीर उत्तर दिशेचं प्रतीक असल्याने जर उत्तरेला शीर असेल तर पृथ्वीचं चुंबकीय क्षेत्र आणि आपलं शरीर दोघांची उत्तर दिशा एकच येत असल्याने दोन समान ध्रुवांमधील अपकर्षणाने रक्तप्रवाह नीट होत नाही. यामुळे निद्रानाश, रक्तदाब यासारखे विकार उत्पन्न होतात. वैज्ञानिक दृष्ट्या ह्या गोष्टी सिद्ध झाल्या असल्या तरी लोकांनी श्रद्धा ठेवून याचं पालन करावं म्हणून दहा दिशांचे दहा स्वामी सांगितले गेले आहेत. उदाहरणार्थ दक्षिण दिशेचा स्वामी यम, पूर्वेचा इंद्र इत्यादी. यामागे पौराणिक कथांचा संदर्भही दिला जातो. यामागे असणाऱ्या नैसर्गिक कारणांचं आकलन झालं तर पौराणिक कथांच्या संदर्भाची गरज भासणार नाही. हा प्रतीकवाद जर समजून घेतला तर त्याची विज्ञानाशी सांगड घालता येऊ शकेल. 

वास्तुशास्त्राप्रमाणे कटाक्षाने नियम पाळून एखादी वास्तू बांधली तर सर्व अडचणी दूर होतील का? असा एक प्रश्न पडतो. आपण राहतो ती वास्तू हा आपल्या आयुष्याचा केवळ एक भाग आहे. त्यामुळे केवळ वास्तुशास्त्राचा अवलंब करून अडचणी पूर्णपणे दूर होणं शक्य नाही. आपली कर्मं आणि त्या अनुषंगाने घडणाऱ्या घटना घडणारच आहेत. पण जिथे प्रयत्न करूनही वास्तूमधील काही दोषांमुळे यश मिळत नाही किंवा त्रास होतो तिथे या शास्त्राचा उपयोग नक्की होऊ शकतो. उदाहरणार्थ जेव्हा दक्षिणेकडे पाय करून निद्रा घेतली जाते तेव्हा जे आरोग्याचे त्रास होतात ते औषधांमुळे कमी होत नाहीत तर झोपण्याची दिशा बदलून नक्कीच कमी होतात. अशा वेळी एक पूरक उपाय म्हणून वास्तूशास्त्राचा अवलंब फायदेशीर ठरेल. याचं वैज्ञानिक कारण समजून घेतल्यास असे बदल करणं म्हणजे अवडंबर आहे असा गैरसमजही दूर होईल. 

सध्याच्या काळात वास्तुशास्त्रानुसार योग्य असलेलं घर घेणं दर वेळी शक्य नसतं. किंवा घर घेतल्यानंतर त्यात मोठे बदल कारणंही फारसं शक्य नसतं. अशा वेळी या शास्त्राचा अवलंब कसा करायचा? तर मुख्य गोष्ट अशी लक्षात ठेवावी की आपलं भवितव्य हे केवळ वास्तूवर अवलंबून नाही तर आपल्या वर्तनावर अवलंबून आहे. त्यामुळे वास्तू कशीही असली तरी आपलं वर्तन योग्य असावं. वास्तू विकत घेताना व्यावहारिक गोष्टी नक्कीच पाहाव्यात. वास्तूमध्ये जर काही बदल करावेसे वाटले तर जेव्हढे बदल शक्य आहेत तेव्हढेच करावेत. वास्तुशास्त्राप्रमाणे दिलेले सर्वच बदल करणं आताच्या काळात अशक्य आहे. म्हणून वास्तुशांती किंवा एखादा होम जरूर करावा जेणेकरून वास्तू शुद्ध होईल. पण वेगवेगळ्या व्यक्तींचे सल्ले घेऊन घरात सतत बदल करणं अप्रस्तुत ठरेल. घरात एखादी वाईट घटना घडली तर त्याला केवळ वास्तुदोष कारण आहे असं मानणं चुकीचं आहे. आपल्या विधिलिखिताप्रमाणे एखादी घटना घडते आणि संयोगाने तेव्हाच नवीन वास्तू खरेदी केली असेल तर तो योगायोगही असू शकतो. वास्तूमध्ये कोणताही बदल करताना त्यामागचं कारण समजून घेऊन मगच बदल करावेत. वास्तुशास्त्राचा अतिरेक न करता ज्या अडचणी खरंच वास्तूमधील दोषांमुळे ( उदा: काही वास्तूंचे क्रमांक (घर/फ्लॅट नंबर) असे असतात जे काही लोकांनाच लाभतात.) किंवा चुकीच्या दिशेला काही गोष्टी असल्याने येत असतील केवळ अशा अडचणींसाठी या शास्त्राचा वापर करावा. सतत वास्तूदोष किंवा वास्तूसंबंधी शुद्धीकरण बाकी आहे असा विचार केल्यास मनही अप्रसन्न राहील. ज्यामुळे घरात वाईट ऊर्जा वाढेल. याउलट मन प्रसन्न ठेऊन आवश्यक तेव्हढेच बदल वास्तूमधे केल्यास त्याचा निश्चित चांगला परीणाम पाहायला मिळेल. जसं ज्योतिषशास्त्र हे एक मार्गदर्शक आहे तसंच वास्तुशास्त्र हे एक पूरक शास्त्र आहे. आपलं आयुष्य घडवताना वास्तूदोषांमुळे येणाऱ्या अडचणी दूर करण्यासाठी सहाय्यक म्हणून या शास्त्राचा वापर नक्की करता येईल. पण वास्तुशास्त्रामुळे आपलं संपूर्ण आयुष्यच बदलून जाईल अशी अपेक्षा करू नये.

वास्तुशास्त्राचा संयमित वापर केल्यास त्याचा फायदा होईल यात शंकाच नाही. पण याला एक अपवाद आहे तो म्हणजे बाधिक वास्तू. एखाद्या वास्तूमध्ये किंवा त्या जागी पूर्वी असलेल्या एखाद्या वास्तूमध्ये अनेक वाईट घटना, हत्या, आत्महत्या झालेल्या असतात. ज्यामुळे अनेक विचित्र अनुभव त्या वास्तूत येत असतात. या बाधिक वास्तू कशा ओळखायच्या, यात कितपत तथ्य आहे आणि यावर काही उपाय करता येतील का याबद्दल पुढील लेखात माहिती देण्याचा प्रयत्न करेन.

The disputes between the earlier generation and the new generation commonly include the protocols of the rituals mostly daily rituals. Some rituals are Vedic while some are Tantric. Along with the detailed information of these rituals, if we understand the principles behind them then only performing these rituals will make sense. The detailed protocols of these rituals are available now a days. But if the purpose of the ritual is not known it may reduce it's seriousness. Today's generation is suspicious about these rituals or worshiping a deity, as many questions are still unanswered. These questions are many times answered by giving references of different mythological stories. Mythology is not the answer to the queries rather the new generation is not going to accept such answers as this reference has no scientific views. Many times we can observe that the mythological stories are created to make people believe in the rituals. The examples mentioned in mythology like miracles performed by a deity, sudden gain of prosperity by an imaginary person due to worshiping of a deity, overcoming impossible obstacles in life by worshiping a deity etc. sound unthinkable. Still such examples are given while reading some holy texts. While performing daily rituals various 'remedies' given by different people are taken into account which simply adds to the confusion. Well lets try and understand the principles and purpose behind some common rituals. 

The rituals start by the Poojan or worship of the land/ house (Vastu) where we stay or going to stay in future. The science or system of architecture is known as Vastushastra. The use of Vastushastra while purchasing a new house or changes made in a owned house according to Vastushastra are the most important points here. The worshiping of the Vastu is performed by different rituals like Udakshanti, Vastushanti, Kalash Poojan, Abhishek, Homa, Ganesh Poojan etc. Every ritual has a defined protocol. The purpose of these rituals is to remove any Dosha or defect of the Vastu. Vastushastra gives utmost importance to five basic elements i.e. Akash (sky/space), Agni (fire), Vayu (Air), Jal (Water) and Prithvi (Earth). The basic element Earth on which we construct our house is naturally affected by remaining 4 elements i.e. fire, water, air and sky. Worshiping of these elements i.e. nature itself is absolutely valid. The directions and their lords specified by Vastushastra are based on nature. For example Vastushastra says the main door of the house should be facing the East. As the Sun rises from the East, the early Sun rays falling in the house are definitely beneficial. If we work by facing East we get a positive energy. This energy and Sun rays are good for our health which make us more energetic. So East direction is important in Vastushastra. Another point in Vastushastra is we should not sleep with our feet facing South direction. Vastushastra says South is the direction of Yama, the God of death. The scientific reason behind this is the human body has a magnetic field with head as it's north pole. The Earth's magnetic field around us also has its north pole at north direction. So if we sleep with our head facing north then Earth's north pole and our body's north pole create a repulsive force as similar poles repulse each other. This disturbs the human blood circulation causing health issues like blood pressure, stress, insomnia etc. The synchronization of internal body clock is disturbed periodically. Though these facts are scientifically proved ten directions are allotted with ten lords (deities) in mythological texts to make people believe and follow the principles of Shastras. For example lord of South direction is Yama, lord of East direction is Indra etc. If the scientific aspects of the principles are understood there is no need of these mythological references. If we understand and interpret the symbolism correctly it can be linked to modern science easily.         

Well, if we strictly follow all the protocols in Vastushastra and construct a house will it solve all the problems in life? The Vastu or the house where we stay or work is a part of our life. Thus completely depending on Vastushastra is not going to solve all our problems. Our Karma is definitely going to reflect on our lives. Vastushastra can be useful where success is not attained in spite of putting all the efforts or some trouble is caused due to Vastu dosha or defects in the Vastu. For example if someone is sleeping facing the feet towards South direction and having blood pressure problems then this can be reduced or cured by changing the sleeping position. In such cases sometimes medicines do not work as internal body clock and blood circulation are disturbed. So Vastu tips can be used as a supplementary remedy for the problems. Understanding the scientific base of this shastra can also reduce the misunderstandings about this science.    

Today it has become almost impossible to buy a house or land according to Vastushastra. Making major changes in a already purchased house are also not possible every time. Then how to use Vastushastra in today's world? Then the first thing to remember is our life and future is not solely dependent on Vastu but it depends on our behaviour. So our behaviour should be good irrespective of our Vastu. While purchasing a house or land practical points can not be neglected. In spite of all if any changes are required according to Vastushastra then only possible changes should be made. Each and every correction according to  Vastushastra can not be done. To purify the Vastu, initially poojas or homas like Vastushanti should be performed. But taking advises from different authorities and making changes constantly is not advisable. If any bad incidence occurs in life then assuming that it has happened only due to Vastu dosha will not be a proper judgement. Some incidences occur in our life as per the destiny and  a new house is purchased in the same period it can be merely a coincidence. So any changes to be made in the house should be followed after knowing the reason behind it. Rather than blindly following or overusing Vastushastra one should apply the Vastu tips only when the problems are caused by Vastu dosha is confirmed. For example some flat numbers are not suitable for the owners or some things in house are kept facing the wrong directions which cause serious ill effects. One should try to remain happy in the house. If the people in the house keep thinking that there is Vastu dosha it will create negative energy in the house. If the people in the house keep their minds full of positiveness and make the necessary changes then it will definitely show good results. As Astrology is a guiding science, Vastushastra is a supplementary science. Vastushastra can be used to remove the ill effects due to Vastu dosha which create obstacles in life. But expecting that Vastushastra can create miracles and change one's life completely will not be correct.     

There is no doubt that proper use of Vastushastra can help in many ways. The only exception to this is haunted or possessed houses or locations. In some places a lot of foul incidences occur like suicides, murders etc. Later people in such places experience weird things happening or face a lot of problems in life. How to know that any location is haunted or possessed? How much factual it is? Is there any remedy on such paranormal activities? Lets try and get the answers in my next article.

ज्योतिष शास्त्रात दिलेले उपाय असोत किंवा जुन्या रूढी परंपरा, आजची पिढी आणि आधीची पिढी यात हे उपाय, विधी, सणवार कसे करायचे याबद्दल दुमत आढळतं. नवीन पिढीचा ह्या सगळ्यावर विश्वास नाही आणि त्यामुळे देवाधर्माचं कार्य नीट पार पडत नाही असा आधीच्या पिढीचा समज आहे. आणि नवीन पिढीला हे बऱ्याचदा थोतांड वाटतं आणि जरी तथ्य वाटत असलं तरी सगळे यथासांग विधी करण्याइतका वेळ नसतो यामुळे आधीची पिढी जाचक वाटते. या सगळ्याबद्दल शास्त्र काय सांगतं आणि त्याचे कोणते परीणाम आहेत याची थोडी माहिती मिळाली तर असे गैरसमज नक्कीच दूर होतील. 

हे गैरसमज कसे निर्माण झाले आहेत याचा आढावा घेतला तर काही गोष्टी लक्षात येतात. आपल्याकडे रूढी परंपरा, घराण्याच्या चाली रीती अशा अनेक गोष्टींची सरमिसळ आहे. आधीच्या पिढीबद्दल बोलायचं तर एकूणच महत्त्वाकांक्षी लोकांची संख्या कमी होती. शिक्षण आणि अर्थार्जन यांतील संधी मर्यादित होत्या. स्त्रिया आर्थिक दृष्ट्या इतक्या स्वावलंबी नव्हत्या. त्यांना शिक्षण, नोकरी किंवा व्यवसाय यांची फारशी मुभा नसायची. आपलं कुटुंब सांभाळून त्या शिक्षण घेत आणि जमलं तरच अर्थार्जन करत. पुरुषांच्या बाबतीत बोलायचं झालं तर मोजकंच शिक्षण घेऊन नोकरी करण्याकडे कल होता. नोकरीत बढती मिळवणे किंवा उच्चशिक्षण याची ओढ कमी होती. यामुळे पूर्वापार चालत आलेल्या परंपरा सांभाळणं शक्य होतं. मुबलक वेळ आणि एकत्र कुटुंब पद्धती यामुळे यथासांग विधी करून एखादा सण किंवा व्रत वैकल्य केली जात असत. कोणत्याही पूजेची तयारी, नैवेद्य आणि स्वयंपाक यांची जबाबदारी स्त्रियांवर होती. स्त्रियाही सर्व जबाबदाऱ्या सांभाळत असत. आताच्या पिढीनं हे सगळं लहानपणी पाहिलंही आहे पण काळ इतक्या झट्कन बदलला की या पिढीला हे सगळं करणं अशक्य होऊ लागलंय. आधीच्या पिढीला मात्र हा बदल पचवता येत नाही कारण त्यांनी हे सगळे सोपस्कार केले आहेत. मग आमच्या मुलांनी का करू नयेत असा प्रश्न त्यांना पडतो. स्त्रिया स्वावलंबी व्हायला लागल्या, परदेशात जाऊ लागल्या त्यामुळे या सोपस्कारांसाठी वेळ अपुरा पडू लागला. आर्थिक गणितं बदलली आणि महागाईमुळे स्त्रियांना नोकरी करणं अनिवार्य होऊ लागलं. आहे त्यात समाधान मानणाऱ्या आधीच्या पिढीला हे थोडं खटकायला लागलं. आजही अनेक मुलींना विशेषतः सुनांना घर सांभाळून नोकरी करण्याचा सल्ला दिला जातो. सुनांकडून विशेष अपेक्षा असतात. यात स्त्री वर्गाची फरफट होते आणि खटके उडायला लागतात. एकत्र कुटुंब पद्धती नसल्याने सगळी जबाबदारी एकट्या स्त्रीवर आली तर शारीरिक दृष्ट्याही ते कठीण होतं. 

या सगळ्या व्यावहारिक अडचणींमध्ये या दोन्ही पिढ्यांत एक वैचारिक मतभेदही आहे आणि तो खूप महत्त्वाचा आहे. कोणताही विधी, पूजा, सणवार एका विशिष्ट पद्धतीनेच का करायचे? त्यात कालानुरूप बदल करता येणार नाही का? अशा अनेक प्रश्नांची उत्तरं आधीच्या पिढीकडे नाहीत. केवळ आमच्या पूर्वजांनी सांगितलं म्हणून ते खरं आहे आणि तसंच झालं पाहिजे असा त्यांचा हट्ट असतो. कोणत्याही विधीची संपूर्ण माहिती नसल्यानं याची समाधानकारक उत्तरं त्यांना देता येत नाहीत म्हणूनच नवीन पिढीला त्या गोष्टींचं मूळ समजत नाही आणि ते थोतांड किंवा अवडंबर वाटतं. गणपतीला लाल फूल का वहायचं? उपवास का करतात? अशा साध्या गोष्टींपासून माणसाच्या मृत्यूनंतर केले जाणारे विधी का करतात? इथपर्यंत कोणत्याही शंकेचं निरसन केलं जात नाही. आधीच्या पिढीने असे प्रश्न कोणाला विचारलेच नाहीत किंवा मोठ्यांच्या धाकामुळे त्यांना ते विचारता आले नाहीत. यामुळे निर्माण होणाऱ्या वैचारिक मतभेदांचं पर्यवसान हे या विधींवरच्या अविश्वासात होतं.       

भारतीय संस्कृतीत असणाऱ्या विधींना शास्त्रीय कारणं आहेत. त्यामागची तत्त्वं माहित नसल्याने काही शास्त्रीय विधी कायमचे नष्ट होतील की काय अशी भीती वाटते. या शास्त्रीय कारणांची माहिती नवीन पिढीला मिळाली तर आपली संस्कृती टिकून राहिलंच पण यामुळे येणाऱ्या पिढयांना त्याचा फायदाही होईल. नवीन पिढीची बदललेली जीवनशैली पाहता यातून काही सुवर्णमध्य काढता येईल का याचा विचार आता व्हायला हवा. या शास्त्रीय विधींसाठी लागणारं साहित्य आता उपलब्ध असेलच असं नाही. त्याला काही पर्याय शोधले जायला हवेत. शास्त्रीय माहितीच्या आधारे अशा सुधारणा करून आणि योग्य व्यक्तींचा सल्ला घेऊन जर असे विधी, उपाय किंवा दैनंदिन जीवनातील काही गोष्टी नवीन पद्धतीने करता आल्या तर दोन पिढ्यांमधला हा दुवा नक्कीच साधता येईल. अशाच काही विधींबद्दल आणि त्यात करता येण्यासारख्या बदलांबद्दल पुढील काही लेखांत माहिती देण्याचा प्रयत्न करेन.

Today's generation and earlier generation always have disputes on how tocelebrate festivals, perform rituals or astrological remedies. The earlier generation thinks that the new generation does not believe in our tradition and our cultural or spiritual heritage is in danger. The new generation either thinks this is ostentation or has no time to perform the rituals and feels that the earlier generation is too taxing. If both generations are made aware of the principles behind these rituals and their effects, these misunderstandings can be definitely cleared. 

If we try to learn how these misunderstandings were created, then we realize certain issues. In our society there is a mixture of cultures, rituals and family traditions. In the earlier generation there were very few people who were really ambitious. There were limited opportunities in education as well as earning sources. Females were not completely independent and had many restrictions. The family was the priority for females and education or earning were only allowed if possible. Men used to take basic education and went for a job. Due to lack of ambitions many of them were also not keen about higher education or career prospects etc. The joint family system and availability of time were the reasons why the earlier generation could perform the rituals as per protocols. The females were taking the responsibility of the preparations for the rituals we well as cooking. The new generation has observed this system when they were young. In spite of this, the rapid change in the lifestyle has made it difficult for the new generation to follow in the parent's footsteps. The earlier generation could not digest this change as they have strictly performed all the rituals. So they think the next generation is giving excuses which they feel are questionable. As the females in new generation started getting independent and educated they found no time for these rituals.Due to inflation, now the females have to earn to run the families. This started the conflict between the self-satisfied earlier generation and the aspiring new generation. To a certain extent today also females are expected to work from home. The older generation expects more from daughter in laws. This leads to estranged relationships and particularly females suffer a lot. In this dilemma the females are still supposed to take all the responsibilities and increasing number of nuclear families are adding to the pressure on them.

Well in all these practical issues there is a conceptual misunderstanding which is a very important factor. Due to practical difficulties the new generation has some questions like "What is the principle behind the protocols of these rituals?" or "Can we alter these protocols periodically?". Frankly speaking the earlier generation can not answer these questions. They stick to their thoughts just because it was told by the ancestors. The lack of satisfactory answers to these valid questions make the new generation think that this is a hoax or ostentation, which is absolutely unnecessary. Even simple questions like why Lord Ganesha has be offered a red flower or why we keep a fast are not answered. Many people are still not aware of the importance of rituals after the death of any person. Either the earlier generation did not ask these questions to anybody or they could not ask their elders due to fear. Whatever may be the reason, the result of this conceptual difference is disbelief of the new generation on our traditional rituals.

Indian tradition and the rituals are based on valid scientific principles. The unawareness of the information regarding the principles is really taking our new generation away from our culture.If we can educate this generation about the traditions we will not only save our culture but it will also help the future generations in various ways. We should seriously think about finding a golden mean. The authorities in this field should come forward and help to alter the rituals without affecting the principles. For example the materials prescribed in the rituals may not be available today. If substitutes for such materials are derived from proper interpretation of the texts it will be possible to perform the rituals by new protocols with maximum effect. This will also help to avoid the misunderstandings between the two generations. I will try to elaborate some of these rituals and possible alterations in my next articles.

ज्योतिष शास्त्राचा अतिरेक (Overuse of Astrology)

सध्या ज्योतिष शास्त्राचा वापर मोठ्या प्रमाणावर होताना दिसतो. एक ज्योतिषी म्हणून मात्र हा अतिरेक मला कुठेतरी खटकतो. कारण हा वापर शास्त्र म्हणून नाही तर एक खूळ किंवा फॅड म्हणून होतोय. वेगवेगळ्या माध्यमांमध्ये जाहिराती, तांत्रिक विधींचा भडीमार, अभिचार कर्मांच्याही जाहिराती, एका दिवसात कोणतीही अडचण दूर करण्याची जाहिरात अशा अनेक तद्दन दांभिक गोष्टींमुळे या शास्त्राचा मूळ उद्देशच हरवल्यासारखा वाटतोय.    

खरं तर ज्योतिष शास्त्र, वास्तूशास्त्र, सामुद्रिक शास्त्र, वैदिक आणि तांत्रिक शाखा आणि त्यासंबंधित विषयांवरचे प्राचीन ग्रंथ यांत या शास्त्रांचा उद्देश, विधी आणि खगोलशास्त्रीय घटना यावर भर दिला गेला आहे. पण मूळ ग्रंथांचं अर्धवट किंवा चुकीचं भाषांतर आणि लोकांची बदललेली मानसिकता यामुळे दांभिक लोक केवळ धंदा करण्यासाठी याचा वापर करत आहेत. ते खरेच ज्योतिषी किंवा तांत्रिक आहेत की नाही हा वादाचा मुद्दा आहे. पण खोटी आमिषं दाखवून पैसे उकळणे, तांत्रिक शाखेच्या नावाखाली अंधश्रद्धा पसरवणे अगदी स्त्रियांचं शोषण करण्यापर्यंत ही फसवणूक चालू आहे. या शास्त्रांची अपुरी माहिती आणि बदललेल्या जीवन शैलीतल्या अडचणी यामुळे अनेक लोक याला बळी पडत आहेत. 

ज्योतिष शास्त्र आणि संबंधित ग्रंथ लिहिले गेले तेव्हाची परिस्थिती आजच्या पेक्षा खूपच निराळी होती. पण काळानुसार ह्या ग्रंथांच्या भाषेत फारसे बदल झाले नाहीत आणि तेव्हाचा काळ आणि आजचा काळ यातला दुवाच साधला गेला नाही हे याचं मुख्य कारण आहे. त्यामुळे नवीन पिढी या ग्रंथांना थोतांड मानते. अगदी साधी उदाहरणं घ्यायची झाली तर हस्त सामुद्रिक शास्त्रावरील काही ग्रंथांत अजूनही तळहातावर एखादी खूण असेल तर मनुष्य राजा किंवा चक्रवर्ती सम्राट होतो असं भाष्य असतं. आता असं कोणतंही पद नसताना त्याची आजच्या काळाशी सांगड घातली गेली नाही तर ते भाष्य निरर्थक वाटतं. पूर्वीच्या काळी लोकसंख्या मर्यादित होती आणि प्राणी व वनस्पती मुबलक प्रमाणात होते. त्यामुळे अनेक वैदिक किंवा तांत्रिक विधी करणं सहज शक्य होतं. आता अफाट लोकसंख्या, वेळेची मर्यादा आणि नष्ट झालेले प्राणी व वनस्पती यामुळे हे विधी तंतोतंत करणं अशक्य आहे. त्यामुळे हे विधी ज्या पुस्तकांत आहेत ती पुस्तकं केवळ वाचना पुरतीच राहिली आहेत. काही ज्योतिषांनी काळानुसार भाषेत बदल करण्याचा प्रयत्न नक्कीच केला आहे पण अशा ज्योतिषांची संख्या कमी आहे. तसंच अनेक पुस्तकांत ज्योतिष शास्त्राचा मूळ उद्देश, त्यावरील भाष्य यापेक्षा लेखकाने पाहिलेल्या कुंडल्या हा एक स्वतःच्या जाहिरातीचा भाग जास्त असतो. अशी उदाहरणं जरूर द्यावीत पण प्रत्येक व्यक्तीची कुंडली किंवा हस्तरेखा एकाच तराजूत तोलणं शक्य नाही. याचा परीणाम म्हणजे अशा उदाहरणांतील प्रसिद्ध व्यक्तींच्या कुंडल्या किंवा हस्तरेखा यांच्याशी स्वतःची तुलना करण्याकडे वाचकांचा कल असतो. प्रत्येक व्यक्ती ज्योतिष विषयाची अभ्यासक नसते, सामान्य वाचकाला स्वतःचं भविष्य पाहण्यात जास्त रस असतो. ज्योतिष शास्त्रात अध्याहृत असलेले बारा ग्रह आणि कुंडलीतील बारा स्थानं धरून किती प्रकारे कुंडली मांडता येते हे उघड आहे. यामुळे वरवर पाहता अनेक कुंडल्या एकसारख्या दिसतात. अशा वेळी जुजबी माहिती वरून काही ठाम मत बनवून घेणं योग्य नसतं याची कल्पना लेखकांनी द्यायला हवी. 

आताची जीवनशैली स्पर्धात्मक असल्यानं लोकांचे दृष्टिकोनही खूप वेगळे आहेत. झटपट यश मिळवण्यासाठी वाट्टेल त्या थराला जाण्याची लोकांची तयारी असते. याचाच फायदा घेऊन अभिचार कर्मांच्या जाहिराती केल्या जातात. वशीकरण, मारण, विद्वेषण अशा कर्मांचा उल्लेख सामान्य भाषेत करून लोकांना मोहवलं जातं. कोणतेही विधी (अगदी अभिचार कर्मांचेही) इतके सोपे नसतात. त्यासाठी लागणारी तपश्चर्या, एकाग्रता आणि मुख्य म्हणजे कार्य सिद्ध करण्यासाठी लागणारे योग यावर ह्या कर्मांचे परीणाम अवलंबून असतात. अशा दांभिक जाहिराती आणि त्यासाठी स्वघोषित ज्योतिषी / तांत्रिक यांचा भपकेबाज पेहराव या सगळ्यामुळे सुज्ञ लोक ह्या शास्त्रापासून दूर राहतात. खऱ्या साधकाला अशा भपकेबाज वागण्याची गरज नसते. पण अशा प्रकारच्या मांडणीमुळे या शास्त्राची बदनामी होत आहे हे सत्य नाकारता येणार नाही. याचाच एक दुष्परिणाम म्हणजे काही कारण नसतानाही रत्नांचा, उपायांचा वापर केलाच पाहिजे असा काहींचा समज होतो. जन्मकुंडलीचं विवेचन ऐकल्यावर "मी कोणता खडा वापरू?" किंवा "नेहमी वापरता येईल असा काही तोडगा आहे का?" असे प्रश्न मला अनेकदा विचारले जातात. काही अडचण नसताना किंवा जिथे उपायांपेक्षा कष्टांची गरज आहे तिथे अशा जाहिरातींमुळे उपायांची मागणी केली जाते.      

ज्योतिष शास्त्राचं शिक्षण हा एक मुद्दाही विचारात घेण्यासारखाच आहे. खरं तर या शास्त्रात 'पदवी'पेक्षा अनुभव जास्त महत्त्वाचा ठरतो. अनेक कुंडल्या (आणि हस्तरेखा) अभ्यासल्यानंतर ज्योतिषाची स्वतःची अशी एक पद्धत किंवा शैली तयार होते. पुस्तकी ज्ञानापेक्षा अशा स्वतःच्या अनुभवामुळे आलेल्या ज्ञानावर खरा ज्योतिषी भाकीत सांगत असतो. कारण पुस्तकातले मुद्दे आयुष्यातल्या घटनांशी जसेच्या तसे जोडता येत नाहीत. यासाठी तर्क आणि अनुभव हाच मार्ग आहे. मात्र निवृत्तीनंतर वेळ घालवण्यासाठी किंवा लहान वयात 'छंद' म्हणून या शास्त्राचा 'अभ्यास' केला जातो. आज अनेक ठिकाणाहून यातल्या पदव्याही घेता येतात आणि त्या घेण्यात काहीच गैर नाही. पण या शास्त्राचा खरा अभ्यास केवळ पदवीवर थांबत नाही हे माझं स्पष्ट मत आहे. कुंडली बनवण्याचं गणित आणि विवेचन शिकल्यानंतरच खरा अभ्यास सुरु होतो, ज्यात अनेक कुंडल्यांचा अभ्यास करावा लागतो. हस्तरेखांचं शिक्षणही अनेक लोकांच्या हस्तरेखा पाहून करावं लागतं. यातली विविधता कागदावरची पदवी घेऊन शिकता येत नाही, त्यासाठी संशोधनात्मक अभ्यासाची गरज असते. पण ज्योतिष शास्त्रातील  गणितापेक्षा कुंडली विवेचन रंजक असल्यानं त्यावरच भर दिला जातो आणि कुंडली मांडण्याचं गणित टाळून कॉम्प्युटर वर कुंडली पहिली जाते. कॉम्प्युटरवर बनवलेली कुंडली आणि संपूर्ण गणित मांडून स्वतःच्या हाताने बनवलेली कुंडली यात अभ्यासाच्या दृष्टिकोनातून खूप फरक पडतो. आता काही महिने (फक्त कुंडली विवेचनाचं) शिक्षण घेऊन ज्योतिषी बनण्याचं प्रमाण वाढत चाललं आहे. तात्पुरतं शिक्षण घेऊन ज्योतिषी म्हणवून घेणाऱ्या काही व्यक्तींमुळेही ह्या शास्त्राचं गांभीर्य कमी होत चाललं आहे.  

एक ज्योतिषी आणि एक वाचक म्हणून ज्योतिष शास्त्राची आजची प्रतिमा सुधारण्यासाठी मी माझे हे विचार मांडले आहेत. यातून बोध घेऊन ह्या शास्त्राचा योग्य मान राखला जावा आणि चांगल्या दृष्टिकोनातून याचा वापर व्हावा हीच इच्छा आहे.

In recent years Astrology has been glamorized and overused beyond limits. As an astrologer I abhor this overuse because astrology has become a fad or a fashion rather than a science. Many kinds of advertisements in different media including Tantric remedies (even Abhichara Karmas), remedies to get rid of problems in 24 hours etc are deviating us from the basic goals of astrology. 

The original texts of Astrology, Vastushastra, Samudrik Shastra, Vedic and Tantra traditions emphasize on the principles, rituals, astronomical events and ultimate goals of these traditions. Sadly due to the incomplete or wrong translations of these original texts and changed mentality of the society, the pseudo masters of astrology or tantra are taking big advantages. Their knowledge in astrology or tantra is a controversial subject. By bluffing and plundering money, spreading superstitions or even by harassing women these pseudo masters are exploiting the needy people. Due to inadequate information about these traditions and problems in the changing lifestyle people are falling prey to these kind of advertisements. 

The ancient lifestyle when these texts were written was totally different from today's lifestyle. The language in many recent editions of these texts was not changed according to time, which missed the connection between the two periods. Due to unchanged ancient language in the translations of these texts, new generation has stamped these traditions as hoax. We can take a few simple examples of this. In many books of Hasta Samudrik Shastra (palmistry) there is a common interpretation which says "If a person has a specific mark on palm he will be a king or an emperor". Now this concept of becoming a king or emperor has to be related to the modern world or else it may sound meaningless. Secondly in ancient times it was possible to perform all the rituals as the population was limited and many plants and animals were present in abundance. Speaking for today's world it is not possible to perform the rituals as per protocol because many plants and animals are extinct, the society laws are also different. So these books are just read for entertainment and forgotten. Well, there are some astrologers who have tried to make changes in the translations of these texts  but they are very few in number. There are numerous books on astrology where the authors make their advertisement by writing the cases they have solved rather than writing on principles of astrology. I am not against giving the examples of such cases but every kundli can not be judged by a particular combination of planets. As a result, the readers compare their kundlis or lines on the palm with that of a celebrity. Everybody is not a student of astrology or palmistry so its obvious that most people are interested in knowing their own future. Astrology takes twelve planets into account and there are twelve houses in a kundli. So by considering all possible combinations a kundli can be written in limited ways. So apparently many kundlis look same or have same planet positions. In such cases it is the author's responsibility to inform the readers that jumping on to any conclusion on the basis of these examples is not advisable.  

Today's competitive lifestyle has changed the views of people in general. For quick success people are ready to go to any level. The pseudo Tantrics take advantage of this mentality and advertise their so called left handed tantric skils. They put advertisements of Vashikaran, Maran etc in fascinating or enchanting words promising the work to get done in a few days or hours. Ironically these protocols are not so simple to perform and take time to show the effect. The results of these rituals depend on many parameters. Due to these phoney advertisements and the garish apparel, discreet people keep a distance from all astrologers. Real masters of astrology or tantra won't need any such fancy advertisement. It can not be denied that this kind of gaudy presentation is one of the reasons of the downfall of this remarkable science. Another side effect of this is many people think that the use of a remedy or gemstone is a must. Even I have been asked many times "Should I use any gemstone?" or "Any remedy or mantra which can be used in general?" Even if there is no requirement of remedies or rather than a remedy practical efforts should be put to solve the issue, people still ask for remedies. This bombardment of various advertisements has adversely impacted peoples' minds. 

The qualification of an astrologer is another issue which needs to be reformed. I strongly feel that just getting an official degree on papers is not enough in this field. Experience of  the astrologers is what really matters. After studying numerous kundlis (or palm lines if a palmist) an astrologer develops his/her own style. Rather than theoretical knowledge an astrologer 'predicts' on the basis of practical experience. The reason behind this is the theoretical points in astrological texts can not be linked to an 'exact' situation of human life. This needs logic and a lot of experience with full dedication. People take astrology very lightly and 'study' it after retirement to pass the time or at a young age as a hobby. Now different universities offer degree courses in astrology as a subject and there is nothing wrong in getting official degree as an astrologer. My point is the actual 'study' of astrology can not stop after getting the degree. The actual 'study' starts after  theoretically learning the mathematics for calculating a kundli and its prediction. This 'study' means learning many kudlis of various people from different backgrounds. Similarly palmistry is studied by reading palms of many people from various backgrounds. This diversity can not be learnt by just getting a degree. A research oriented study is required to get mastery in this science. As prediction part in the study is more recreational than the mathematical part, more importance is given to it and the calculation is done using computer softwares. There is a major difference between a computerized kundli and a manually calculated kundli from study point of view and accuracy. Sadly by neglecting this view many students are just studying the prediction part on a computer generated kundli and becoming professional astrologers. This short term study of such a vast subject is also contributing in decreasing it's seriousness.     

As an astrologer and a reader I have put my thoughts here. I hope it will help to improve the reputation of Astrology. This phenomenal ancient tradition should be used respectfully for the welfare of all.
