(Guru)

      ==============================================

We many times hear somebody talking about their 'Guru'. Even as an astrologer, people seek help from me for getting a spiritual Guru. But what does the term 'Guru' exactly mean? Is it necessary to have a 'Guru' in life? What should be the role of the 'Guru' in our lives? and Who should be made a 'Guru'? Many such questions bother people in their day to day life. So here I am trying to explain the ideology behind the concept of a 'Guru'.

I will start with the definition of a 'Guru'. The word 'Guru' is a combination of two syllables in Sanskrit. 'gu'- Guhyat guhayatar satta i.e. formless, hidden and invisible power of God (darkness). 'ru'-tat rupam prakashayati iti i.e. visible luster and beauty of a living being. So the one who formlessly guides to cross the darkness and move towards light is the 'Guru'. Some scholars define it as 'gu' is darkness and 'ru' is destroyer. Thus the one who dispels the darkness and illuminates life is the 'Guru'. Guru Gita authored by Guru Vyasa, describes many definitions and connotations of 'Guru'. It is a conversation between Shiva and Parvati when Parvati asked Shiva to teach her about 'Guru' and liberation.

gu-kArascAndhakAro hi ru-kAras teja ucyate
ajJAna-grAsakaM brahma gurureva na saNshayaH

('gu' is the darkness of ignorance and 'ru' is light. No doubt 'Guru' is the brahman who swallows ignorance.)

gu-kAras ca guNAtIto rUpAtIto ru-kArakaH
guNa-rUpa-vihInatvAt gururity abhidhIyate

('gu' is beyond qualities, 'ru' is beyond forms. By the abandonment of qualities and forms, guru is thus defined.)
These definitions in reality are much unfathomable than they theoretically appear. There are more connotations to the term 'Guru'. Like, there are 50 types of breath. First 49 of them are 'ru' which are meant for materialistic enjoyments. And the 50th is 'gu' which is for extreme calmness. When we conquer the 50th breath, we reach Nirvikalp Samadhi and attain the salvation. We even overpower 'Guru' at this stage. The word 'Guru' has such a vast meaning. The 'Guru' who has conquered the 50 breaths and is a God realized soul, which is merged with the Universal Consciousness is called a 'Satguru'. Not every 'Guru' can get a title of 'Satguru'.

We should choose a 'Guru' by rationally thinking which person or power (deity) can fit into the above mentioned definitions. It is not necessary that a 'Guru' should be a human incarnation or avatar. Any power which can guide us apropos of the requirements can be a 'Guru'. At different critical junctures of our life we meet various people who guide us and we genuinely call them 'Guru'. For example school teachers who guide us at school level or there are 'Guru's in the art of dance etc. Even a young person guides us at some stage can be considered as a 'Guru' at that moment. We also  respect our parents and other elderly people as sort of 'Guru's. But there is a huge difference in considering these people as 'Guru' and getting blessed by a real 'Guru'. Now lets understand this difference in detail. When a master is accepted as a 'Guru' then it is a permanent step. Though I am extremely proud of our Indian culture, accepting a person as a 'Guru' just on the basis of seniority is something I do not agree upon. For example our parents are always our well wishers and guide us from time to time. At many such points in life we respect them as 'Guru's. Well we should logically think that can we accept them as permanent 'Guru'? Nobody can assure that elderly people will guide us perfectly every time or they will not commit mistakes. I strongly oppose this superfluity in our culture. Though many people praise a person by sharing their experiences, or that person's spiritual knowledge or a Siddhi attained by the person, we should always check whether that person is really capable of becoming a 'Guru' or not. Age, spiritual experience or Siddhi are absolutely irrelevant criteria to become a 'Guru'. A capable 'Sadhak' may not become a capable 'Guru'. Sadly our culture has been misinterpreted and became ostentatious, which has to be corrected.

A 'Guru' has no boundaries of age, gender, education etc. To guide a disciple is one of the prime duties of the the 'Guru'. So we should examine beforehand whether the 'Guru' is really illuminating a disciple's life or not? While accepting a person as a 'Guru' or after acceptance mostly people blindly follow the orders. Today many fraudulent 'Guru's are exposed. This happens merely because of the blind faith of the disciples and following the orders irrationally. Secret meetings with women, demanding money, ordering to chant 'Guru's name, selling self made products or showing paranormal powers are not the signs of a real 'Guru' The Ashrama system as in ancient times is also not existing now. So we all should think logically before encouraging such things. I do not object chanting any deity's name or a 'Guru's' name per se. There is no short cut for efforts. So even after putting all efforts, if somebody is facing some hurdles then one can definitely go for remedies like chanting mantras. But we should keep in mind that only chanting mantras will not help to get desired results.

People always ask whether it is necessary to have a 'Guru' in life? I will straight forwardly answer it as NO- it is not necessary to have a 'Guru' in life. Or it will not make your life incomplete. We all make our future by our own deeds and the Karmas. There can be a 'Guru' who will point out the mistakes and help us to get on the right track. On the flip side, there are many people who guide us at various moments and are our 'Guru's at that point. Any permanent 'Guru' can not magically change our destiny. So we should not think that absence of a 'Guru' in life is making our life incomplete. We always come across some 'Guru' for a temporary period of time. If we keep our eyes open, there are many people who guide us and show us the right path. Just the thing is we should recognize their form and acknowledge their support. Talking about the spiritual progress, even some knowledgeable people guide us on this path too. Well our spiritual progress is in our hands, isn't it?

I strongly recommend that even if one gets a real 'Guru' in life one should not get carried away. A devotion should not cross the limits. As devotion does not mean blindly following somebody, but it is an appreciation of the efficacy and assimilation of the same. One more important point here is, if one makes a person or a power or deity a 'Guru' then it should be enduring. Changing the 'Guru' and inconsistency in faith by reading some texts or falling prey to other people's criticism is absolutely incorrect. I have seen some people who are not consistent with their concept of 'Guru' and change their 'Guru' after reading new texts. When we accept somebody as our 'Guru' we should not compare the capabilities of the him/her with those of another one. Every form of power is gifted with a special forte. So being inconsistent due to own materialistic and spiritual  demands is absolutely not justified. So we should be fully aware of the concept of 'Guru' before taking any decision regarding this matter.

Many people are muddled about the selection of a 'Guru'. Becoming a 'Guru' has no parameters like attaining Siddhi, inheritance, age, education etc. It may not be a human being but can be a power, a deity (like Shiva or Ganesha). Only knowledge will not make a master a 'Guru', but he/she should be well versed at using the knowledge in proper sense and illuminating a disciples' life. Only those will qualify to be at a position of a 'Guru' who do their duties without any expectations and getting puffed up with conceit. A 'Guru' who will suggest a worship (only if needed) and give practical solutions, should be accepted. For example if any worship is recommended by the 'Guru', it should not be forced on the disciple, rather the disciple should understand and follow it with full heart. Along with this the 'Guru' should also take into account that whether any worship is required or any practical change is needed for the wellness of the disciple to fulfill his materialistic needs. While reading about these religious masters we often come across the information that these masters used to live or wander naked. The secret behind this lies in the definition of nakedness or 'Nagna' in Sanskrit. It derived from the Sanskrit root 'na'= No 'gna=attached; i.e. Nagna (Naked) is the one who is detached from everything (it has various definitions, but I have given the metaphorical meaning here). So the one who is detached from any kind of lust (emotion) is a proper 'Guru'. This doesn't mean the 'Guru' should be naked in practical sense but he should be emotionally empty. 'Guru' should be free from Shadripu or six enemies (viz; desire, anger, greed, pride, fascination and jealousy), wishing to give and able to give. It can be a child or an aged person or a deity. I opine that we should accept such a power as 'Guru' where we can worship with free will, without getting carried away or forced. We live our destined life depending on our karmas. During our progress if we luckily meet a real 'Guru', it will definitely help to enlighten our life. Nonetheless if we are not blessed by a 'Guru', it will not change out destiny.

Ideally a 'Guru' has a room to evaluate and accept or reject a disciple. At the same time questioning and evaluating a guru and then surrendering to him is perfectly acceptable in Hinduism with a broad view. Of course this two way thinking is probably not digested by many followers. Nevertheless I think loyalty should be cross checked for both the sides. After accepting the disciple the 'Guru' takes the first step i.e. Diksha. Diksha literally means initiation. It is derived from Sanskrit root 'da' means to give and 'ksa' means to destroy. Combining these roots the word 'Diksa' means to consecrate has developed. It means a 'Guru' dispels adyana or ignorance by providing dnyana or knowledge. It can also be derived by another definition. 'di' is intellect and 'ksa' is the horizon or the end. When the disciple is initiated by a 'Guru' their mind unite kust like earth surface and the sky line meets at horizon. The mind of 'Guru' (sky) meets with the mind of the disciple (Earth) to transcend and the journey becomes of the heart. This way Diksha will help the disciple to start a new life on a new path by dispelling all darkness and move towards light. By evaluating the capability and needs of the disciple, 'Guru' decides which Diksha out of the 64 Dikshas viz; sparsha diksha (touch), mano diksha (mind), swapna diksha (dream), chakshu diksha (eyes), shambhavi diksha etc. is to be given. 'Guru' and 'Satguru' bless the disciples with different kinds of Dikshas. As 'Guru' initiates the guidance while 'Satguru' takes the responsibility of the disciple to major extent. According to some texts 'Satguru'  transmits a small portion of his vital energy (Prana) into the disciple and absorbs the accumulated karmas of the disciple to reduce the suffering. This is how a relation of 'Guru' and disciple starts and helps the later to start the quest with full vim. One has to be very fortunate to get blessed by a 'Satguru', which is not as easy as it seems.

I tried to explain the concept of 'Guru' in this article. Now a days many so called 'Guru's are exposed and followers fall prey to the trickery. Also there are many misconceptions which lead to the confusion regarding the conceptualization of 'Guru'. Lastly I would like to mention that it may be 'Guru' or a well wisher, guide, idol or an astrologer we should not follow anybody blindly and should take any decision with logical thinking.

Note: 'Guru' is a part of everybody's belief. I have vividly expressed my opinions here. Every reader may not agree to it. This article is not intended to hurt anybody's feelings.

(Vedanga and Astrology)

     ==============================================

Jyotish is one of the auxiliary disciplines which are connected to the study of Vedas, which are known as Vedangas. I will try and explain about Vedangas in this article. Lets start with understanding the basic concept of Vedas before jumping on to Vedangas. 'Veda' is a Sanskrit word derived from the root 'vid'; which means to know or knowledge. In Southern part of India Vedas are customarily called as 'Marai' in Tamil language. 'Marai' means hidden, mystery or secret. But commonly the term 'Veda' is officially used for these texts. The knowledge in the Vedas was transferred from one generation to the next. Using the then available mediums in ancient times this knowledge was handed over to the next generation. So the term 'Sruti'  was used to denote
the Vedas. This literally means 'what is heard' or the knowledge transferred through the aural perception. Some analysts say that the word 'Veda' is derived from the verses which are transferred through verbal medium, though the meaning is close, this derivation has no grammatical undergird. I request the readers to not get confused between 'Sruti' and 'Smruti'. 'Smruti' is the knowledge transferred by remembering. But 'Smruti' are not part of Veda scriptures.

A total of four Vedas exist. Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samveda and Atharvaveda. Each Veda is is subclassified in four text types.

1) Samhita: This deals with the mantras and benedictions.
2) Aranyaka: This deals with text on rituals, ceremonies, sacrifices and symbolic sacrifices.
3) Brahamana: This deals with comments on rituals and sacrifices.
4) Upanishada: This deals with philosophy and spiritual knowledge.

To understand the Vedas and to transfer this heritage to the next generation, it was imperative to understand and assimilate various things like Vedic language, pronunciation, mantras and their rituals, rules and regulations, diet, deities and their worshiping etc. To come to the grips with these, some auxiliary disciplines were included, which are known as Vedangas. Though the origin of Vedangas is not accurately traceable, but it is believed that they were conceptualized near the end of the Vedic era. As near the end of Vedic era, the language of Vedic texts became archaic for the people at that time. The intensive study of Vedas and their proper interpretation started becoming tougher, without any ancillary system. As a result of this, this auxiliary system emerged to help and transfer the knowledge in the Vedas without affecting their connotation and structural framework. Now lets know briefly about the Vedangas.

Total six Vedangas were developed.

1) Shiksha: The Sanskrit word 'Shiksha' literally means instructions, learning or studying a skill. In context of the study of the Vedas, it means an auxiliary limb to learn phonetics, phonology and pronunciation or accents of Vedic mantras or written text and mastering them. Vedas are written in (now) archaic Sanskrit but this can't stop future generations to study them. The accent, melody of it and the body part used in the pronunciation makes a huge difference. For instance, while pronouncing Sanskrit alphabet F (फ)lips should be locked and then opened a bit along with exhaling the air fast from the lungs to make it a proper accent. Otherwise it's pronunciation will be incomplete and any mantra including this alphabet will not be properly pronounced. 'Namo ऽ' ('नमो ऽ') should have a long pronunciation after 'mo' before uttering the next alphabet. Shiksha discipline teaches how and when to use different organs like tongue, palate, jaws, lungs abdomen etc. while pronunciation. If these rules are not followed then it may change the whole meaning of the word. If proper sound is not generated then the mantras will not work. These all basics can be learned with the help of this  Vedanga.

Om! We will explain the Shiksha । Sounds and accentuation, Quantity (of vowels) and the expression (of consonants)। Balancing (Saman) and connection (of sounds), So much about the study of Shiksha॥ (Taittiriya Upanishada)

2) Chanda: All of us have heard the word 'Chanda' while learning the grammar. In simple words Chanda is the meter of a poem (Sanskrit Prosody). Chanda literally means alluring, pleasant or beautiful. It derived from the root 'chad' which means to please, something that nourishes or is celebrated.  The hymns in the Vedas are written in specific meters, to enhance their melody. Proper pronunciation of the hymns needs a study of those meters i.e. Chandas. A particular verse is composed in a Chanda or Vritta. The consonants and vowels are related to pronunciation and phonetics is related to the Chanda. Some times the names of the used Chandas are written at the end of the hymn like: 'Anushtubh Chandah'. Chandasutra (Sanskrit Prosody) explains this in detail. The most popularly used Pingala Sutra discusses a binary system to calculate Vedic meters. In this a triangle called 'Matrameru' which counts the sequences such as 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 in their prosody study to create pleasing sounds and perfect combinations. The major Chandas (meters) in Sanskrit Prosody include Gayatri, Ushnih, Brihati, Anushtubh, Pankti, Trishtubh and Jagati in which the hymns of Vedas were composed. In post Vedic lterature few meters were added or changed. This study of meters can be learned with the help of the Chanda Vedanga.

 With the Gayatri, he measures a song; with the song – a chant; with the Tristubh – a recited stanza;
With the stanza of two feet and four feet – a hymn; with the syllable they measure the seven voices. (Rigveda)

3) Vyakarana: Grammar is the integral part of any language. Without the rules in grammar no language will have a discipline. A linguistic framework needs a proper arrangement of different forms of words, sentence making, tense, signs etc. Panini and Yaska are two celebrated scholars of Vedic Vyakarana. Panini's Ashtadhyayi is the most studied Vyakarana text, which includes almost 4000 verses. Panini in his Ashtadhyayi shed a light on many grammatical rules like how to form a sentence, arrangement of words etc. He introduced the grammatical rules to create and sustain the melody of the Sanskrit language. This ancillary science is important for linguistic analysis, polishing the language and expressing the exact meaning of the words.

4) Nirukta: Nirukta literally means explained or interpreted. This Vedanga covers etymology and proper interpretation of the Vedic verses. It includes the glossary and the detailed information like interpretation of archaic words and their derivation. Yaska who was mentioned in the previous point, is supposed to be the scholar who created Nirukta. According to Yaska "Don't memorize, seek the meaning. What has been taken [from the teacher's mouth] but not understood, is uttered by mere [memory] recitation, it never flares up, like dry firewood without fire. Many a one, [although] seeing, do not see Speech, many a one, [although] hearing, do not hear Her, and many a one, She spreads out [Her] body, like a wife desiring her husband.
The meaning of Speech, is its fruit and flower."  (Nirukta). Not only the grammatical rules but using an appropriate word at appropriate place is an art. This can be learned in the Nirukta Vedanga.

5) Kalpa: Kalpa literally means proper or fit, in the context of Vedic studies it means ritual instructions. The rituals in the Vedas are vast and need to be performed with a specific systematic procedure. Kalpa Sutra covers these Karma kanda, rite to passage rituals, principles behind them and their exact procedures. For examples the 16 sanskaras or rituals associated with major life events are covered in Kalpa Sutra. Sruti and Smruti both have their separate Kalpa Sutras.

6) Jyotish: Before commenting on this Vedanga lets understand the meaning of Jyotish. In Sanskrit 'Jyoti' is light. But many words in Sanskrit mean different types of light. But 'Jyoti'  is the light or radiance as the source of life. The suffix 'sa' makes Jyotisa as cerebral 'sh' due to the vowel 'i' at the end, and it is pronounced as 'Jyotish'. Jyotish means 'that which pertains to the light, or that which pertains to the radiance of the stars and planets. The plural of 'Jyoti' also means the light of the stars and the planets which are lights in the sky. So first of all I want to say that Vedic Jyotish is a science which primarily predicts the movements of the celestial bodies (today's Astronomy). Concomitantly it covers kundli making, prediction and remedies too. But it was not limited to just the prediction part based on the kundli calculation as in today's world.

Lagadh is supposed to be the scholar who wrote Vedanga Jyotish. Vedanga Jyotish primarily focused on the celestial movements to keep time. This was the most primitive form of (today's) Astronomy. Like today's portrayed image, the objective of Vedanga Jyotish was not merely to calculate kundlis and predict future. This ancillary science had many mathematical calculations (Kalavidhan Shastra) to work on calculations of Yuga, Years, Months, Days, Tithis, calendars, Sunrise and Sunset, consequences of celestial movements, Sundials, Water clocks, Sand clocks etc. Though today's astrologers have forgotten these vast calculations, this ancillary science providing such prodigious knowledge is definitely commendable. Today we use various gadgets but in ancient era all the study was derived using naturally available sources. We should keep in mind that all the new era gadgets we are using are based on the principles derived in ancient era.

As an astrologer I have actually written this article precisely for this Vedanga. My whole purpose of this article is to make people aware of the fact that Jyotish Shastra is not only a tool for seeking future but it is a vast science to study calculation of celestial movements and understanding nature's cycle. In Vedic era, this ancillary science was used for various purposes like Muhurta calculation, helping people and politicians by predicting celestial movements, suggest best time for Vedic rituals and mainly to keep time.

I am not claiming that this vast study was only accomplished on Indian continent. Various countries have developed their own studies by their methodologies. But in Vedic era, when no other then existing country had such remarkable knowledge, Veda Shastra used this science is definitely a matter of pride. Now many Astronomers and scholars refer to different theories from other countries. Taking it for granted that Jyotish is a myth or pretense, they do not even bother to explore the core of this vast science. But Vedanga Jyotish is a Shastra which has a scientific base. The mathematical accuracy of it makes us speechless even today. Thus if scholars have a prejudiced view and are not ready to understand the concepts behind this science, I feel they have no right to blame this science for being a myth or pretense. If we compare today's astronomical calculations to Vedic calculations we come to know how accurate the later one is. Thus I do not agree to the theory that says Vedanga Jyotish is a mere superstition. If readers and analysts study this Shastra carefully it will not only help to remove these misconceptions but will also help to improve the knowledge and get the answers of some previously unanswered questions. Jyotish is a prodigious science. I have composed this lengthy article in an attempt to reduce the misunderstandings and give this science a proper respect which it deserves. I feel even scientists should use valid criteria and rethink about the Jyotish Shastra as a science.

(Baby's birth time and kundli calculation)

Many times an astrologer or a querent is biased about the exact birth time taken into account. Mostly people note the birth time which is provided by the doctors at the time of delivery and the same is recorded as birth time for various purposes including calculation of the kundli. As a matter of fact we do not exactly know which time has been recorded by the doctors or nurses. This biased noting or unknowingly misconstrued act can completely change the kundli calculation. Many times we experience that the comments by the astrologer are totally discrepant or contradictory to the real life events. I think that mostly this occurs due to the misjudged birth time. Now I will try to explain this in detail.

First of all the querents should keep in mind that if any astrologer looks at the kundli then he/she will know about the past, present and future of the querent is a big misunderstanding. Probably the astrologer can describe a particular event veraciously. But a complete picture of life can be visualized by the astrologer is really a far fetched perception. Most querents approach the astrologer by taking this perception for granted as make statements like "you must have realized from the kundli" Astrology is a science not meant for unveiling personal lives but it is intended to give proper guidelines whenever needed. After accepting this fact, it will be practicable to understand the following points.

If precise birth time is provided then only a perfectly detailed kundli can be calculated. Many times this recorded birth time is biased and also there are differences of opinions on this subject. If both sides of the coin are considered then we can know why predictions go wrong due to wrong birth time. First problem is the querent is not aware of the exact birth time or depends on the time recorded by the doctors, which can be wrong. On the flip side an astrologer, if knowledgeable and willing can make rectification of birth time but if he is working just for money purpose usually this point is neglected. A slicker will mostly avoid such discussion or will not have a broad mind to accept the mistake. Any astrologer should take into account the boundaries of astrology before promising an accurate prediction to the querent.

Now I will try to elaborate on what should be the exact birth time of the baby and why, along with the disputes between the scholars regarding this.

Some scholars believe that when the baby's heart starts beating for the first time in the womb, should be taken as the birth time. Well, when the unborn baby is still in the womb it doesn't have its own body mechanisms running. Breathing, digestion or waste product removal is done with the help of placenta. Waste product is delivered to the mother's system with the help of placenta and umbilical cord. Baby's lungs are in a collapsed state. Oxygen is received through umbilical cord.  Baby's heart at this stage is only using two chambers for circulation, which changes immediately after birth. The unborn baby in the mother's womb has no existence as such. So I don't agree with taking first heart beat as the birth time. Even in practice not many people accept this theory.

Some scholars state that the sighting of the head (or leg) for the first time from outer side of vaginal canal is the birth time. It is also known as 'crowning'. Some times a part of baby's body slightly comes out of the womb. E.g. Leg, head etc may come out and immediately go inside the womb due to the stretching or compressing of the vaginal nerves. But just a sighting of the organs before delivery can't be taken as a birth time. As such sighting and actual separation from the womb may have a difference of as long as ten minutes. Also this sighting of baby's organs is not a specific or rhythmic process.

Some scholars opine that when the baby takes it's first breath after the birth should be taken as the birth time. Well I disagree with this calculation too. First of all nobody can ensure that the baby will take a breath immediately after birth. Sometimes this breathing has to be induced. This may take some time. Also, the first cry of the baby is misunderstood as it's first breath and provided wrongly as the birth time. In cases of water birth, the baby is given some time like a minute or so to open eyes, use senses and move about. Before breathing in air the baby may be under water for at least a minute. By taking into account all these factors, I feel that the first breath can't be taken as birth time. Along with these factors, baby's inhalation of air is hard to hear but the exhalation can be clear. This it has no perfection. A cry and breathing may have some time difference too. That is why I refuse to accept the theory of first breath to be taken as birth time.

As a microbiologist and an astrologer, I will now put the most acceptable theory of birth time. According to astrology the birth time is that moment when the independent body (Lagna) comes into existence as a separate entity. When umbilical cord is cut, the baby loses all it's physical contact with the mother and a separate body starts working with it's own system. This moment when the umbilical cord is cut should be taken as exact birth time. Now after awareness most of the doctors also provide this timing as the birth time. The reasons behind accepting this theory are, after the cutting of umbilical cord the baby can breath independently (which may not start immediately), mother's system is unable to help physically and lungs and four chambers of heart need to be independent to start functioning, which requirement is fulfilled. The time required to start these systems may differ, but their platform is provided by the separation. Another important but unfortunate event can occur due to complication. A baby may not breath for a long time and die or die in the womb itself. If cutting of umbilical cord is taken as the birth time, this forlorn event can be studied. So, I feel cutting the umbilical cord should be the time of birth.

In today's world precise time showing clocks are available. But in older times how people were calculating exact birth time may be a question in many peoples' minds. I will briefly answer this question. In ancient times sand clocks or may different clocks were available which had no hands or numbers. At that time one day was considered as the time between sunrise and sunset. I will give some metrics based on which this period of today's 24 hours was divided very minutely. It may be the umbilical cutting time or any other step during child birth, the accuracy of the system is astonishing.

Time units in ancient times:

We call blink of an eye as 'nimish'. This time span is so small that it can't be measured easily. But one nimish is 0.2112 seconds. The time units started with such minute details. The smallest unit is Paramanu. One paramanu is 60,750th part of a second. Starting with this small unit the system was developed and practiced. I will provide some ancient time units and in context with today's units.
Lipta: 0.4 seconds, Kshan: 1 second, Kashth: 8 seconds, Vighati (pal): 24 seconds, Laghu: 2 minutes, Ghatika: 24 minutes, Muhurt: 48 minutes, Ahoratr: 1 day. Using this time unit system the kundli was calculated by converting the birth time into ghati and pal.

Well, I tried to put my thoughts on what should be the birth time, which will not only help to minimize the errors but will also help to predict accurately from the kundli.

(Shayars - Astrological Analysis)

       ==============================================

As I mentioned in my previous article I studied kundlis of Shayars. Every shayar got the share of weal and woe in life. But rather than lamenting the losses everyone of them tried to give happiness to others. As Mirza Ghalib said, one who has no experience of sorrows can not be a good shayar. Because if there is no grief, how can one express it through the poetry?

I will briefly explain important parameters in astrology first. As I mentioned in some of my previous articles Venus, Neptune, Moon and fifth and tenth houses are important for any artist. Nevertheless a precise prediction will vary according to one's kundli. Along with this other planets do affect the kundli and the person is versed in subjects other than one's own interest. Lets see some examples to understand this.

Shayar E Azam Mirza Ghalib has auspicious Moon and Venus, which gave him a taste of poetry and he was extraordinarily talented in this. After his father's demise at the age of 6 he grew up with his uncle. Sadly his uncle also expired soon. At the tender age of 14 Ghalib got married. But he had a very tumultuous marriage. His life was full of ups and downs. Some crisis situations in life, estranged relations with wife and witnessing death of all his 7 children were a few of distressing turns of fortune for him. He described his life as confinement and marriage as second imprisonment. He thought that all his sufferings will end with himself. On such a miserable life he wrote:

(The prison of life and the bondage of sorrow are one and the same,
Why should man be free of sorrow before dying?)
This is one of the best shers he has penned.

Well, I observed through my studies that even such a great, creative shayar could't escape the sorrows. He thought that he could compose best ghazals due to all peaks and troughs in his life. Such comment on life needs a very brave heart, which indeed he had. Due to the Rahu in the seventh house of his horoscope he had a tumultuous married life. Fifth house is a house for art. So fifth house lord Jupiter in the fifth house was very auspicious. Moon also in his fifth house was supportive to it and gave him an imagination power which has no comparison even today. Same Jupiter in the fifth house which is also the house of children, proved to be malefic. (Jupiter destroys the house where it is placed- reference needed). Also Saturn aspecting this house made it more negative and Ghalib couldn't enjoy his fatherhood. He witnessed death of all his children. What more can anybody face in life? Due to Uranus in the tenth house and Venus in the fourth he received great honor at higher levels. He was not only honored in India but on global level too. He was also well versed in philosophy and logistic. Jupiter in the fifth house in it's own sign gave him these best fruits.

I could not get the kundli of great Pakistani shayara Parveen Shakir. But her Moon sign is Aquarius according to her birth date. Even though she was estranged from her husband, she studied in banking and languages and acquired a PhD degree. She also had higher education in English. Due to her marital problems her ghazals were full of beauty, romanticism, separation, sorrows etc. She was a very prominent shayara in that era. But at the age of just 42 she died in a tragic car accident.

Mommin Khan Momin was a doctor in Unani medicine. He also separated fro his first wife. Then he remarried. But he died at the age of 52. I couldn't get his birth details.

Daagh Dehelvi has his Moon situated in Libra and Venus at a very good position in Gemini. Due to these auspicious planets he could not only become a scholar in the art of poetry but also he was well trained in horse riding and calligraphy. Sadly most part of his life was not happy. His father was executed by hanging. His mother then remarried to a Mughal crown prince. This was the best period of his life. But after the death of his step father his condition declined. Conjunction of Jupiter and Ketu in his horoscope proved to be a malefic combination forcing him to face the ebb and flow of life. Still he is one of the topmost shayars with a style of delicacy and romanticism.

Though Zeb Un Nissa was a princess, I can not say her life was smooth going. According to historians she had many suitors, secret lovers and palace trysts. None of the relationship was successful though. May be due to her secret affairs or her liking in poetry, her precisian father Emperor Aurangzeb held her prisoner for the rest of her life. Though she never married, her ghazals and other poetry on love are par excellence. Her accumulated wealth was confiscated, her annual pension was nullified and most importantly she lost her freedom. After 20 long years in imprisonment suddenly she died. A symbol of women empowerment this uncrowned Empress of Mughal era, lived a miserable life at the end.

It is impossible to write about the details of all the kundlis of shayars I studied. But I can expand and write about my astrological views on these kundlis as a group. Like any artist a shayar's kundli should have a scope for imagination, which is of utmost importance. So Moon is the important planet which is either auspicious or situated at most benefic position. Lord of art i.e. Venus is mostly situated in conjunction with Moon or at least aspecting Moon. Venus, though in such good position almost failed in every kundli to give marital happiness. The lay out of the planets was such that sorrow became the inspiration for ghazal writing. Fifth house in the kundli is the house of art. So these two planets were directly or indirectly related to this house. Most of the shayars worked in the Mughal courts, which became their place of work. So the tenth house and Sun were also related by some or the other means as Sun gives honor in government or politics. In shayars of new era this kind of combination was rare. Rather they have their tenth house related to Venus and Moon. Seldom Neptune was observed to be related to their art. Most of the shayars are well versed in many fields other than poetry. So the fifth house, which is also the house of education was very auspicious and mostly related to Jupiter. Nonetheless no auspicious house or planet provided fully benefic results. Another important result in these kundlis was a medium or short life span. This yog is present in many artists' kundlis in general. Untimely or accidental death, imprisonment are some of the results which can be observed in the kundlis of even today's artists. In spite of being an Emperor himself even Bahadur Shah Zafar could not avoid imprisonment. Though he was long lived, his life was a emotional roller coaster. Now the point to be considered is fame. Most of the shayars who enjoyed exuberant fame had Sun, Jupiter, Second and tenth house lords in very auspicious positions. This gave them honor at the Emperor's court or in today's world titles from the Government. This should not be confused with their accumulated wealth through honors. Because either some of them could not get enough wealth with their titles or even if they got it was somehow lost or confiscated. In spite of all these hurdles, these old shayars were absolutely loyal to their art. Sadly this loyalty observed in the earlier times was diminishing with time and has almost missing today. So the difference between old shayars and new shayars profoundly exists. The earlier shayars used to write ghazals following all complicated rules. They mostly abhorred writing in free verse style. By chance if they wrote free verses they didn't call it a ghazal. The new era shayars just like new generation of poets write in any style and have an obstinacy to call it a ghazal (new era ghazal). I know I am not any authority in ghazal writing but frankly speaking I do not like to forcefully fit free verses in a established style of poetry just for the sake of name or fame. All readers may not agree with me. But it is a sad fact that the original beauty of the ghazal is definitely vanishing. In today's world a selfless, loyal shayar is very hard to find. That is why I studied and wrote very briefly about the kundlis of only those shayars who were loyal to their art.

If I have hurt anybody's feelings I will definitely apologize for that. I only wrote about the 'real' shayars according to me. It was not possible to mention the names of all the shayars, so I could write about a few of them. I just want to add that even if I have missed some names I do remember them as best shayars.

(Shayars' Personalities)

An Anthology of Urdu Poetry

       =============================================

Ghazal is a poetic expression which is well known in India. There were many exquisite Ghazal writers in Hindustan even from before partition, which already lead to the popularity of this form of poetry. Practically speaking Ghazal writing came to existence much earlier like before 7th century. It bloomed in southern Asia in almost 12th century. Before the birth of Islam in Arab countries they used to write 'Qasida' a then well known poetic form. Thematically Qasidas were panegyric for a ruler, lampoons and moral maxims. It was mostly a panegyric poem to praise an emperor or iconic figure at that time. When Qasida's opening prelude was nostalgic or romantic it was known as 'Nasib'. When this stylish and highly ornamental Nasib transformed to shorter poems and standalone mode, it was known as a Ghazal.

With time Ghazal has changed in many different forms and became very popular. Near the end of 6th century in the period of Umayyad Caliphate, Ghazal took it's own shape. In short Ghazal is a poetry of a few Sher(s). A Sher is made up of two lines. Then the Ghazal should follow rules like Matlaa, Radif, Beher, Qaafiyaa and Maqtaa. These rules take care of the rhyme, shers and their meaning, theme, ending and pen name of the shayar etc. For example Beher is the meter of the poem. Though this kind of  poetry seems very difficult due to the rules, it's connotation, beautiful similes, ardent and epic imaginations made it highly popular. Ghazal is an Arabic word which has a very soft pronunciation using tongue and soft palate. The literal meaning of Ghazal is a sweet talk to display amorous gestures. The concept of Ghazal mainly includes nostalgic emotions like separation, broken love, leaving behind thoughts of love with the help of liquor etc. Nonetheless there were changes in the themes in future, but in my opinion these new themes or similes are lacking the sweetness of the original theme of Ghazal.

A slender antelope is known as Gazelle in English. That is why many people think that meaning of Ghazal is near to Gazelle, which is not the case. In between I read somewhere that in 1973 a Pakistani shayar Ahmed Ali mentioned this point in his well known book 'An Anthology of Urdu Poetry'. He said the meaning of Ghazal has it's root in the opening verses of Qasida i.e. 'Taghazzul'. According to him, when a Gazelle is wounded and cornered by predators it comes to know how lonely and vulnerable it is. An appalling and agonized cry of that Gazelle can describe the depth of the Ghazal. So Ghazal is a very deep form of poetry. Superficial emotions or shallow ideas have no place in Ghazal writing whatsoever.

Sadly in Maharashtra, Ghazal writing or even listening is very much limited. This knowledge is restricted to some famous shayars and their verses used in films. Some connoisseurs do attend programmes like Ghazal singing or listening and discussions. Apart from these and some people related to this industry, most of the young generation is satisfied with the common 'emotional' verses found on internet or blogs. But original Ghazal is full of depth, emotions, words and colours. Sufi, Persian and Turkmen even Indian legends like Amir Khusrow have composed fabulous Qawwalis in 'Hindavi' language. Such readers are diminishing now. Many Ghazals by Shayar-E-Azam Mirza Ghalib are well known. On the contrary, apart from his Ghazals a treasure like his letters, Nazms and Ghazals different from his famous ones are available.
Along with Ghalib, Sheikh Ibrahim Zauq, the last Mughal emperor Badshah Bahadur Shah Zafar, Daagh Dehelvi, Meer, Momin Khan Momin, Khwaja Meer 'Dard', Nazeer Akbarabadi, recent shayars and poet of humour like Akbar Allahabadi, shayara Parveen Shakir, Ahmed Faraz etc. have a great contribution in Ghazal writing.

Zauq started his journey as a shayar just before Mirza Ghalib, in fact they were competitors. Both had a different style of writing but Ghalib's vocabulary and skill in simile had no comparison whatsoever. But this doesn't mean that Zauq was any less.

While reading about these legendary shayars an interesting thing came up. Most of these shayars were not only the masters of shayari but they were versatile personalities too. Mirza Ghalib was not only a scholar of Urdu but was also versed in many languages, philosophy and logic. Momin was a very good doctor, so he was well known as Hakim Khan. Along with medicine he had a vast knowledge of mathematics, astrology, music, geomancy and chess. Bahadur Shah Zafar was an emperor himself.

Zeb-un-Nissa, the daughter of a precisian emperor Aurangzeb, was a scholar in various fields. Along with Sufi poetry and Ghazal writing, she wrote many books of poetry.  A symbol of beauty and brains, princess Zeb-un-Nissa was born with high intellect and was not only a master in Quran, Persian, Urdu and Arabic languages but was also one of the best female singers at that time. She was a highly accomplished scholar with a vast knowledge in astronomy, philosophy, mathematics, calligraphy and literature. Daag Dehelvi was a scholar in calligraphy and horse riding. Legendary Amir Khusrow was a mystic and a highly spiritual person.

I think a person should have a good general knowledge and information in various fields to produce the best of his/her writing. This is the reason why the writers or poets who are well versed in various fields write using their broad views. There are in fact good writers or poets with one sided study. But a widespread or ubiquitous study will definitely reflect in the writing.

Being an astrologer I tried to study these artists from astrological point of view. I will write about my observations in my next article.
